Bryson's new PING irons (*** NO LIV REFERENCES/DISCUSSIONS ***)

Recommended Posts

So, whats the deal with Bryson's new irons and wedges? Looks like he's playing i230s and Glide wedges. Not super surprised about the irons, but what happened to the Artisan wedges? Are the irons also single length or has he moved on from those?

Is Ping really going to put up with Bryson’s demands?  Or are the Ping irons and wedges a one and done deal.

I've always liked that Bryson does it his way, and I mean he doesn't care about the number on the bottom of the club, its consistent spin/launch numbers he looks for from watching several of his YT videos.

Sure his 4i is the loft of a 2i but it hits the launch/spin he needs, who really cares.  Like I play i525s and my 6i goes over 200 yards, not because I have it super strong or swing ungodly fast or anything, but thats the length that I need it to go to fit my gaps that I prefer so I can play my 5 wedge set up.

5 wedges?????

46/50/54/58/62 bruh.

I'd rather have options where I'm trying to hit it close vs options of just trying to hit it on/around a green.  My wedge game is an absolute strength for me so I could make it work with 3 and have a 2i and 3i, or just I could have the 5 wedges and a 3h.

I always wonder….what is the payoff for Ping here? They probably spent hundreds of man hours and thousands of dollars dialing these in. Outside of this forum, zero people will know or care. Ping will never release these and even if they did - 10 people will buy them. I guess you are hoping he wins a major this year?

Agree to disagree I guess...  All my chipping is done with the 54/58/62, the 46/50 are essentially just full swing clubs for me.  I'll argue the benefits of more wedges vs irons/hybrids at the top end of your bag all day long for the non-professional golfer.

That’s cheap publicity if he keeps them in the bag.  No one is gonna see them and want what he has but they will take note that the pickiest guy in golf chose ping once he didn’t have a contract.

This. Not to mention that the cost of making those irons, despite how painful it must have been, is far less than it would be to sign Bryson to an equipment contract.

I'd argue wasting gapping on 3 chippers is a mistake.

I go

48⁰ - 165

54⁰ - 140

60⁰ - 125

Anything under 125 is 60⁰ unless I'm playing in heavy wind.  Adding 2 more clubs is just wasted space.

My bigger challenge is filling the sub 3 wood tee shots and long par 5 approaches when the swing is feeling good.

I play a 2 iron for stingers and a 5 wood that spins 5k+ and is basically a 250-280 wedge that rips back.

Those two clubs provide way more utility than complicating my wedge game.

What does a 54 accomplish that a flighted 60 doesn't?

I rock 5 wedges too. 44/48/53/58/63.

I hope they charged him $10k for the build.

I find the 410 Crossover interesting. Like, why the 410 and not the 425?

I'm pretty sure Ping was willing to spend the time and money to build a custom set for Bryson. Even if nothing comes of it there's an opportunity for them to pick up some good engineering and design analysis for future clubs from a top tour player that's willing to think outside the box.
