I think he was trying to understand where the bottom was so he could adjust his approach angle and not hit too high on the clubface or slide underneath it.

He was, but that doesn’t justify the ball moving like that if it didn’t return to its original location

Just giving my opinion on his intent, not the permissibility of it.

Just watch the video that everyone is posting. Put your cursor on the top of the ball before Clark "grounds" his club. See where your cursor is when he is done. The ball drops down 1/8" of an inch. Not sure if that helped or hurt him, but the ball moved to a different spot.

That's the thing when I watch it, he wasn't just grounding it behind the ball, it looked like he went *under* the ball to me. But I am not a rules official nor do I play one on TV.

I cast that video to a large monitor. That ball definitely moved and did not settle back into the original position.

He flat out cheated. He did more than just lightly rest the club behind the ball, he mashy mashied it a couple of times.

Per the rules:

A player is allowed to lightly ground the club right in front of or behind the ball, which means just setting it down enough to support its weight. If that’s all a player’s doing, even if it creates an improvement to the lie there is no penalty — see Rule 8.1b. If, however, a player goes beyond that (say, from light tapping to mush-mush-mushing) and creates an improvement, under Rule 8.1(a) it’s the general penalty of two strokes in stroke play and loss of hole in match play.

I don't think that's exactly what the rule says, but I'm open to clarification. The rule says you can lightly ground your club "even if doing so improves the conditions affecting your stroke," but the ball is not a condition affecting your stroke like the grass around the ball is.

Straight from the R&A.  IMO, it's the pressing down part that these guys routinly cheat on.  Scheffler in particular has been shown to smash his wedges down behind the ball multiple times on zoomed in TV coverage, laying the grass over at a 45* angle.

(4) Ground the club lightly right in front of or right behind the ball. “Ground the club lightly” means allowing the weight of the club to be supported by the grass, soil, sand or other material on or above the ground surface. But this does not allow:

  • Pressing the club on the ground, or
  • When a ball is in a bunker, touching the sand right in front of or right behind the ball (see Rule 12.2b(1)).

Between the grounding incident, hacking up the fairway in anger, and this 2:15 putt, Wyndham sure had himself an annoying day.

He’s definitely lost quite a bit of the reg crowd here today. He needs to either use a LAB broomstick, or switch drivers a few times to get them back.
