9 Wood anyone?

Pete O'Tube

Recommended Posts

I've successfully replaced my 3 iron with a Ping G400 7 wood. I'm now considering replacing my 4 iron with a Ping 9 Wood. I play on a links course where wind is a major factor so is this a silly idea?

Is there anything else I could try? I'm already using Mizuno Fli-Hi irons up to 6 iron.

There's a 3 page thread just down the page from this post. I tried 7 wood. Didn't get along with it. Much more comfortable with a hybrid after my 5 wood.

Really like 9 wood, but it often goes a little longer than I'd like and I don't really want to adjust the loft sleeve since my woods all look the same sitting at -1.

With a ton of wind, it might not be a great idea if you're a higher speed player or have a healthy amount of curvature in your natural shot shape.

I go 4w, 7w and 9w.

Just picked up a SimMax2 9 wood and the thing fantastic.

I bought right before my annual trip to NC for some mountain golf. I didn't even have time to hit it in the range before I left. 2nd swing with it was on a 210 par 3 playing slightly down hill. I hit 3 inches in front of the hole, hit the stick and barely missed my first hole in one. I played in a 4 man scramble on Friday and hit a 205 up hill and landed just over the flag and it actually spun back to within 4 ft fir an easy eagle. Everyone in my group was shocked when they asked what I hit and I told them 9w.

For me, the 9 wood is just so much easier to hit and more consistent than 4i.

I had a 9W in the bag for a while. It’s a fun and easy to hit club but it was tough to play into the wind.  I bought with the stock shaft so maybe not the best fit.

I really like my hybrids to replace the 3 and 4 iron, but would love to find a fairway wood to be able to get more height when I want. The problem I have found is the 7 woods or 9 woods I have personally tried just go straight up and are hard to bring down the flight. And there aren't many demos available in stiff flex shafts.

7w 9w 5h 6h

9w & 5h are basically the same club distance wise - couple more yards carry with 9w(higher flight)- 5h in total distance(flatter trajectory).

Wind you say? I play 15+ daily - you learn to flight and swing smooth IMO - fantastic into the wind once you learn distances

86g in my 9w - 102g in my 6h

That’s good info. I don’t particularly hit the 5h the best. I love to hit fw woods.

So, I think I’ll take out the five hybrid since you say it’s the equivalent of the nine fairway.

That’s great information to have!

Thank you for posting that.

Had a G425 9w with a Ventus Blue 7x shaft and it was a lot of fun. Very consistent, super easy. Only problem is that it was kind of one-dimensional -- it was hard to maneuver left-right or up-down -- because it just went high and straight and that's all. But that's not the worst problem to have.

my daughter used one to get to D1, so I should have known.......

If I keep making more birdies with my 7wd I’m seriously thinking about taking the 4hy and adding a 9 wood. Last 6 rounds, I’ve hit is 9 times and made 6 birdies with it….. It’s the best club in my bag hands down!

I already had a 7 wood in my bag.  This past summer I took the 5i & 6i out of my bad and replaced them with a 9w and 11w.  Best thing I ever did for my golf game.  My "old man" clubs are my favorites to hit.  Laser beam straight with great height/spin to hold greens.  If there was a 13w out there (callaway epic max) - I'd probably buy that too!

Love my 9 wood.  Even added an 11 wood.  They made the game much easier.

The 425 Max 7w I carry is awesome. I’ve been banging a Maltby 9w and it is so great….but I have matchy-matchy equipment OCD so I want a 425 Max 9w. 🙂 I wish there was a 425 Max 11w, I would put that in right away.

I prefer FW woods to hybrids and I could go all in. Krank goes all the way down to a 15 wood (!!) but I don’t think I can commit to that.

I'd go hybrid. If hybrids give you the hooks, then I'd check out some of the more iron-shaped ones that are thinner. Those tend to have less offset. Another advantage to hybrids is they tend to be better out of the rough.
