Apex UW September 2023

Sounds like some minor differences, which isn’t a bad thing with this club.  Have retailers started discounting the old model yet?

Not yet. I went out and grabbed a 17 to upgrade my current 19 to better space my distances in my bag a touch. Not a fan of the upgraded looks so wanted to jump before they were gone off the racks.

No discount, but hopefully if they do in the next 30 or so days, I can try for a price protection. I doubt they will, it was never a huge stocking product. If anything maybe late this year, versus losing margins now for the handful retailers may have.

Can anyone give me feedback on the 17 degree? Looking for a powerful driving iron and this seems to fit the bill.

The Apex UW is more of a fairway wood than a hybrid and I haven't hit the new model but the original 17 degree model was low launching and super low spinning so it was tough to get sufficient launch at times, maybe perfect as a driving club off the tee for players with tonnes of speed but not much use off the fairway, the new UW is apparently higher spin so maybe the original UW is the best one for you.

Definitely agree that the previous 17° UW is really hard to get in the air. I have a 17° and a 21°, and the difference in spin and peak height is not explainable by a simple 4° loft difference. Last time I was on a monitor, they actually carried the same distance for me, but the 17° rolled out twice as far as the 21°. I definitely need to reevaluate that part of my bag, but I hit the UW's so much better than other fairways or hybrids, it's not even close.

I play the 17 at 42 1/4, with ball speeds 155-160 and to me it plays about like a triple diamond 4 wood.  Spin is between 3500 and 4000 usually.

I play my 19° at 42 1/4.

Very interested in getting the numbers tracked.

I bought the 21..... best club I ever bought.... bought the 17.... couldn't launch it (wanted so badly for that club to be the 2nd longest club in my bag)... bought the 19, could launch it a bit more, but didn't make sense to carry a 19 and 21. Sold the 17 and 19. Will be buried with the 21.

Very interested to see how everyone hits the new 17. I'd definitely hand Callaway more money if there's reports of a 17 that has launch.

currently bagging an LAGP Bryson Signature Series wood shaft, 75g stiff. Although I just swapped one out of my 17° to try the TPT Red 16/Lo fwy shaft in it.

You play it more like a FWY than HYB?

Yes. I always have struggled to hit a proper fwy wood, and never really got along with hybrids. Somehow, the Apex UW takes the best of both of those clubs, and gets rid of the worst. The 17° UW is the second longest club in my bag, I treat it like a 3W. I usually hit driver around 280-300yds if I catch it right, and the 17° UW I count on a total distance of ~250yds.

Edit: It takes a .335 wood shaft, not a hybrid shaft, so there's that to think about. It makes it hard to fit for, because even a Club Champion type place isn't going to have a set of wood shafts that are cut and tipped in a way that only makes them usable to fit for a single head.

Oh good to know, I guess I would play the 19* like a 7w then.

I've tried a few different ones, but my current shaft is an Attas T2 8s in it my 21*.  It launches nice and high and not overly spinny with that combo.  I've tried a few 70g options, but I prefer the heft of an 80g+ shaft at a shorter length.

I play my 17* and 19* both at 3/4” short and both with Diamana ZF 70’s.  Love the 21* and really like the 17* but I can hit a big cut/slice with 17* if I don’t really think about what I am doing.  Seems like the 17*, at least the head I have, seems to be very open at address so actual loft could be lower.

Nonissue elevating it just control can be questionable.

My 19 is much more like a hybrid.  I changed the shaft to a ADDI and that has it launching higher for me but still considerably lower than a 5 wood and much much lower than a 7 wood.  Played -1/2” it has been perfect in the 3 hybrid slot and gaps well off of my 5 wood (turned down) even though there is only a 2.5 degree difference in loft.  With the stock RDX blac’ it was very good, even though that is a shaft that would normally not suit me at all, but I wanted just a touch more height and spin out of that slot in the bag.

Since the new UWs have more spin, which loft should I get if I want it as 18*?

i would still think the 19, although it is hard to say until we see/do more testing with the new model.y

i would love it if they released the 23 to us mere mortals…

Does anybody have any update on if Callaway still uses that darn collared ferrule for these? I've never been a fan of collared ferrules. I know, I know, my irons are prime offenders.

That's where the "additional spin" is coming from.

So you are saying, because we will need to open the face up, these play with a little more loft due to that hence the greater spin?

Huh?

It was in response so some one responding to someone on how the face looks shut at address. Person I quoted stated, that is where the extra spin is coming from. Then I responded with a question of now having to open the face, create more dynamic loft and therefore more spin.

Opening a face does NOT create more dynamic loft. It does the opposite. Opening a face will reduce loft and thus reduce spin.

Thanks, but for an adjustable hosel, if you loft up, the face closes but then loft stays the same until you open it to square right? That is what I am talking about in this scenario as well. Maybe I am wrong

If you're implying that squaring up the more closed face head is going to add loft and spin then that is assuming the stated loft on the head is irrespective of face angle. Do we know that's the case? Because if the stated loft is referring to the head when sitting square then face angle wouldn't have this effect.
