Is this normal?

Recommended Posts

Either my course is getting more redneck or I'm losing touch ...

Today, l'm loading up the trunk after finishing 18 at about 4:30 ...as I wipe down the clubs (got rained on a little) I see a guy strapping a BABY in a car seat into the passenger seat of his golf cart.

As I dropped off my cart, there he was at the first tee ... Baby all tied down.

Is that normal?

I brought my oldest a couple times when he was still small enough to fit into his stroller. I always timed it up with his nap time. Always viewed it as a win win, he got rest and some fresh air and I got to play a quick 9. I should point out that when my wife found out about it years later she did NOT see it the same way I did😂

Playing on a vacation round this winter had two couples in front of us in carts.  20-somethings, the girls weren't playing just taking selfies and drinking.  We found their sunglasses on the first tee box.  A cell phone case on the second.  And a car seat (fortunately sans baby) on the cart path at #4.  They'll let anyone be a parent these days.

If the cart isn’t designed to handle the seat and the seat isn’t designed to be used in that fashion (bet it isn’t), it’s completely irresponsible.

I had one of the scariest moments I have ever had at my club last week. We have a beautiful patio that wraps around one side of the 18th green. A family with three young children were enjoying dinner. Someone playing 18 airmailed the green from the extreme right of the fairway and the ball came flying onto the patio. He yelled “fore” but I could see the ball was no where near me and watched the whole flight.

When dad heard “fore” he covered up the kid next to him. The four year old sitting by himself in the chair actually looked up in time to have the ball brush his hair before hitting the table behind him and shattering a glass. I spoke to his dad later and dad said the boy reported feeling the ball on his hair but nothing more. If that ball had been one inch lower, or that boy had sat up one inch taller, he would have been severely injured.

Until a child is old enough to know how to react when they hear “fore” or there is a parent with them ready to cover up at any moment, I’m not sure kids belong on the course. The potential for disaster is just too great.

This.

A year or so ago there was a news story about a young girl(?) who was playing with her father. She was in the cart and her father hit a wild one that hit her and killed her.

who ran out of sunblock.

its not the skin - its the red bandana worn around the neck of the miners that is the etiology of the phrase.  Became synonymous with working class and over the years more Carl Spackler, less judge Smails.

Ive seen the carseat or some apparatus with young kids at both goat tracks and high end privates - I think it's more today's society rather than location.   To really fan the flames, I wonder how many baby seats belong to jogger wearers? 😛

Personally,  late afternoon for a few holes while the baby sleeps and there is no risk of interrupting others - Im all for it.   Parent gets some activity and involves the kid.  Kid gets experience of new places/different stimulations.  Id rather this than the situation someone mentioned earlier with the riders only out for some drinks or brining a few wondering toddlers on the course at 10am on a Saturday.

Is the baby dressed in Camo, drinking from a Skoal-laced baby bottle and carrying a miniature AR-14?

If not, I'm not exactly sure where the idea of 'redneck' came from. Sounds more metrosexual to me. Was he lugging a murse with the golf bag?

I think the value of having your kids with you far outweighs the danger of getting hit.  Yes, it happens, but it is extremely rare.  Especially if you are careful about where you park the cart.

I've played thousands of rounds of golf and never been hit by a ball.  The odds are minuscule.  I'm guessing that the odds of having a car wreck on the way to the course are greater than a child getting hit by a ball.

What value is there to having a baby strapped in a car seat who has no idea where they are and you're not paying attention to them?

I have never done it myself but kind of wish I would have. If I was a member somewhere I would happily put my little one in the jogging stroller and walk 5-9 holes. Really I don’t see it much different that a 60 minute walk or run and we do that a couple times a week anyway.

I do have a buddy that has put his youngest in a car seat like you are describing. Looks odd but it was actually moms idea. They own their own cart and live on course. Not just showing up to a random muni with a baby in tow lol

If you're going off later in the day and it's not blazing hot out, I see no issues with it, not sure how this is a redneck thing.  I've seen a ton of parents bring their babies to the range this year.  I think it's cool to see people out and about not viewing their kid as the end of life.
