Arnold Palmer Invitational 2024

Don't really care about Holiday Inn Express' antics in the rough per se. Seen Scheffler and far too many other guys do it. "Oh, let me see if I should go 3 wood from 150 out. Nah, I'll just take the wedge now that I've matted down all the grass behind my ball." Annoyed me and then I just said whatever cause it's accepted and has been since at least the 80s.

Him gouging an even bigger chunk out of the fairway when he'd just been disadvantaged by landing in a divot was plain #$^hattery. One can only hope he by some miracle lands in his own shovel mark tomorrow and it assures he is out of the running to win.

Not sure if you know this but like every tour pro does what he did to improve their lie. Some use 3 woods and etc and switch it out for another club.

It's a non-issue.

His 2-minute putt routine on the other hand should be a bannable offense.

Is this Patrick Reed in disguise?

It’s very frustrating to hear PGA Tour rules officials say the ball returned to its original spot. It absolutely did not. Now if they want to say that they only knew that based on a zoomed in HD video and that can’t be used to determine if there was a penalty, I can buy that. But the Tour seems to be saying that zoomed in HD video can justify a player not getting penalized, but it can’t bring to light a penalty. Just seems like the PGA Tour is going to great lengths to not penalize players and keep them happy.

Tamping down the grass behind the ball is something that many recreational golfers do, you see it all the time. I'm guilty of it and so is my partner I'm competing against, but since we're both okay with that it doesn't matter. Recreational golfers selectively break rules all the time out of necessity.  How many of you go back to the tee and re-tee after hitting OB in a casual non-tournament round? If every recreational golfer did that you'd be looking at 6-7 hour rounds and probably get kicked off the course.

What Clark did, and the non-call by the rules officials is the dumbing down of tournament golf at the highest level, and turning that game into the equivalent of me (16 hdcp) and my 23 hdcp buddy hacking it up on a Saturday afternoon at the local muni for a cheeseburger and a beer.

I don't like it, but it reflects the larger trend in society where nobody is responsible for their actions. A couple years ago this absolutely would have been called a penalty, but the world is a much softer, more tolerant place now, rules be damned. Guys like Clark don't know any better, they lack respect for the game and feel entitled, that's the generation they were raised in. This ain't your daddy's PGA.

If Wyndham Clark gets to take a breakfast ball off the first tee today I'm gonna be really pissed.

I think it was questionable activity but I'm not sure it was intentional (if the ball moved,  it was for the worse), and I'm not sure if it was noticeable unaided by cameras.

The positive result here is that players are now on notice to be extra diligent in these situations.

I'll gladly take courses with actual rough even if it means players occasionally getting caught in questionable situations over the typical tour course where bad lies don't exist.

Maybe the moving of the ball wasn't intentional, but improving the lie by tamping down the rough in back of the ball absolutely was. Why else would you do that? If you want to test the ground conditions you do that away from the ball, everybody knows that.

I understand that but it's a gay  area that is allowed by rule to a point,  commonplace/accepted practice to a point,  and a very difficult thing to police or define a violation. See Hideki just recently.

I also don't find testing the ground elsewhere useful. Obviously you take practice swings away from the ball but probing the ground there when I'm hitting here isn't helpful, too me anyway.

The end result of all of this could be we're not going to be seeing those close up shots during the coverage anymore.  Which is unfortunate for the viewer.  But if no one sees it there's no controversy.

Amazing they couldn't get the ruling right, even with the replay.  I thought this was the PGA Tour, not the NFL.

This one was so botched they really need to revisit it this morning.

Or they can just ignore all the armchair experts and get on with the good play. Some good stuff already this morning.  Great way to enjoy my first cuppa joe.

The right thing to do would have been to call a penalty on yourself either in the moment or in retrospect after seeing it and reflection, if necessary.

It doesn't matter when it happens so long as it's voluntary and during the pendency.

If he comes out tomorrow before his round and says, "look I thought about it and it bothered me and I'd rather be safe than sorry and take the penalty," I think we'd all be ok w that.

In that case, wouldn’t he be disqualified if he signed for an incorrect score?

Folks, the ball moved because of his actions.  Scummy.  If you would like to test the lie, do it away from the ball.

I think everyone -5 and better are alive to win today. Lowry is less likely than Scheffler to make huge numbers I think. I see a couple Scheffler bogeys if he has to putt for par.

Regarding Lowry I find it amazing the way he rotates his torso through impact. It seems really notable on some shots more so than on others. Not sure if he is try to produce a draw or flight it down with this move. Just impressive how the big guy can move.

I've always wondered if he did the whole fitness thing like most of them, if he'd be better or it's ruin his swing at least temporarily.

Could @JetSpeed79 beat Sepp Straka & Jake Knapp at Bay Hill?

Sepp and Knapp would ppulverize me.

I know we’ve all been wondering what we would shoot on this course in these conditions. I think my score would be gnarly (technical term).

But I’d still treat the course better than Wyndham.
