Ping G430 irons – 2022 Shriners Children's Open

Recommended Posts

At least the responses here when Ping releases a new G series iron are consistent. Time, after time, after time, after time . So much so I could write all the posts by myself.

Their fugly

Hope they feel better

Hope they sound better

Hate the lofts on the toe

Hydropearl finish looks like crap after one range session

Ugh, too much offset

Too strong lofted

I could go on but I'm just too lazy.😅

sad to see how strong those lofts are, but on the flip side, what do we call the “new” wedge??

So I mean, its basically all the clubs are 1 club strong via the lofts.  So if you order 5-W, order 6-45.5*.

Doesn't that mean your clubs will be 1/2" short or did they jack the lengths also.

Good point, not sure there, interesting approach they're taking with the G430 stuff for sure.

Also head weights question involved. Generally these heads are light in weight

I also believe this is where Ping uses max weight toe screw & hosel weight to achieve max MOI regardless of your shaft/grip/length build.

  • 3 weeks later...

I went to my local golf store to check out the G425 irons

I figured with the G430 coming out I might be able to get a deal on the G425

After hitting 3 shot with them I put them away

I am not usually turned off by a sound of a club, but these were really bad

Sounded clicky and hollow

Not solid at all

I play the G400 and they sound and feel solid

I was looking to upgrade next year from the G400

I can only hope the G430 sound and feel better

Otherwise it is off to Mizuno

Tbh of all the manufacturers, I really didn’t expect ping to submit to the loft jacking battle like this. A 41* pitching wedge, a 45, and a 50? Straight up embarrassing. A 45 is strong loft for a pw in its own right!

lmao I thought the 45 was the PW until I saw this comment! As I was scrolling through the pics I was like "wow 45* that's actually a respectable PW.."

A big issue with the predecessor and competitors is the massive loft difference between consecutive clubs in the set.  Multiple 5 degree gaps and some manufacturers even have gaps of 6 or more degrees.

Strip the stampings on the club face away, and the lofts ranging from 25.5 degrees to 50 degrees are actually more in line with the i230 than the g425.  For g430, Ping doesn't have a gap of more than 4.5 degrees and nothing less than 3.5 degrees in the highlighted range.

This is actually a refreshing take on "loft jacking" and one that helps the player dial in their approach distances.  It's true, there would be differences in club length but this is something players can sort out with their fitter or based on prior specifications.  I'm of the view that having the W, 45.5 and 50 degree wedges at the same length of 35.5" could also helpful for consistency.

The issue though is shaft lengths.  If they Jack the length too it’s not an issue. You just play a 5i instead of the old 4i. But for us slower swingers, whey they Jack a 7i to 26* but keep the length at 37” it gets too hard to launch the ball effectively.  If you get it built 1/2” longer it makes the swing weight too heavy.

Ping claims to be introducing a High Launch build with the G430 family to address helping slower club swingers generate more speed to improve launch conditions.

Saw that. But 35-45g are way too light for me in irons.  I’m trying 65-75g lately and they borderline feel too light.
