Just Invested in Next Year's Ball

Recommended Posts

I've been on a "playing a single ball" kick for the past two years. Whether it results in a practical difference on the scorecard is debatable, but I do like the brainless consistency of having a stockpile of golf balls and never having to think about it.

Year one I went with Srixon Q-Star Tours.

Year two I went with Srixon Z-Star XV

This year, I'm going with 2019 Z-Stars. Got them for $32.50/dz. at Rock Bottom.

The XV's were just a bit too hard, I must admit. I don't think I saw any appreciable distance gains for the trade-off. So, hoping that at the price, the Z-Stars will be a bit more to my squishy preferences.

Apparently @Chip Duffer is the only one who cares - but that's cool.

In case y'all are interested - $32.50 for 2+ orders at Rock Bottom.

Having played the most recent iteration of the Z-Star XV, I think these earlier year models might be the better overall ball - regardless of standard vs. XV.

While preference is a ProV1x, I will use any number of balls.  Balls I have liked and used off and on are: TM TP5, ProV1, K-Sig (this years 3 pc ball is pretty decent) and Srixon's.  If the game matters I'm going to use the ProV1x.  FWIW, I have never been one to stockpile balls.  I'll buy a couple of doz. ProV1x's and the rest I will find along the way.

Have you looked at the Maxfli tours? 4 dozen for just over $100. I've played the Srixon and the Maxfli, and they are very similar, just a lot cheaper.

Yeah, I haven't played the current (or recently current) Maxfli offerings - but I know that they have a good reputation. With the specs and a urethane cover, I'm sure they are a great ball.

You've got an extra dozen for the price of my Z-Stars, obviously. Solid deal!

surprisingly, i haven't used a Srixon ball... guess i've been too lazy to research which would actually work best for me

(un)fortunately, i still have 10-12 dozen original K-Sigs sitting in my closet and my wife would probably have my head if i ordered some more

I also have been on a "play a single ball" kick for a several years

First it was the Bridgestone RX (got too expensive)

Then the Z-Stars (2 for 3 deal)

Then Snell Black (best ball for the money)

Now it's the Wilson Triad

I really liked the Z-Stars but hated the seam issue

The Wilson Triad is my new favorite ball

They hold up well, fly far , and spin great into greens

I would recommend that Triad, but they are not as cheap as the Z-Stars

To each his own

Good luck

I wish I could narrow it down to one ball but right now I'm bouncing between two types most brands X version mainly Chrome Soft X, Srixon Diamond, Bridgestone Tour B or I'm into the low spin category Z-Star XV, Chrome Soft XLS.

For me I usually scoop up the previous gen in bulk on sale and stock up on the Srixon BOGO. Plan to buy like 6 dozen of the Diamond this year.

Big believer in "play one ball all the time" and my choice is Pro V1x.

I had a "backup" or "spare" set of irons that I hadn't touched in 8-10 months, along with various other fairways, hybrids, wedges and a putter that had been in a closet for quite a while. So I batched them all up and sent them to Global Golf for several hundred dollars of trade-in credit, which I used to buy ten dozen Pro V1x balls.

I've got enough to last me well into 2023 although probably not much past the end of the summer. I play 3-4 times a week so I go through close to a dozen balls a month. I'll worry about how to afford more once these 10 dozen run out. Maybe after the first of the year I can pick up a couple dozen of this years model a little cheaper once the 2023 version comes out.

I'm gaming the Triad and I'm a huge fan, too! I think what impresses me the most with these is how well they roll on putts. They just hold the line you put them on.

Balls came in today. As I feared, they are the current model year - rather than the 2019's I ordered. I'm not sure how I feel about the current iteration of Srixon covers, but we will see how they do.

As far as balls in general are concerned, I'm happy playing anything with a urethane cover from the "higher spin" model of whatever manufacturers' "tour level" or "near tour level" designs.

I can happily play a Pro-V, Tour B, Z-Star, TP5, etc, etc, etc.

How did I decide to stick with Srixon? It's completely arbitrary.

1. I'm a Cleveland homer from way back. Srixon bought Cleveland.

2. Japan makes some good golf stuff.

3. They are cheaper relative to the competition.

4. No one else plays them.

Hence, I play Srixon.

If you find one with a giant red blob on it, right above the "X" in Srixon, it's probably mine.

I'm super budget conscious - and golf balls are no exception. $50/dozen makes my ears bleed.

But, I've also tried all the budget options.

Refurbs suck.

Used often suck.

Playing whatever you find on the course is cool, but balls perform differently. Consistency is helpful.

Wilson Staff 50 Elites (or equivalent) are pretty good - but Ionomer cover...

Maxfli etc. with urethane cover are pretty good. Can't complain.

But, no one (and I mean no one) plays Srixon in my local area. Good quality. Good price.

Blam, Srixon it is.

Right on. I'm a believer in the "one ball theory." I do think it helps - in some infitesimal way - to better scores.

I try to practice and play with the same ball. With short game it's easily implemented. Long game is a different matter.

Couldn't agree more

I love the ProV1 golf ball but wherever I play them they seem to be water seeking missiles or impossible to find them

My home course is lined with trees, so they go missing quite often

Then I am pisssed I lost a $4 golf ball

Snell to me is the best ball for the buck IMO

Around $37 a dozen when ordering 2 dozen

when you can order 5 dozen, its about $32 a dozen of course it depends on where you live for shipping cost

No one in my area plays the Snell ball either

I do like the Srixon ball and the  2 for 3 deal is a winner

If you are really want a deal the Oncor Elixr are $50 for 2 dozen

They are pretty good balls and a Urethane cover

If that matters to you

Good luck
