Thanks for asking.  My mom finally heard from her Kahului sister that the Lahaina sister is okay.  One of the neighbors was evacuating and picked her up.  Unfortunately, they've confirmed that the house and entire neighborhood are gone.  She didn't have time to grab anything so all she has is the clothes she was wearing and her purse.  She's over with the Kahului sister right now.

 

We know other people who live in the older "camp" homes a couple blocks away and their neighborhood is gone as well.  All that's left of the homes in my aunt's neighborhood are the cinderblock foundations.  As far as we know, their cousins who live in Kula were not affected by the upcountry fires.

 

My mom goes to Maui every November to her Kihei timeshare and it's my brother's turn to go with her this year.  She's already said she's prepared to shed a lot of tears when she sees the devastation to her hometown.

That is so sad. The whole thing is so sad. That beautiful little seaside town with such great Hawaiian architecture and charm. People's homes and lifelong treasures... just devastating.

So terrible, man. Glad, at least, your family made it out. Been seeing news notification about the death toll. 

 

With the CA fires - while none ever got near me while I was living in LA, there was always the comfort in knowing I'd have plenty of places to go to get the f outta Dodge if I had to. Can't imagine how terrifying it must be to be stuck on a little rock in the middle of the ocean.

In happier news; I'm ready to get back out to actually playing. Thanks to my awesome PT, my shoulder's all straightened out and been to the lil Aliante range a couple times this week - like today! - to work out any mechanics that went funky during the lil break while on the road.

 

 

By end of day, that range is pretty chewed up but I actually kinda dig it - cuz it pretty much requires ball-first contact. Worked drills through 4, 5 and 6 irons today - pretty damn solid strikes. 

 

My only REAL complaint with that range is the balls. It doesn't look like they've been replaced in 20 years. It's a damn miracle to find one that has dimples and isn't missing a chunk. So impossible to really gauge any distances with any accuracy. 

 

But it's 5mins from the house so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yep.  You know it.  One side of this coin is ok All day. Flip the coin , and the ban hammer is waiting.  No doubt.  And I’m not talking about nasty comments or any disparaging remarks for any group of people. It’s a no go zone in my opinion.  I wanted to say at first I was mad I missed the subject. It's mostly Mormons that roll around here. Vegas is a VERY Mormon town and I see 'em rolling around on their bicycles all over.

I think the weather gurus screwed our course today. I played in the League. Normally we recirculate the carts for the afternoon wave. Yesterday the staff asked if we would take them to the drop off area. They were calling for massive storms starting at Noon. I know the pro shop and the bag drop said there were Zero tee times booked. Now it was hot and humid heat index for us was 117. We did not get one drop of rain period not just us but the whole grand Strand area of SC. I know I soaked down 5 gloves 2 wristbands and 3 towels. Geez Louise those Tour Wrap grips slipped 4 times on me despite me drying them off. I swore off Tour Wrap grips after yesterday. I got lucky a friend of mine who messes with equipment had some Crossline Cords he had bought on a deal. We do a lot of business with each other. I got them for $8 each. I spent yesterday afternoon in my shop changing all my grips. Which with me using air to put on and off took less than an hour to do. Back in the day I always used Crown Cords which they do not make any more. I was on the sign in sheet for today but I like most scratched out of the list. May ride over in the AM and see if there maybe is a spot available. And BTW the Broomhandle worked good for me never missed a putt inside of 5 feet and got the lag down pretty decent

One of my cousins shared someone's drone footage from over Lahaina taken yesterday.  It was centered more on the area above the Pioneer Mill smokestack as opposed to Lahaina Town/Front St.  I grabbed a screenshot of the street where my aunty lives.  Again, that house was their family home after they moved from the old Pioneer Mill camp.  I can't bring myself to share it with my mom.  The area of destruction is worse than I thought.  It stopped just short of the Lahaina Bypass for those who are familiar with the area.

All the participants in the Member-Guest arrived yesterday. We got them checked in and onto the course for their practice rounds. Today the competition begins. I will be rather busy for the next two days. I'm filled with adrenaline and I am not even competing. 😃 This is an exciting tournament to be a part of. Here's hoping this old boy's feet can carry him the distance.

IMK, I am so sorry to hear about your family has been affected by this tragedy.  These fires seem to be getting so intense and so hot so fast with the lower moisture levels and higher temps.  I don't think I have ever heard of a fire season like this one.  It seems like every state but TX has been impacted by fire and/or smoke.  I hope everyone is able to rebuild what they can.  Of course, the loss of memories and mementos is soul crushing, but insurance if you think about it is just buying money.  I hope they have good insurance and aren't stuck in the fight like heck vortex so many cheap carriers put people through.

 

Here is a beer story.  My grandfather was no longer allowed to drive, I was 19 and each month he would buy a case of Schaeffer from the local beer distributor.  He was out and he asked if I would go get it.  I told him I was only 19 and I couldn't buy beer, and he says to just try it.  I hadn't told him I had a fake ID, so I get in the car, drive down to the distributor (it was huge, more like a warehouse) and look around.  The guy finally asks, "Can I help you find something?"  "Yes sir, I am looking for the Schaeffer beer.  I need to buy some."  "We have one case in the store and it's not for you."  I explain who I am, why I am there, and he runs into the back, gives me the case.  Doesn't card me or anything, just hands me the case and says I will send him a bill.

 

To write this down, it isn't a great story, but this is what is missing today in the internet age.  This huge beer distributor in PA had 25,000 feet of warehouse stacked with cases and cases of beer, yet the owner never lost track of even the smallest of customers.  True, my grandfather had been buying his case of beer for 40 years like clockwork, but where are those people now?  I don't think that type of retailer exists anymore.

Great story, P3P! And so true as far as personal service goes. It got me to thinking of where that kind of service still exists. The only places I can think of are where there’s actual interaction with the people delivering the service: wait staff at restaurants, barbers, doctors, etc. We have a couple of restaurants that we frequent and try to get the same waiters because they know us. I’ve gotten to know the starter at one of the local munis that I play a lot and, while I haven’t had to rely on him for anything out of the ordinary, I can tell he’s the kind of guy who would go the extra mile. Sounds like @touch has strong relationships with several of his members. Frequent turnover makes those situations less likely to last, though.

 

But retail? You’re lucky if you can get a response that’s not auto-generated.

... I did two things I have never done playing my solo round yesterday. Since there was nobody on the course and by nobody I literally mean zero people, I engaged in the very base essence of muni golf. Since my arms look like I am wearing brown sleeves when I look in the mirror coming out of the shower, I played 5 holes without a shirt. 😱  Never saw another soul and the rabbits, prairie dogs and roadrunners didn't seem to mind. Got some much needed vitamin C and while far from evening out my "tan" I at least got a little color on my cadaver looking trunk. 

 

... THE OTHER LITTLE EXPERIMENT I DID WAS PLAYING MUSIC MUCH LOUDER THAN I EVER WOULD DURING A NORMAL ROUND. For me it was just silly loud but the real eye opener was even that loud echoing around in the cart, I could barely hear it on the green, and some holes with a little elevation from cart path to green I could not hear it at all. So if playing music at a level I found almost uncomfortable all alone, how LOUD do the Drunk Bro's have to be playing their music to hear it a full fairway away? It really has to be obnoxiously loud and makes me realize they absolutely know it can be heard from faaaaaar away but just don't give a sh!t.

... Funny thing about th winds here in Phoenix. Late winter and early spring can produce 15-25 mph winds when we don't want or need it. Then 115* and above rolls around in the simmer and quite often there is little to no wind when we really need it. Although when it is 116* the wind kinds felt like a hair dryer on high heat. 🙄

Great post.  You’re absolutely correct. I’d argue that it’s not that they don’t care. They’re doing it on purpose so as to assert their dominance.  So they care a great deal .  The law of the jungle says that if I’m correct in that assertion , you can walk over and pee on their cart with no recourse. 😂.   Just a thought.
