24 hours to hit a hole in one from 125 yards - $10 million if you do, but 1 year in jail if you don't...

Jail no, something else, depends.

125 is kind of a tweener yardage for me, so I'd have to see how the pin is set up and the greens.  My new golf course has soft greens and last weekend I hit a U wedge on a 125 yard (downhill, water everywhere) and hit it 1ft behind the hold and it spun back exactly 10" and was 2" away, if I played on a course with slightly faster greens it probably would have gone in.  So depending on what I'd lose (not doing jail no matter what) it would be dependent on the conditions.  Totally still, firmish/fastish greens, pin in a bowl, maybe you got my interest.

TBD - G430 Max 15* - 818 H2 19*- Sub 70 Pro 23* - i525 6-U - SM9 54* / 58* / 62*  - F22

This thread has survived almost a year with fresh answers coming in periodically.

We have a very unscientific 25% to 75% rate of YES to NO.  For every 1 of us who are crazy enough to want to try this, 3 are passing hard.  And the in-betweeners are getting creative with their responses such as "first I would change to identifying as a woman" and "if jail, yes, but if prison, no"

I can't make that swing for 24 straight hours. No way! I'd be dead after about 300 balls.

This would be an issue for many of us who may not want to admit it

I'm young. I have plenty of life left, so i'll take my chances. Give me a 50 degree wedge and maybe a 48 and i'll go to town

It can make sense taking more chances when you are young, but you also have more chances to build wealth slowly

I don't have a lot, but I also don't need a lot. I would rather work 20 more years than lose 1 year of my prime 🙂

Both of you are living right!

I like your analysis framework @MtlJeff, but do you really think there is much more marginal utility/happiness in $100 M vs $10 M

On 9/16/2022 at 8:41 AM, MtlJeff said:

Zero chance i'd do it. Odds of a hole in one are 12500 to 1 or so. I am far , far , far better than most of you jabronis. However even if you say 7500 to 1 --That's still a shot every what, 11 seconds?

A year in prison regardless of what it's for is a criminal record, so i'd lose my job. I'd far rather have my job that i do, than a coin flip essentially for 10M or basically working custome service the rest of my life.

It's really not even a discussion.

Honestly to consider it , it'd probably have to be 100M+

I think it would be interesting to see how much things would change if this were a simulator challenge.

I think basically anybody could do it if they got to hit off a perfectly flat surface, off a forgiving mat, in an air-conditioned environment where the simulated weather and putting surface were perfectly controlled.

Given 24 hours, you probably wouldn't even have to be a great iron player to get it done. Probably any avid golfer could get it done in 500-1,000 whacks with lots of intermittent breaks.

Heck, what if it were amended to 24-hrs of total simulator time? That would be even easier, being able to spend 2-hrs a day for 12 days for example.

Only if they amended the prison time to be on a certain island off the coast of San Francisco, solitary confinement.

Judging by how I was hitting at the range yesterday, I'd say yes.

Judging by how I was hitting at the range today, I'd definitely say no....... 😄

Id do it on the basis that:

1) I think in 24 hours id pull it off anyway

2) The chance to win 10 million dollars is a worthwhile gamble for the trade off of 1 year in jail

3) Even if i didnt pull it off, its only one year in jail. I didnt murder someone. I didnt commit armed robbery. I didnt commit fraud. Its not like my reputation has been tarnished forever and im unemployable

4) If i won the 10 million which i think i would, work can kiss my little butt forever

Ah, but in the world of golf and among golf buddies that reputation will be forever tarnished.  And you will be the laughing stock of all.

Then again, if you won the $10 million you'd be held in awe.

This would be rather tempting, as I have a variety of shots that can be played at that distance...

  • With a tailwind, I can hit a full back-middle of the stance / flighted 55*
  • In normal wind, I can hit a full, middle of stance 50* or a flighted 50* from a little farther back in the stance
  • Into a headwind, I can play anything from a flighted 45* PW to a 9 iron, depending on what's in front of the green (or behind it for that matter for those fly it long and spin it back shots).

Given this lets me take a variety of full swings and then hit a few with less power that are flighted. I can normally hit about 200 balls in a range session without much effort, and that's gotten better as I've gotten in better shape the last year or so.  I have a grumpy elbow, but hitting 10 or 200 shots doesn't really matter and it doesn't really affect anything until the next day when I sit down at a PC and bump the elbow on the desk.

I guess if I was hitting to a green with a back to front slope, a landing area in front of the green, and had a couple of weeks to practice before the challenge, I'd probably take the risk...as long as the "prison" time wasn't listed as an official arrest or conviction and was more of a confinement / loss of privileges thing than an actual hardcore prison.  So yeah, LOTS of things to consider, but it's worth a shot probably because I'd be retiring as soon as I burned a lot of personal leave / vacation (at least 10 years early too) if I made it...and my wife could retire too if she wanted.

Id take that bet.

I feel like actual odds more like 2000/2500 to 1. Exact same flip wedge over and over again…I’m making that at some point and as long as someone is there to remove other balls from the green, I don’t think it would take me 24 hours.

hopefully you get it within the first few hours cause after that the blisters, soreness, and general fatigue will be an issue

The actor Tom Holland and his two brothers did a 500-shot challenge to try to make a hole in one on a 132 yard hole.  It looked like the mental drain was worse for them, though they each only had to hit a third of the shots.
