This is the biggest week of 2022 Epson Tour calendar.  Instead of $30,000, the winner will take home $50,000:

French Lick Charity Classic

French Lick, Indiana     Aug 4-7

  • Format: 72 holes
  • Purse: $335,000
  • Par: 71
  • History: This is the first year for this event.
  • Yardage: 6,431
Xiaowen Yin could potentially challenge Lucy Li for money title if she wins this week after her first win last week.

I still see or hear French Lick and I cannot help but think of Cheers, Woody, and Larry Bird.  🤣    I wonder if Sam Malone and the group ever beat Gary's Bar?   🙂

In 7th grade we had a teacher who claimed he was from Floyds Knobs, IN. We thought he was pulling our leg, but we grabbed an atlas and while we were searching for this "fictitious" town we stumbled across French Lick. Pre-teen boys, Floyds Knobs, and French Lick made for a very potent combination. Hilarity ensued.

Is this week's Epson Tour event = at the same French Lick Indiana resort

i.e. the Pete Dye -designed course that's regularly featured on the "Fairways of Life show" hosted by Matt Adams?

..Edit: Looks like there's 2 courses at French Lick ... i.e. the Donald Ross course preceded the Pete Dye course?

Yeah, the Ross course preceded the Dye course by decades. Both are very nice. The Dye course sits on the highest point in Indiana, and on a clear day one can see several states. The Dye course has hosted the senior women a couple of times I believe.

Dang, US Women's Am got gutted because of the AIG.  Well I guess 0nly 5 of the players are in the AIG, but the loss of depth (19 of top 25) really takes away from the event.

We saw this coming, and Augusta National Golf Club is the villain.

US Women's Amateur used to be the Top Dog, the Number Uno; but no more after Augusta National Women's Armature Championship was launched in 2019.  I don't see any Top women's amateurs skipping ANWA Golf.

World No. 1 Rose Zhang among notables skipping U.S. Women's Amateur | Golf Channel

As you said though, it's not really because of the AIG.

The Augusta National Golf Club has nothing to do with how many girls are playing the U S Am.

How do you like to be Xiaowen Yin?  She got 4.0 on one win and 6.0 for the next; two Epson Tour wins and she's #246 in the world.

It bugged me with Brooke back in 2015 when she had like a handful of Epson (Symetra at the time) starts, it was a 1st, 2nd and 3rd something like that, that was 10 points or less total ........ those 3 events bothered me for years lol

But for good players this isn't a bother and only slows entry into the top 10 but more often top 5.  Also with the top 10 you should have wins if you're there IMO.   Hye Jin is close if she get's the win she'll get close to top 10, she's was 8th in the race to the CME and just dropped to 12th but 24th in the Rolex rankings.   Xiaowen Yin will fly over the minimum divisor next LPGA season but in the 200's she'll climb quick with good results but like Hye Jin Choi she's need the similar good results and a victory to crack it.

I'm also betting she'll probably get a sponsor exemption or two before the end of the LPGA season.

So I was looking at the rolex rankings and noticed something different to me.  First winning a Major and finishing 2nd in one in 3 months will only get you 10th spot in the rolex rankings, tough crowd at the LPGA. lol  Also, the Asian players play so many events, Japanese and Korean.  Looking at Hye Jin Choi she has 8 top 10 this season but not being a normal rookie will hurt her.  She has 62 events counted towards her divisor and mostly lower value KLPGA points, it will take another season to wash it from her record.  Take Jeeno she has a win is more the normal rookie type, she used the minimum divisor most of the year (35) so during that she could never lose points but now she's at 37  and climbing every event she plays, so now bad finishes start to show up.  Patty and Yuka did this, both had minimum divisor most of their 1st season after major wins and were securely in the top 10 but once the divisor went past 35 and they weren't getting the results they fell out of the top 10 like rocks, Jeeno does seem to be matching good results with her win so she looks like she'll hold the top 10 better.

Just looking at all KLPGA and JLPGA regs or rookies who play so many events, I guess it's sorta counter-intuitive outside the top 10 plays as much as you can to maximize your points but inside top 10 the sweet spot seems to be play 40-50 depending on the player.

I know Brooke has really cut down her play at the start she was easy 30 events a season.  She seems to be taking the Lydia approach of not playing more than 3 events in row.  Something reconfirmed by Lydia and Brooke  in stories I read both felt the went a bit too far with 4 in a row from the US Open to the KPMG.  Both played well all the events but started out good at the KPMG and then both hit a wall on the weekend.

Yes the KLPGA + JLPGA play more events and the rankings are measured by the strength of the field, so they can be quite inflated a bit. Jeeno is a good outlier due to having less # of starts and she shouldn't lose too much ground once the starts even out a bit, most of those points came from doing well in majors and 2nd at Honda LPGA as a non member. Hye Jins last year on the KLPGA was a bit dissapointing compared to her POTY wins as a teenager so Jeeno basically has a year head start on her.

Yewon Lee and Ina Yoon, both rookies,  are ranked 71+72 respectively despite having 20 less starts under their belt to their KLPGA counterparts so I expect them to skyrocket based on this system.

Kinda lucky this isn't an Olympic year, teams are picked based on the rankings.

Jin Young

Hyo Joo

Ingee

Sei young

Inbee

Min Ji Park

All are ahead of Hye Jin on the rolex ranking and I'm pretty sure you'd want Hye Jin on your Olympic team lol

I'm not a fan of the ranking system at all , seems to rest too much on the laurels of past success. Wish it were more like the tennis.

I've always liked giving a bonus to winners on all tours like 25 points on the LPGA maybe 15 on KLPGA and JLPGA and like 10 on the LET and Epson and you keep it for 2 yrs.  Simply winning on any tour is tough, I think it should be better rewarded

I guess they will be skipping the CP Women's Open then.   That's one heck of a trip to get to Ottawa

The tournament is scheduled to end on Saturday, August 20.  As you know, the Asian time zone is 12 hours ahead of Eastern Canadian time.

Those LPGA players are special guests invited to play by the tournament sponsor; I'm sure their travel itineraries are well taken cared.

As of now, Lydia, So Yeon and Yealimi are scheduled to play Ottawa.

Welcome back @Supermilo!

I've no idea your Asian Trip was going to last 3-4 months; but all is good now you're back in the fold!

🤣... it was fun watching Hinako contend (eg Open) and Ayaka win (eg Scotland) while in Kabukicho/Shinjuku

(and not fun as my account seemed to have been hacked as well!  thankfully no posts it seems - if someone was rooting against my favs using my handle, it wasn't me LOL!)...

just in time for the CP Open (and getting through jetlag!) though as you said, Hinako will be in Indonesia.    BP still awaiting visa approval to play in CP, sadly...
