Rickie's swing

Recommended Posts

Watching the 2017 US Open final round. Fowler's swing in '17 compared to now had so much more early set. I can remember a key that butch had Fowler do was set early. Butch said Fowler was a handle dragger and it caused issues in his swing. Look at fowler swing now....much later set. I wonder why he went away from his 2017 swing.

Rickie said with tillery he is trying to think more about his body, rather than his mechanics. The set is super weird, he takes his hands and club so far outside at the start of the swing, then quickly pulls the club back with his wrists, then has no option put to drop it extremely on the inside. I think he really needs to start getting the club behind him as soon as possible. As akward as his takeaway is, I still think Rickie has one of the most beautiful swings out there.

If Fowler really wants to get better, he needs to roll in a few more putts. If you look at his putting stats from the PGA championship….🤢🤢🤢

Rickie's swing is most definitely better now than it used to be. His issues now are more related to putting and that little pocket between the ears.

Fowler sg stats:

Tee to green

- 2017 13th (+1.134)

-2022 75th (+.297)

Putting

- 2017 1st (+.852)

-2022 163 (-.260)

He's worse all around. Tee to green stats strongly indicate that his swing is not better now than it was in 2017.

I believe that tee to green stat drop-off falls in the "between the ears" problem. He's still positive strokes gained on tour. The swing is there.

No way for any of use to know for sure. I see a swing that is very different and stats that shoe a drop off. I have a hard time believing a guy of his stature dropping off mentally. He may not care as much.

Who knows. His swing is different though.

Maybe Rickie can get back with Butch. The brilliance of Butch is he doesn't change what got them there other than a tweak here or there.

Butch was on a SkySports Golf telecast a while back, one of the players they were following was DJ. Butch told a story about DJ coming up to him saying he couldn't hit a fairway and wanted Butch to look at his swing.

Butch watched DJ hit a few balls and told him he needed a little more flex in his right knee. DJ hit about 15 straight balls in a row and thanked Butch for helping him.

Butch was in the booth laughing, he said nothing changed changed in Dustin's knee flex.

It often isn't a major mental change. Something small can have big impacts. Rickie's rounds are mostly solid, then he has a hole or two where he struggles. Sometimes he collapses after that, sometimes he picks himself up. It's all speculation, but I like his swing now.

I really liked his Butch swing, earlier set, more vertical. I honestly thought he was about to turn over a rock in terms of consistency and more wins, then butch stopped teaching and he seems to have fallen back to his old pattern.

People can talk about his putting (which is bad for sure), his mental, his hot wife, his commercials, but I have said all along it's his swing. He can fire off a bunch of birdies and then throw in a double or triple with a foul ball, he just needs to be a hair off for it to come into play. I was hoping the butch swing would reduce the foul balls, but now he is somewhere in between, where he still has the foul balls but the birdies in bunches are now missing.

With both swing he was really laid off at the top. With the butch swing, at least he was more vertical. That helped protect from getting stuck under. Now he's more around, flatter, and laid off....

Could it be that the fields are even better now than they were in 2017 so it’s hard to get strokes gained on the field?

Stats that show a drop off need to be taken in context….and I’m much too lazy to do look it up.   Is his tee to green play worse…or “just” worse as relation to his peers.  Not really saying it matters a lot just wondering how much his game has dropped off.  I would wager it’s the putting that has dragged his game down.  Nothing worse than hitting good shots and not getting rewarded by missing putts.  Then the long game starts to press…which never helps.

Yikes, that putting though.   How does that happen?  It just seems like, vs. a full swing where he's obviously been making big changes, etc., it doesn't make sense to me how his putting could crater like that.  I would hope there was no conscious effort to change what he had been doing.
