Training aids that helped you?

Hey team, curious what training aid helped you the most and what did it help fix?

My main issues, I think are tempo and staying on plane. I can get to fast and just all hell breaks loose. Would the orange whip or your striker ball be beneficial for me to practice at home?

Also putting needs a lot of work if anything in particular helped you.

Two things have helped me. First, my homemade heavy club. Many years ago I went to Home Depot and bought a 40" length of steel rod, had a hole drilled at one end and using a wood dowel I epoxied an old 4-iron head I had lying around, painted it red, and attached a training grip on it. It's fu**ing heavy, but it's great training for building up the golf muscles and learning to swing on plane.

The second thing was buying a set of driveway markers at Walmart and use them as alignment sticks. In the back of Ben Hogan's Five Lessons he talks about ball position, and I use the sticks to help me with ball position. This upcoming golf season I'll be concentrating on ball position, since that's given me some problems in the past.

For putting I use a metal club ruler to calibrate my eye, seems to work really well for me:

I have a lot of training aids LOL.  At the moment I would say that the best one is a broom that that I do Milo Line's hockey stick drill with.  Might be similar Monte's broom drill.

I just bought some Salted insoles and have noticed a flaw in my weight shift pattern so that may prove to be useful, don't know yet.

I use a piece of tape on the face of the club to check impact location which was a huge eye opener when I first did it.  I sometimes thought that heel shots were off the toe.

So, of the somewhere around 40 swing training devices I have tried a piece of tape and broom are the champs.  Of course if you consider video a swing training device then that is number one.

Edit:  Forgot Focus Band, that works and seems to help me to play better when I practice with it.

Hanger from WatsonGolf. Much better positions everywhere in my swing and showing it on the course. Probably biggest difference is longer irons, hybrid and fairway wood strikes. The longer swings basically. I've been able to take advantage of par 5's now that I can hit 2 shots in a row equaling 500yds. out where it matters.

Matzie ASSIST. I've used one for over 40 years.

Down Under Board. The adjustable one. Teaches you how to use your feet properly, and for most, stop EE.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Use a BOOK to fix things with putting...... Can you hit it to where you want? Does your alignment system work and does your stroke work....

Use any small hard object like a book.  Hit balls to the spine of the book.  Find a dead straight part of green or at home.

Aim at a single letter from only 2 feet away.  Can you hit the same spot or purposely hit a millimeter to the left or right of your spot.  If you can you know that your alignment works for one and secondly that your stroke works too.

Now back up and hit em from further then take that to putting at the hole.

Book is better then hole to start cause can aim at a very small letter and its faster to just pull the ball back with putter when the ball is taller then the book and dont wanna bend over constantly to pull out of hole...

Remember its not about making putts but making them exactly where you want in the cup....  you'll see your friends celebrating making bad low side putts on short ones when your making better high side putts and not squeaking in like a thief in the night lol :classic_ninja:

Not so much a training aid but I use a cut in half tennis ball for early extension. Put it underneath your right heel (righty golfer) and make sure you heel stays pressing down through impact. Have to make sure you don't lean back on it though

Similar to other training aids made to help keep people from running the weight out of their shoes.   Another one, one I think more useful,  puts the 1/2 cut ball cut side up where you would address a golf ball so now you only have the bottom half of the ball to hit and see if that visual doesn't bring forth a very clean shallow strike.

Many old timers did, and there are some teaching moments in there too, but I won't infringe upon your discovery fun if you so choose.

I swung out from underneath myself, from the lower part of my body.   Byron Nelson

That No More Throw is a great video!

What is the "grip adjustment" that the pro makes him do?

Not sure what you mean but Milo adjusted the students trail hand from underneath which would be extremely strong to more of palm facing the target.  From a bit under to less under.

I've made hundreds of aids, from planemate type aids to prosendr things, and the best by far are:

A phone or Ipad to record your swing, I record each swing on the range, this has two benefits, it makes me look like I know what I'm doing on the range, and it slows my practise down.

A Tee, place it an inch or two target side of the ball and try and clip it with your irons on the way through for better iron strikes.

A dumbbell, kettlebell, bucket with balls in, to do Dr Kwons kettlebell drill, which just helps with my timing

A stick of some sort for alignment

This might sound like a stupid question, but do you have a pic or video to reference for this one?

Sure, setup with the tee like this. Swing hit the ball then try and clip the tee out of the ground. You don't want to take a huge divot though!

It promotes a nice angle of attack. You can also move the ball closer or further away from you, to promote an out to in, or in to out path

for an added bonus, you can use two tees to try to improve strike location

and and then combine all three tees 🙂

Tour rotation stick for body rotation and swing plane and a izzo band for connection.  I use a few putting aids but for full swing both of those are my go to’s.
