Agree.  Played it for a long time. Never occurred to me that the uber deep design was probably a little unforgiving but it was so easy to hit the middle of that giant face that I don't think it mattered.  My miss was always a block for whatever reason.

You guys have me going down memory lane on ebay. I think the way you answer this question is what is the one driver you wish you could purchase today in 2024 new in the wrapper?

 

I'm 38 and have been playing/walking through a clubhouse since 1991. I remember when big bertha came out but was too young to appreciate how much a difference it made. My dad was so cool going from Dunlop DDH-2 to a Killer Whale. 

 

But NOTHING and I mean NOTHING was a game changer/panty dropper like a 975D (with a proforce shaft). The next 10 years was amazing as we hit 460cc, Nike SQ Sumo, the amazing R7 and onwards lineup.

 

Some part of me just thinks we peaked with a 915 D2 so that's probably my pick. Give me a shiny one.

1. G25.  The last great high mass in the low back driver before that Slider "move the weigh forward so everybody can hit 1 great drive and 100 low offline ones" stuff started to take over. I couldn't miss a fw with that thing and it was so easy to launch.

2. G400. Great driver, smaller size but very forgiving. Loved the copper and black. Never had the pleasure of experiencing the G400 max.

 

Most fun:  Cleveland Classic. Titanium, SUPER deep, looked like a Persimmon, sounded like a Persimmon, felt amazing.

I once took a head, put a TX-90 steel shaft in it, and put a GP Victory grip on to make the ultimate "retro" driver.

Callaway Epic Speed.  I have tried a ton before and after and it has been my favorite by far.  Amazing sound, feel, and look at address.  Long and really good on toe strikes too.

Now it's Tour Edge Exotics E722.  Hit it anywhere on the face and the ball is going to be almost as good as a sweet spot strike.  I'm not sure what kind of pixie dust is in it but it's really forgiving, iirc the moi is 5600 with the stock weight.

This, the TE E722. I got it last year at a great price from TE pre owned. It was in excellent shape. The stock shaft was good but put a Pro Launch Blue in SR flex in it and boy what a great fairway finder, even when I put a crappy swing on it.  My previous greatest driver was the TM M2. Never getting rid of that one…

Adams Redline Ti 460 with Fujikura G60 shaft is still the hottest driver I’ve ever hit. I’ve had it since 2005 and it still beats all the new drivers in ball speed by 8-10mph. The only reason I don’t play it anymore is bc I can’t keep it in the fairway like I used to. 285 in the fairway is better than 310 in the trees or water.

Out of the drivers I've gamed I'd say Taylormade R7 Superquad or Ping G400 Max. Hoping to recreate a little of that magic with the 10K but it's got big shoes to fill

For me personally. I have had some amazing driving rounds with callaway mavrik standard at 9 degrees. Im talking maybe 14 15 fairways possibly. No slices no hooks. If anything barely in the rough which i dont mind rough shots mostly. Distance and accuracy. Two best scores ever with it. Not sure anything else has come close.

 

Do you still have the Mavrik??

 

For me it was the Cally FT9-TA followed closely by the SLDR 430.

Titleist Titanium Howitzer 🙂  - Maybe the OG Titanium Driver?  Was good for me for over 10-15 years through my "yute"-years.  

Ping i15 ... first Driver I was ever fit for ... at the big golf store that used to be near the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine (closed down after a couple years).  I was in my mid-late 20's.  The store rep was awesome ... saw me hitting it into their net, then drove me out to the range with a bunch of shafts and spent a good 30 minutes with me putting in different shafts, until we had it going straight.  That was a great experience and it lasted another good 10-15 years.  
Taylormade Stealth 2+ - fit for this at True-Spec North GA (have learned that outdoor fittings are best for me).  Added 20-30 yards over my TS2 and helped me learn to hit a little fade.  I think the Ventus TR Black 6X has helped a lot too.
