Don’t dislike/root against the guy. To me he’s just MEH. Just another cookie cutter pro. When it was apparent he was gonna win @ LACC, you could almost feel the oxygen being sucked out of the air. There was a lot of buzz/energy for Rory or Rickie taking it.

Yep. He doesn't putt badly, but he should really have way more easy birdie putts than he does with the number of wedge approaches he leaves himself

Scottie actually switched to a Spider last year (no insert model), then switched back to the blade before this switch.

It's likely Scottie is just experiencing "new putter syndrome" where the new putter is different to what he is used to, and so is playing more by "feel" and that's overcoming whatever mental/physical errors he had ingrained in his old putter. Odds are he will regress to where he was before absent putting technique/brain changes.

Yeah, I remember that and the insert. Was a bit frustrating seeing him go straight back after one event then. Maybe it sticks better now that it seems to be working.

The problem is his caddy is as clueless as he is and I’m a huge Rory fan. Unfortunately the disappointment is getting to be a bit much.

Exactly what I’ve been saying. His proximity is his biggest issue. He would have beat Cam at the old course had he left himself some makeable birdie putts.

I have a feeling Rory just loves practicing with the driver and probably just doesn’t put in the time with the short irons

He has allegedly practiced and taken lessons as well, may be worth trying if the mallet doesn't fix things.

I really like Datagolf for these visuals, and it's clear where the glaring hole for McIlroy is there, especially when to zoom in:



Rory straight up misses the green 16% of the time from 50-100y. Compare that to Scheffler (which isn't super fair currently) or someone like Homa (more fair)





And it becomes clear where the weakness is. The T66 at Pebble Beach with its tiny greens immediately after a win, with +0.92 strokes gained off the tee but -1.75 strokes gained approach, sums it up pretty clearly.

Yeah, well I practice putting for 1-2 hours 3 or 4 times per week, and that’s the problem with switching to a mallet, it's just not as much fun on the practice green as the blade. I get bored quickly, probably because it's easier. 🤪

Only problem is he's always so calm while destroying people's dreams. Tiger spewed fire and ate your young as he took your life apart. SS kind of just Eeyores his way from tee box to tee box, crushing everyone beneath his tap dancing cleats. 

 

Doesn't really make for must see TV.
