What makes a great golf day?

Recommended Posts

Pure conditions. Lush and short cut fairways, fast but super receptive greens, 75 degrees, sunshine, light breeze. Not a single sound from a car, mower or leaf blower. Nobody on the course I can see.

I've experienced this a few times in the past and I've played some of my best golf on those days.

Playing golf with my Wednesday group of 60 to 80 year olds. Friendly 5 dollar a player  , 2 goes to birdie, the 3 goes to closest to the pin on the par 3. The conversation after is the best.

Nice weather makes it nice, even better if I'm hitting decent shots. Being out golfing is the main thing.

Great day? Going skiing in the morning, playing golf in the afternoon and hitting the trifecta in the bedroom that  evening. But it only happened once.

  • 2 weeks later...

A wide open course ahead of me, not having to wait to hit a single shot.

That happened to me once (many years ago) at the Ocean Course at Kiawah, of all darned places. Mid-August 3pm round, heat index about a zillion. Guess nobody else was foolish enough to be out there.

It literally doesn't get any better than that.

The best days are when you can get all the players in your group on the same vibe. Whether we're all grinding for a score or just in it for the hang, golf is best when the combined energy of the group is feeding itself versus fighting itself.

I play most of my rounds with one or two foursomes pulled from a rotating cast of about 16 guys. We have a couple of different games we play that have been refined over the years to include everyone and keep the game fun.

If we have two foursomes we'll usually play what we call the Devil's Taint: 6 holes of single lowball, 6 holes of double lowball, and 6 holes of triple lowball. This format lets the better players carry the group in the beginning and the weaker players contribute toward the end of the round once they're as warmed up as they're going to get.

With a single foursome we usually play Dot Day. This is a skins variation with no carryovers. To win a dot you have to have the lowest score on the hole with no ties. If there's a tie there's no dot and no carry over. Birdies are worth an extra dot.

When we're playing Dot Day the term "dot day" becomes a catch all reason/excuse for choosing the most fun option. Should I lay up or go for it? Should I have a Bloody Mary at the turn? "Dude...it's dot day. Go for it." Keeps the mood right!

One of my most memorable days was from several years ago, a buddy and I had the course to ourselves. We had an afternoon tee time and it rained pretty hard in the morning and there was still some light rain around our tee time. I think our tee time was around 1p and we were the first ones to show up to play all day. The pro shop was about to close due to this. It was pretty surreal experience being just the two of us on the entire course. We had a blast and enjoyed every minute of it. Around hole 16 we saw another group that had just started.

These days a great golf day is just being out there playing, what makes it even better is my 6 year old loves tagging along and has been with me almost every round the last 2 years. Doesn't matter how I'm playing, it's just great being out there with him sharing the game that I love.

It’s all about the people I’m playing with. The best memories I have from golf, the ones that stick with ya, are about the people, not the course or the shot or the weather.

I thought I’d had golf taken away from me for good. Every time I get to put a tee in the ground is a great golf day!

Today was a pretty good one, got a text from a friend yesterday that he and his son were going out and they had a BOGO deal they could use for me. Joined them for a 7:45 tee time, no one in front of us or behind us all round. Walked a fairly tough course and finished in under 4 hours. Perfect weather, 70s and low humidity. Played pretty well and had a nice lunch out on the upstairs patio/bar. Total cost around $50 including lunch. 😁

Only lost one ball and even that one shouldn't have happened. Hit my tee shot just left of the green on a par 3 and we couldn't find it! Bizarre.
