1993 Setup

norcon

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to get a second bag setup with clubs from my birth year, 1993. Just as a bit of fun and something to tinker with. I'm struggling to find what year clubs were manufactured in from that far back. I'm thinking TP-19 for the irons but outside of that I'm a bit stuck, any thoughts or ideas? TIA

I built a nostalgia bag a year ago. Here is the set up:

Driver: Great Big Bertha 9* w/ RCH Strong

3 wd:  Bertha War Bird 3 wd/ 6.0 Rifle Shaft

2 Iron: BeCu Ping Eye 2 Blue Dot

3-SW: Tommy Armour Golden Scott 845 w/ Fenwick Stiff Shafts

SW&LW: Cleveland BeNi 56* & 60*

Putter: BeCu Ping Answer 2

Thanks for your reply, some really cool stuff in there, especially that BeCu 2 iron!

I'm a fan of Couples and Els, so immediately the 1992 Parallax irons that couples used to get to worlds #1 and win a big tournament that spring come to mind. Obviously Ping was killing it then too with Eye2's and BECU models.

A good source, would be older dudes you know that were playing then. Also if you can get back issues of the major mags, Golf Magazine, Golf Diget, Todays golfer.

Another way to find out is to look thru major winners bags, that info is available in the internet. I think Davis Love was on team Tommy Armour 845's.

Titleist is blades from that era might be good. I think the DCI's came a couple of years later.

Far as woods. I wouldn't do it. I'm all for value and fun but it's been my experience that old old drivers ultimately aren't fun. Maybe for the other fairways.

Might be fun to look into super concords, olimar or tight-lies but I don't think they were popular yet.

Of course I loved my Fresh-metals and pro trajectory fairway woods those 2 might be fun. Taylor mades Pittsburgh Persimmons were popular then too.

Also wouldn't play a retro ball either. Not worth.

Happy 30th!

Jones and Ping hoofers were popular then

Now going retro clothes I'd def do that over retro drivers.

Thanks for the reply and ideas! Very tempted to buy some old magazines just for the fun of it too now. I may not be able to find everything from 1993, but clubs that were being used in that year will be good enough.

I only live an hour away from Royal St. Georges too which held the open that year, would be great to add some Norman/Faldo gear in there too.

Don't worry I wasn't going to use an old ball, don't want to make this impossible lol

If you want retro with a modern twist from back then I'd suggest looking for a Yonex ADX 200 Driver, which from memory was the first carbon headed driver, 20 years before Callaway tried it and 30 years before TM. Properly long for the time, although not necessarily that forgiving.

93 -let's see probably a set of Woosie Maurman - though a set of Joe Powell CB were always lurking.

The original  S2H2 driver(Fenwick 6.0 i think?)and dbl dot 3wd were definitely in the bag. Seems I had twist flex 5wd- most likely the original Heavenwood and some type of  Cobra railer 7wd on rotation.

Ping Eye 2+ BeCu  SW & BeCu Eye 2 SW were in the bag, as well....main stays from the late '80s.

And a BullsEye flange.... always

That Edwin Watts ad brought back some memories.  Lots of good clubs available in 1993.

You're welcome.

I just took a look at the Edwin Watts ad. You need to find a set of Cleveland VAS irons.

Founders Club Driver with a s300 or x100 should play similar to a 3 wood.  Not bad.  3 wood to match.  There were some OK graphite shafts back then if you don't swing too hard.  TM System 2 I think was from this timeframe and OK clubs.

Titleist DTR are DCI lite and really good clubs for the day.  3-P, SW and LW would be a nice set, just like Eye 2 or Zing.

One of the fun things about this era is that you can get S and L that match the set so they are pretty easy to hit if you only play them sporadically.

damn $175-$295 for an original Heavenwood. And people complain about the prices of golf clubs today!

Supposedly unshankable. Also the ugliest irons ever made.

And Corey Pavin won the 1995 US Open with them.

In 1993, I was playing a set of '92 Ben Hogan Apex Forged Ft Worth irons.  Can't remember if they were 1-SW or 2-SW.  That was also the year the Ping Zing driver came out, but I was still using a Hogan Apex Persimmon in Driver and 4w.  Those were likely a '90 or '91 model since I didn't change often.

Great idea.  Enjoy those clubs.  For my generation they aren't old or vintage, just stuff we used to play.

I would get some forged Hogan Apex irons, and maybe a Ping putter from that time frame ... and probably skip the rest.

The ‘92-93 Ft. Worth Apex irons are my favorite from the 30+ years of the Hogan Apex.

The ‘93-94 Channel Backs, on the other hand, are my least favorite. Worst iteration of the Apex irons.

Maybe a technicality because there’s some overlap in the year 1993 here, but I would not recommend the Apex Channel Back iron.

1993, you gotta go with the Founders Club 200 Series irons that Lee Janzen played that year to win the US Open.  Beautiful set of blades that were Miura forged before that became a thing.  I have a set and they are magnificent!

I say go with that season's major winners:

Greg Norman's Cobra Driver

Janzen's irons

Langer's Wilson Wedges (I think he was a Wilson guy back then)

And Azinger's Ping Anser putter.
