Max Homa swing

Was listening to some of the talking golf heads today and they were talking about Max owning his swing, and how he couldn’t swing the way his coaches wanted him to at first and had to change. I didn’t put this in Tour Talk, because it’s not really about his win, but rather I’m wondering from the golf swing experts here, what? If anything, can the average am player take away from Max’s swing?

Love Max's action. When I think of the archetype for the modern big muscle swing, Homa comes to mind. Doesn't appear to have a lot of compensations and looks simple. What he actually feels and works on, I have no idea. It would be interesting to hear Mark Blackburn's teaching philosophy.

Very vanilla neutral swing. He doesn't do anything odd or crazy, so there isn't a lot to talk about like a Dj or Morikawa or Sergio. What is more boring than his than his swing is his course strategy and expectation management. He is the anti-thesis to the average golfwrx bomber. Swings 120+ but isn't playing a TS4 8* turned down to 6, instead he hits that weak slice  10* TSR3 that is losing distance to a draw? He has a 7w in the bag that the average wrx player would send to the moon and a GI 4i that a Jones Scott wouldn't be able to work both ways. If he had a bladed 3i he could have slung a draw into 18 for eagle instead of wussing out hitting that point and shoot 7w to the back of the green

 

Of all the tour players to mimic, it is definitely NOT Max Homa.

Apparently Tiger doesn’t know anything and Max Homa sucks because no one who knew anything would tell someone to cast form the top.

interesting, I don’t see the cast, but I’m the farthest thing from an expert…

That’s because ulnar deviating (casting) the center of mass in the correct  direction when the body and arms are sequenced is not a cast like what a golfer who ulnar deviates in the wrong direction with poor sequencing.

He's exceedingly neutral and doesn't really seem to do much that is extreme. I personally love his tempo, smooth as butter but still powerful action. Also was struggling with my set up and have used his address position to try and emulate with some success.

The talking heads were saying that his swing is unconventional and that he swings “around his body”…I was like, huh?

honestly this is the review I was hoping to hear. I’ve seen so many players hit the 7w better than his shot at 18

If it wasn't for Sam Ryder taking a crap, he would have been in real trouble. Sam Ryder wins the tournament if he was wearing normal pants, no doubt in my mind

Yall know I been hyping Max on here for a long time.

 

Totally love dude's swing - it's tidy, compact and there's nothing crazy about it that could go off the rails. One of those swings that makes it LOOK so easy.

What do the talking heads, I think it was Frank Nobilo, mean by, his swing is different in that he swings around his body? I'm just trying to understand, or is it basically nonsense just to fill air time?

Well he surely can't say "This is a prototypical vanilla tour swing, if you want to mimic a good swing, this is it". He'd get boo'd off the air by the guys who "cant swing like tour players" since they are too old, too short, unflexible, unathletic, etc. The clear answer is to mimic Rahm's short swing instead.

I like Frank, I like Azinger, I like Faldo, I liked Miller when he was announcing.  They do an excellent job of play by play, as they have been there.  The issue is when they discuss golf swings, they spout the same misconceptions that ams do on the driving range.

 

Azinger once said balls below the feet would go left because the heel catches and closes the face. Faldo said Scheffler’s physics didn’t match with his foot move.  

 

Frank is better than most in this case as he educates himself more.

 

I give them all a pass because they were great players and not siwng nerds, but I would hope they would learn more and would benefit from a guy like Chris Como, or Dana doing that kind of analysis.

 

I hear former players in other sports make mistakes on coaching analysis all the time.  
 

The one I can’t forgive was Kostis, that was supposed to be his field of expertise and he spouted more tripe than any of the players.
