Transition - left hand pull or right hand push

Recommended Posts

  • getitdaily changed the title to Transition - left hand pull or right hand push

This'll be different for every type of top of the backswing position, strength of grip and intent of the shot being played, personally for me, it's left hand feel to do the downhinge/downcock/whatever you want to call it, to get into the position to then swing through using the right side, i just feel my left is going knuckles down at the 9 o'clock position so moving it that way in transition.

For me generally right arm and right shoulder thoughts are best

Which one are you and is there a "better" feel of the two?  Or is this a matchup element?

Maybe a very important factor is missing in either pushing or pulling?

The wrists need a fulcrum point to act in a "reactiv" way.

The squeezing of the elbows in the downswing might be a proper method?

If i do it correct i can feel a heavy hit.

I'm upper left arm , then lower right arm. Went years having driver/fairway issues and when I realized that my left arm was too passive, those issues dried up. Would say this is very individualistic and feel is not real thinking applies too. But idea it's one or another, that there's a primary & secondary is limiting. It's both for me.

I don't understand hardly anything I've just read. Elbow squeezing, upper left then lower right, right push after crank, underhand right pull......and you guys can still play golf?

Sometimes I'm scared to open some of these threads and getting in my own head. Love hearing what works for some people though. What a crazy game.

Going to depend on yourself.  I can't do right arm feels and they get me into right tilt waaaay too early and I'm right handed.  For me, left side feels get me in a better position.  Flex the left wrist in transition and I stripe it....extend the right wrist and I dump way under and chuck it every time.

Neither for me, pushing or pulling for me leads to a steep down  swing. My general transition feel is either hands or arms depending on the day. If I feel my path is good I just try to get my arms to drop my hands down to my right pocket.  If I feel like things are getting steep, I like my hands to feel like they move away from the target in transition (using Monte's no cast clock they move away towards 7 or 8 o clock assuming noon and 6 is the target line.

I feel the clubhead in my hands, but I don't actively ever try to do anything with them.  More about timing than anything, get in the right spot, then turn and burn.  And that means turn it all.  Hips / Shoulders / Core all go together.  Transition - I'm just trying to get myself in position to be able to turn hard left - which is mostly getting my lead side in a position to turn hard.  I don't try to do anything with shoulders / arms / hands independently.  I just want to feel the weight of the club in the right spot before I turn.

Hogan said he wished he had 3 right hands but he also said that is only half the story. He said you need to hit hard with both hands. In his words page 99 4 Lessons“ if you hit hard with only the right and let the left go to sleep, you will not only lose much valuable power, you will run into all the errors that result when the right hand overpowers the left.”

Hogan mentioned wishing having 3 right hands in the context that he supinated his left wrist. With the left wrist in a supinated position he felt he could apply as much power as he wanted with his right hand without twisting the club over. Hogan used the word supinate but what he really meant was flexion.

Hogan was a big admirer of Jimmy Demaret. He felt by watching Jimmy’s swing that he lashed at the ball with the back of his left hand and I’m sure that’s what Hogan took away from his swing. Without flexion in the left wrist you can’t apply power with the right without errors.

I’m very similar! But I also have to think of swinging my left arm parallel to the ground
