Is Chris DiMarco Completely delusional?

Dimarco is a little delusional.  Those guys on the Champions tour are on the twilight of their careers and far from their prime. If LIV existed 20 years ago, they would love to snatch up Dimarco but let's face it, the big money goes to those who are in the prime of their careers.

Would you rather pay your hard earned to see Wayne Greztky in the 1984 Stanley Cup Finals or him in some old timer's game in 2024?

Don't compare hockey with golf lol.

I saw he and his son play recently at a private club here in Tampa, it is an ultra-conservative place where most of the members are older and very wealthy.  I'm not surprised that he wants the benefits of LIV owning that tour but I am surprised he said something publicly, can't see it going over well with his fellow members at Avila.  I have mentioned on here before a couple of times that as of last year, LIV expressed interest in buying the LPGA but I did not hear them mention anything about the Champions tour

Champions Tour produced nearly 20 millionaires last year. Nearly 50 guys made north of $500k. The champions tour average was over $330k. That is nearly $14k per week on average. That's equivalent to a $715k annual salary.

Chris made $over $200k last year. He was 67th on the money list. He should thank his lucky stars every single night that he plays the only sport in the world with an active tour for retired players. He should say a small prayer every night that the folks at SSG and potentially the PIF don't see that entire tour as an easy opportunity for cost savings.

Some are still getting endorsement money as well.

Yes, Chris DiMarco is delusional, and has been for as long as I have known he exists.

I was young and immature and have become a far more aware poster since.

Yet, you were in the right zone, then, and it still applies.  Chipmunk hacker farts, like their games, are loud, least where I am from. 🙂

If companies think that is a good investment,  bless them. There certainly is a demographic there worth targeting. Tour Edge pretty much focuses entirely on the senior segment. There are obviously a lot of financial, insurance, health related services that should be pitched by Bernhard Langer not Ludvig Aberg. Wilfred Brimley warns us about the threats of diabetes, not some jacked and tan Marvel superhero 😉

But these guys have to know or at least understand that their entire tour is primarily subsidized by the main tour. I really doubt it is a self sustaining, profitable enterprise.

The question is whether or not it is in the best interest of the tour? Would the tour be better off investing that money and giving that TV time to the KFT tour? I think it makes a lot more sense to invest in the stars of tomorrow than it does in the stars of the past.

I said this earlier, it's probably in the new media deal. Live content is a valuable commodity even if it is the Champ tour. Some big names have played the Champ tour and the PGAT is hoping another big name plays it soon.

I recall a really good comment about radio and "new music."  Someone had said "all my friends want to hear new music, why do they play ACDC/U2/Pearl Jam all the time?"  And the response was, because either your friends are lying, or they like unpopular crap.  If people wanted to watch the KFT, they would be watching it.  People don't care about the "stars of tomorrow", no matter how hard marketing tries to play that angle up.  They care about the stars.  Period.  It's why Palmer and Nicklaus still had some of the largest galleries at majors even when they had no hope of making the cut.  At least in golf it's like that.

PIF's idea of cost savings was to give an ev company that spends 700mill a quarter to produce 1 car model, an injection of a 1bill dollars through one of its subsidiary's.

Good points. But that begs two questions...

1. How much is Tiger really going to play? He said he was going to play once a month in 2024. He hasn't come close. Sure a cart will make things easier but he's not playing any where close to a full schedule.

2. Live content is valuable. Is the tour better off allocating those viewing windows to KFT events or Champions Tour events?

If there wasn't it would have disappeared on its own.

Unless the PGA Tour is propping it up. I am curious if PGA Tour Champions just became an independent tour how it would fare? Or if it was broadcast on Fox Sports instead of golf channel. Maybe I am in the minority but I would rather watch the future of golf rather than the past. Also, by elevating the KFT (more money for purses, more tv exposure) I would think you would be benefitting your pipeline for future tour stars. Just my "misguided" thoughts.

it's not just alumni that watch college sports. People attend minor league baseball games. People watch the NBA development league.

And with all due respect to Steve Stricker who's an exceptionally talented golfer. He's not Jack and Arnie. Nobody is setting their DVR or building their weekend around watching Chris DiMarco or Stephen Ames. The Champions Tour is not a Hall of Fame Tour full of nothing but stars. For every Ernie Els or Paddy Harrington, there are a half dozen Jerry Kelly's or Charlie Wii's. Fine golfers but those dudes aren't bringing an audience searching for nostalgia.

Yes. You can see the full list of Junior champs here.

Yes, currently Tiger and Bobby Jones have the most USGA trophies at 9. Tiger will become the first man to win the junior am, am, us open, and senior open when he does and setting the new record at 10. Id say that's plenty motivating.

A lot of folks don’t seem to understand where the money for purses comes from. Who is shelling out a significant amount of money for a champions tour event? Does the Champions tour get more eyeballs on it than the LPGA?

Probably could if it were marketed better.  And if it got more eyeballs it would probably raise purses, which may accidentally attract the better players. Sort of cyclical maybe?

Don't get me wrong, I like watching the Champions Tour, but I have always felt the Champions Tour is nothing really but an exhibition, a chance to see the great players of years past.  People will pay some for that.   Other than golf nuts like WRXers, nobody really wants to see a bunch of ex club pros fighting it out for the coveted Greater Fort Doge Invitational Championship, presented by Viagra....

I walked a course and watched Tom Watson.  Until LIV it was one of the better spots to see major champions all on the course at the same time.

I'd have a hard time believing it does. Speaking for me personally, the only time I've watched the old guys tour is when Golf Channel's coverage of the PGA tour switches to NBC,CBS, etc. and they run straight into the Champions tour. Sometimes I'll get busy doing something else before I realize they've switched, and catch a minute or two.

I just listened to the pod and was prepared to dislike CD based on the above (and the fact that I was never a fan of his back in the day), but I thought it was an enjoyable conversation.  Yes wishful thinking about Senior Tour purses, but that was a very small part of the pod.
