Consequences for not fixing ball marks?

We are talking about the same thing. I'm just offering a different perspective.

If people know it's 73 year old Carl, who they play in the Blitz with every saturday, on hole 15, they're probably gonna throw him a bone and take care of their ball marks and then some.

As it stands, it's the maintenance crew who are nameless and faceless to most, so most don't have any issue leaving their ball marks for them to clean up.

Not me. Screw Carl. I hate that guy. I hope he spends all night repairing my ball marks and raking my bunkers.

I do think some courses bring it on themselves. One I play at regularly has one short par three with hump in the middle. It's probably the easiest green to hit in regulation as it's really a wedge from an elevated tee. As a result it is just peppered with pitch marks.

As for getting people to repair them, well I guess you need one person in a group to call out others who aren't. Unless your course can afford staff to sit out on holes, or members.

Not really a consequence, but I do think courses should put signs in their golf carts or scorecards with basic rules like everyone is expected to play ready golf, fill their divots, rake bunkers, fix ball marks, etc. Oh, and yell fore when their shot is going way off line.

OTHER THINGS TO BE POSTED ON CARTS

Remember to floss your teeth every night, obey the posted speed limit on the Interstate and do unto others as you'd have them do unto you.

And call your mom once in a while, she'd love to hear from you.

The most pitch marks I have repaired on a single green is about 12. They were fairly deep and obvious to see. Could have repaired more. This was at a private club. The general rule I follow is I like to repair 2 pitch marks, mine and another one.  Perhaps clubs could give away free pitch mark repair tools as a reminder to golfers.

It doesn’t matter, most won’t use them. And if they do, half will break the roots by twisting the pitch mark or pushing up the pitch mark.

You can’t win.

As the population increases the number of stupid people increases. If you don’t believe it, go for drive.

This whole thing of somehow making people into better humans is a waste of energy. You can’t fix stupid.

In the caddiemaster's office should be a piece of turf and all players signing up for the round need to show that they have a tool and how they repair a pitch-mark. Caddiemaster teaches the ones who do not know how.

I haven't been on a course with caddies, or a caddiemaster, in 30 years...

...and the only reason riffraff like me was allowed on the course was because I was a caddie.

Comments like Mr. Bean's always remind me of what a wide, wide world Golf is. If I were not active in online golf discussions, I'd never in a million years think there were still caddies and "caddiemasters" anywhere except a few resorts and a handful of super high-$$$ private clubs.

The golf I see and experience everyday is mostly tubby middle-aged guys riding around in golf carts with the occasional oddball walker like myself pushing a Speed Cart. When I hear golfers mention "caddies" they are invariably talking about TV golf, not the golf they actually play.

So what percentage of rounds played this week in USA do we think will involve a caddie? I'm guessing something less than 1%, maybe? Probably closer to 1-in-1000.

Okay, I've been around golf for more than 2 decades now. I've watched golf. I've played golf (though obviously not much at elite private clubs or outside the contiguous USA. Still, I'm clueless here. Can someone explain to me what a 'caddiemaster' is? By name it sounds like a term a woke generation would love to tackle. mathews_smile.gif

Around here we use that title to describe the person to whom you sign up for the round, i.e. office personnel. I am quite sure there is an office on every golf course also on your side of the pond.

Maybe this clears things up a bit.

P.S. Originally a caddiemaster was the supervisor of caddies, a boss.

It's the character Bryan Doyle-Murray played in Caddyshack.

Yep. My old boss roughly 31 years ago lol...

On this side of the pond the term (to every sign I've seen) has died.

Caroline, but she just quit and moved to St Augustine with her boyfriend after his mill was closed down. It's feared she will be replaced by some spotty youth.

Knowledge of the Rules is part of the applied skill set which a player must use to play competitive golf.

If you’re looking for more excitement on the golf course, start lecturing people about their behavior.

Order them to line up at attention and instruct them about ball mark repairing, raking bunkers, repairing divots, etc.

It’s a great way to make new friends.

“the first thing to keep in mind is that we’re all here to have a good time and enjoy ourselves.

with that out of the way, i’ll hand it over to john the caddiemaster for his brief 35 minute presentation on fixing ball marks and proper bunker raking.

have some fun out there, everyone!”

You forgot about the awkward, 10 minute "ice breaker exercise" at the beginning where everyone is required to state a fun fact about themselves

Grampa got me started in golf and told me to always fix mine and 2 others. Nowadays I'll fix mine and as many more as time allows.

I will say that the suggestion to have golfers show the starter or pro or other a fixing tool is a good idea. Basically "here is what you need, this is what it's for and this is how you use it."

Hilarious, just like the other two responses.

Around here all people practicing a profession have a title. Apparently this culture has not yet arrived on that side of the pond. One of many...
