How many 3 putts do you make per round?

nvr3putt

I don't know for sure, but the last 9-hole round I played last week, I 3-putted 5 out of the 9 greens.  That's pretty typical for me, even with my odyssey putter.  As for what I"m doing about it?  Not much of anything, just try to focus better next time.

Depends on how many holes I'm putting from 40, 50, 60 feet or more for my first putt.

Long-term, going back several years, I average about 1.7 three-putts per round. More recently, in the past year it's been 1.5 three-putts per round.

The average isn't all that helpful because it's streaky. For instance I have not had a single three-putt in my last 4-1/2 rounds (4 full rounds plus a 9-hole one). But before I had back-to-back rounds where I three-putted at least 3 times each.

I don't have an average but I likely 3 putt around 3-5 holes per round. Par 3's are eating my strokes too.

What I did about it? Puttout mat and put trainer. Also picked up the sklz putt pocket. I'm not going to tell you that it magically took 10 strokes off my game because it didn't. But my rolls are becoming more consistent thus getting me closer to the hole for the 2 putt.

Not that often, but it depends greatly on the greens (some courses are relatively easier or way tougher than others), and the pin placements of the day (also can be everything from easy to wicked tricky).

Home course, not very often. Last 3 putt I had was when I drove the green on a reachable par 4 which also is one of the trickier greens. Where I have more 3 putts is on courses that I don't play often, so I'm not doing much about it.

Honestly, I'd like to 3 putt more often as they usually come from being on the green in less shots.

I don't keep stats, but its probably around 1 per round as an average. I tend to either not have one or have 2 or 3 in  a round.

In the last year I have changed to a Superstroke grip and added a line to the ball to help with alignment. I really didn't want to do this, it is one of my real pet hates waiting for people who spend ages going backwards and forwards making tiny adjustments. But it has helped me, especially on the shorter putts.

I find the 3 putts normally come when I hit a terrible approach shot with a wedge leaving like 40 or 50 feet. Going from trying to give yourself a look at birdie to scrambling for par is tough.

3 putts are typically speed related. Spend some time lagging 40 footers.

I noticed this is the case with me; particularly coming up short on my putts, fearing that I'll go long.  It's a mental game that I need to get over.

I once kept track for a while (being a stat-head) and approximately half of my 3-putts over a period of a couple months were for double-bogey or worse.

Playing a hole from 150 yard out in the fairway after chipping sideways out of the trees is no easier than playing the same hole from 150 after a good tee shot. Either way is a 3-putt waiting to happen if you hit that appraoch shot 50' from the hole on the wrong side of a ridge.

I spend a lot of time lagging 40, 50, 60 footers. Let's see, I play 4-5x a week and have 4-5 of those per round. That's nearly 1,000 reps of "practicing" lag putts per year. No wonder I'm so tired all the time.🤔

I think putting mats are good for uber beginners, but there's something about a real green that messes up my aim and distance.

Could you share any tips on how to practice long putts?

I basically do this but only go in one direction instead of two if that makes sense! I'll start at 5 feet and move back 2-3 feet at a time to about 40 feet.

Also, as a very general rule, I try to over-read putts from 20+ feet. If the ball works towards the hole all the time, proximity will be better than a putt working downhill away from the hole (e.g. missing low). Obviously exceptions exist on big double breakers etc.

Ha! 3-putts for par or bogey are the ones that really test my sanity. 👍

There's one very short Par 5 with water in front of the green at my home course. A friend had been bugging me for years to start playing it Driver, 3wood instead of like 7iron, 7-iron, wedge.

So one summer I went for it every time. Hit a bunch of balls in the water but three times I got it on in two.

The first two times, I had huge breaking 60-70 foot putts for eagle. Three-jacked it both times. I thought, "Now I know why the guys on TV get so mad at a 3-putt par". The third time, I hit about a 40-foot eagle putt stone dead and tapped in.

I figured at that point I'd climbed the mountain. So I went back to laying up.

I average less than 1 three-putt per round.  Lots of rounds with no three-putts, then they seem to come in bunches.  Maybe 2 or 3 three-putts in a round, then they go away again.

I would guess between 1-2 is my average. I'm also not hitting many greens these days though, so that makes my putting look better than it probably is.

That brings up an interesting point.

I count it as a 3-putt if my first "putt" is from 3-4 feet into the fringe, not actually on the green. But I don't count it as a "putt" if I'm using the putter from 10-15 yards short of the green in the fairway.

Schedule a fitting. For years I’ve battled putter with 4-6 3 putts on average. Finally had enough and did a fitting and it’s been a game changer. Feel vs real are totally different. Thought I’d need to go shorter and flatter and ended up going an inch longer and more upright.
