P790 2021 Unicorns

Unicorns.  Eliminated fliers and they are very consistent, if need more spin just bend a degree or two weak and reduce offset at the same time.  Crazy forgiving, consistent and accurate.  Unis!

Consistently top 2/3 best selling irons in my shop the past 5 years.  Taylormade has the market nailed on this.  It feels good, goes like stink, and is tremendously forgiving.  Makes me wonder each year WTF I am doing not playing them.

They actually are very consistent, they just go way, way too far for my liking. I like the 220/180 carry number of my i210’s for the 4 iron/7 iron. With the p790’s those numbers are 250/210, respectively.

This. Kind of interested in experimenting 2 degrees weak but still, less clubs covering the bottom of the bag seems not great at stock when they go that far.

P790s are for the old guys who used to hit their AP2 7 iron 175, but hit the T100 7 iron 150.  I have a few playing partners that play 790s for this reason.....

Says the guy with ZX5 and G410 in bag.  790s way more player setup than ZX5, monster sole width with extreme offset in those heads.  G410?  Really?  My 60 year old 300 pound 22 handicap buddy plays G410.

More ball speed, less spin. Can't remember the 4 iron spin numbers, but I know with a 7 iron it was like 6000 rpm compared to 7400 rpm with my sticks. Ball speeds were 6-7 mph faster too.

They are nice irons but far from being the unicorns as they did basically start the players distance iron category

Well, the numbers say about 20 yards but any idea/guesses how TM obtained 6-7 mph more ball speed; loft-for-loft of course.

I am coming from mizuno 921 forged. After all the things I read about the 790s, I was worried. I got with my fitter and was surprised that I spun them too much. I delofted them 1° and thought I would have a hard time filling gaps but my spin numbers were great at this point. I do hit them long, but I have no real gaps five through pitching wedge. I hit the ball very high as is and these helped get in the correct window. I have not experienced any fliers and I get plenty of stopping power as I had a decent angle of 50° with them. Love them so far.

I think my ball striking inconsistency was the issue. I'd toe a few then find the sweet spot, toe a few more, then a few sweet spots haha. I'm not good enough for them,  G400's are more my speed.

I played--and enjoyed them!--for a year before moving to a blended set of Zx5/Zx7 which just flat out performed better for me. I spin the Srixons slightly less, but higher launch & still saw no trouble holding greens, so I gained maybe a 1/2 club. V-sole is a game changer for my AoA, and they felt much better than the TMs to me.

No question though, P790s walked so other OEMs could run with the player's distance design--they're great clubs.

I tried the last 2 generations of ZX5.  I’m  a 2 handicap that likes a little bit of extra forgiveness and meat in my irons.  ZX5 checked the box for me from address but those wide soles just no good for me.  I like just a traditional flat sole on my irons and those V soles especially in the ZX5 are just too damn wide and the turf interaction just weird.  21’ P790 is almost identical to ZX5 at address but has less offset, way thinner soles and I found them way more forgiving and just as consistent in spin, launch and ball speed.  Everyone knocks the last two gens of P790s for distance consistency, my point is TM listened and made the current gen incredibly consistent and I found to be very reliable due to the newer engineering and moi forgiving design.  They also offer a bit more distance which I won’t kick out of bed.  To each their own but tired of people saying these are “inconsistent”.  They are just the opposite, forgiving, more of a players profile than most in class, less offset and a more traditional player sole than others in same class and they deserve some recognition for what they offer to better players.

Yeah I also never saw any “jumpers” in my 790s. I liked them, it mostly just came down to feel for me.  Shaft may have had a part in it, too. DG 105s in the 790s & now have modus 105s in the Srixons. For me it’s just a nicer feeling combo all around.

I am not a 2 HCP but a 5.9.  Irons are the weakest part of my game.  I simply miss too many greens.  I was pretty set on going to a ZX5/ZX7 combo set following my 921 Forged.  I’m with you.  I love the V sole, I just can’t get along with that wide sole.   The ZX7 look great I just want some more forgiveness from them.  The P790 just worked for me.  So far I haven’t seen any jumpers or lack of consistency that some mention.  Still in a honeymoon phase, I guess.

i had a brand new set of the 21 P790s (right after they came out) that were almost immediately booted by the Gen3 0311P's...shocked the hell outta me.

Mike Honcho ladies and gents. Spread his buttcheeks and the truth.

p790 is a big OEM rip off of PXG, they even got sued over it.

Glad you like them, but it makes me think you haven’t hit pxg (especially the new ones… 😃)

My gen2p easily were better than all generations of the 790s and feel so much softer you’d thing the 790s are Ping Gs circa 2000s. The Gen6P is miles better than my gen2. No unexpected fliers. Crazy good.

TM has marketing budget for sure. Just give the PXG a run. Let’s be honest “kaboom baby” ain’t much more corny than “fargiveness” 🤣
