What makes a great golf day?

Recommended Posts

Two really stand out.

The first one was when I played with my dad and a husband and wife who were good friends of my parents. I should mention my mom had died just a few years earlier. The wife, a former champion at her club, was in remission with cancer. She and I rode together at their private club in Monterey. She and my mom were close and very similar people. I don't remember much about the golf. It was just a delightful day spent with three wonderful people. This was probably 20 years ago.

The other is quite a bit different. I'm in a regular Friday skins game. This time we had two groups playing. There's also money on all the par threes - closest to the hole wins. The 17th is a 200 yard par 3 - a challenge for us mid cap guys. There was a small back up so the second group finished 16 before the first group teed off on 17. When that happens all of us tee off with the first group finishing the hole while the second waits. It's actually faster than having the second group wait to tee off until the first putts out.

We had a great time for each tee shot as it approached the green. The camaraderie and fun reminded me of why I enjoy the game.

OK, a third - taking my dad to play Pebble. Hard to beat that.

Regular golf days, my preference is an early morning game for a few bucks, then brunch and a cocktail or two, then an extra 9 or 18 playing a different format like foursomes, or scramble.

Atypical golf days, can’t beat walking 36 at a destination course like sand valley or Erin hills then shoes off with some beers for a par 3 and or putting contest.

Great friends or my brother in the group.

Decent to great weather.

Course in great condition tee to green.

Swing that actually shows up for the day.

Doesn't matter where or when. If these four things align it is a great day of golf.  Three of the four and it's still a pretty damn good day.

It's not my home course because It's a goat track.  The guys I play with make it great.

We have a mix of serious players, jokers, and train wrecks..........but all very good guys.

There is always something entertaining going on whether it's someone playing really well, or like last weekend when we had one player hit himself with own golf ball twice during the round.

A day where I don't need to wait on every shot for a group in front.

I don't care if it is not fast because I'm retired, I have no where to go. So I enjoy being outside, walking the course with nature.  I just don't like my game predicated on the speed of the people in front of me.

Patiently waiting for April 1 when all the northerners go home!!!!

It could be so many things.

I mean i really enjoy playing a course with good friends who are casual golfers because im usually trying to play my best, and play in a lot of comps. So a fun round with work friends and beers is always a great time

Playing a resort on the Ocean when on vacation is also very cool

But, playing in say, the final group of a tournament is also a thrill.

I think lots of things make a great golf day

We have met two couples in our neighborhood who play golf. Had been out with each couple a couple of times a year over the past few years. Wonderful people.

Two years ago one of the ladies had breast cancer and a double mammography. Last year, we went out with her, on her first time golfing since recovering.

That was a wonderful day. Watching her do something she loves to do.

Had one of my most fun days this weekend!

Played in a strange event with multiple formats across different stretches of the 18-hole round. Some holes were Captain's Choice. Some were Four Ball. Others were a worst-ball thing.

To sum it up, it was as much fun as I've ever had. Everyone played pretty well and without question every single one of us did something to save the team at one point or another along the way. I can't believe we managed to go bogey-free considering the format, but we did. The energy was fantastic. We were howling the whole time and we ended up winning.

I made a bunch of putts out of the gate and bombed my tee shots all day. Our low-handicap got us an eagle all by himself along with a couple really clutch up-and-downs. And our high-handicaps absolutely played a big role on a couple holes with some critical pars.

There's nothing better than when the team plays well and everybody gets to contribute!

Any day golfing with my son.  Now 23, discovering golf so we get to play more frequently.  It's great watching him learn to appreciate the game, and the flashes of how good he could be.  Grateful for these times before he gets dragged down by life's other commitments and time to get out to play gets too short.

A few days have stood out to me:

2016 - played Sawgrass with my buddy and his pop. It was a 5.5 hour round, but we enjoyed every minute of it. Taking in the sights, enjoying the heck out of the course. And they paired us with a member at Sawgrass who took us into the Champions locker room after the round. That was pretty cool.

2012 - I tagged along with my wife to Vegas. She had a two-day work conference. Both days I played 36 holes, teeing off at 7 am as a single with no one ahead of me. I was done with 36 in 4 hours 45 mins, and that included a 20 minute stop in-between rounds for a snack. I also had to wait on a few foursomes in my replay round. I was back to the hotel by 1:00, showered and then down to the casino for 3 hours of poker. Then met the wife for dinner and drinks after.

2017 - The last day of our three day boys trip. 8 guys, and we were keeping a net scoring leaderboard over the 3 days. I was in the final group on the last day. I was a 7 or 8 index at the time, and I was 3 strokes back of a guy who was a 26 I think. I was playing great on the front, but every time I'd drop a par or something, I'd glance at the leaderboard and the 26-capper would drop a bogey and he'd be getting two strokes on the hole. So while I was playing good, I was almost always losing ground to him or at best, treading water.

About 8 or 9 holes in I decided to stop playing against him, and just play because I figured I just wasn't going to catch him with all his strokes. I then glanced at the leaderboard score of one of my other buddies who was in the group ahead of us. He was about the same handicap as I was at the time, and we always have a fun rivalry. I noticed we were actually neck-and-neck gross score. So new goal, beat him instead.

We're coming up hole 18, a par 5, and we're about to hit our approach shots. The friends in the group ahead are done putting and are now standing off the back of the green to watch us come up. I hit my third shot to pin-high, about 15 feet. We drive up, and my one buddy approaches me. I say "what'd you end up shooting on the last hole?" because he hadn't inputted it yet. He says he parred it for a 76. I smirk at him, and he says "what are you putting for?". I say "birdie, which would give me a 75".

Don't I get up there, with all the other guys in our group watching and drain it. As soon as it dropped in, all the guys let out a huge roar while my one buddy grins and says "you a**hole".
