NFL champions tour would be wild. I'm not talking flag either, get them out there fully suited. Geriatric Ray Lewis lighting up Brett Favre would be must see TV

Who would you get to play?  A lot of those guys are so beat up that they can hardly walk, let alone run.  There is a reason they peak at 28 and can't play at 33.

This is the DiMarco interview.

Champions Tour total prize:

2007 - $55.2 million

2008 - $51.4 million

2010 - $51.5 million

2024 - $67 million

Screen Shot 2024-03-28 at 7.33.11 pm.png

Champ Tour is a second PGAT career. The numbers say that ....."Somebody is watching"

PGAT has a record 52 sponsors with plenty of companies waiting in the wings.

Perhaps this isn't a totally fair or "apples-to-apples" comparison, but this comment from DiMarco reminds me of when members of the US women's soccer team demanded equal pay to the men's team despite the fact that there just isn't the same level of interest to drive the revenues. I get it, if it was based on merit, I'm sure a lot of the Champions Tour guys work their butts off just like PGA Tour guys do, especially since many of them were on the Tour at one point. But the interest isn't the same. I'm pretty sure the women's team actually won their case, but that was based on gender equality laws and not on age.

It's true that the Champions Tour guys still play golf at an elite level, but his grievance should be directed at whoever is in charge of marketing them. Branding matters. The PGAT's sponsors are mostly household names like BMW, Honda, Wells Fargo, etc., brands that everyone knows and that we're used to seeing in ads. Sorry, but when you're going to brand your events as the "Cologuard Classic" or even the "KitchenAid Senior PGA," you're shooting yourself in the foot. The Champions Tour's sponsors make many tournaments sound like mini-tour stops. Not sure how feasible it would be, but if you got equipment companies like Titleist or TaylorMade to sponsor some of these events and in exchange highlight the players in the field using their products, it would probably come as a breath of fresh air. It just feels like half of their events are nameless outside of the brand stamped on it and change names/venues too regularly. Sure, the PGAT has a few of these like the Rocket Mortgage and the 3M Open, but they are closer to the exception than the rule.

I just listened to the pod and was prepared to dislike CD based on the above (and the fact that I was never a fan of his back in the day), but I thought it was an enjoyable conversation.  Yes wishful thinking about Senior Tour purses, but that was a very small part of the pod.

Totally agree, I listened to it before this "story" came out though. Didn't even think twice about his comments.  Thought it was a good candid convo as per usual on their pod. Looking at the purse growth, seems to make a fair point.  I would say Champ tour is prob more competitive then it has ever been.

Does anyone else feel these so called "stories/articles" regarding pods, social media posts, or trolling are always blown up to get clicks?

Everyone says try harder to CD, I say try harder to write an actual article or get an actual interview.  This useless cherry pick out of context garbage is one of the many things wrong with Media coverage these days.

Imagine someone asking to make more money for doing what they do? I’m appalled.

One must take Chris Dimarco's statements with a grain of salt. He has to know that the PGAT Champions is a branch of the PGAT. He's just lobbying for more dollars when the Alliance happens. Can't blame him for that. 🤣

So DiMarco was tied with Tiger at the top after 72 holes in a major then.  That isn't exactly something to just sneeze at.

Your reading comprehension is, again, lacking.

I said it was perfect timing for GC to show that particular replay at THIS particular time. You know, capitalizing on the DiMarco buzz that was  going around yesterday.

I said absolutely nothing about DiMarco's  game. He was a helluva player. I "sneezed" at absolutely nothing.

Page Spiranac jumped into the fray declaring CD make $22 mill on the course over his career and that didn't count sponsor money.   Hmmm..... ain't enough I guess.

He's both. He made comments about how "the money's there." It wasn't. They had to bleed the reserves dry to create the elevated events and the new design isn't even sustainable. Without the recent infusion and the restructuring to come the money isn't there for paying these oversized purses. PIF's "model" only works because they literally don't care about ROI.

He also discussed talking to McDowell about mentioning to Monahan that he was struggling to keep his card and meanwhile PIF's league was offering him 8 figures. Sorry you're not playing well enough to be competitive, but that's no different than anywhere else in the real career world. Citing that as proof that guys had "no choice" at all levels but to go over is less than a weak argument and also does nothing to show that "the money's there." Players like Poulter & friends were simply lucky af to have rich guys in the mood to give them a windfall.

He also whined about how quickly players keep surpassing his career earnings. Boo hoo. They overtake him just like he overtook the people from Jack's heyday. If he didn't do smart things with it or didn't make as much as the guys who were better, that's life.

His tone the entire time isn't laid back like some said, it's entitled & matter of fact when he isn't speaking facts or twists them to suit what he wants. He's lucky that the PGA does a good enough job getting sponsors to keep Champions alive, though I any gratitude he showed is less than enthusiastic. He's at least as bad as the PGA guys doing the same kind of crying.

It would have been nice if the hosts had perhaps challenged him on his opinions. Instead they acted like barking seals.

Yes. DiMarco was a tough competitor. Had/has a great fade that was so reliable for years. During the Masters against Tiger most people were thinking this is his chance. But he ran into the jaws of, well, you know, the Tiger. Lol.

Big T imo will just play the majors and especially Senior US Open and THE Open.  But hey that’s fine by me.  Any chance to see him play is great.  As far as DiMarco no shame in wanting or asking for more money albeit it is delusional.

A lot of folks don’t seem to understand where the money for purses comes from. Who is shelling out a significant amount of money for a champions tour event? Does the Champions tour get more eyeballs on it than the LPGA?

theres no way you are tuning into Bernhardt Langert and Ernie Els tee it up over Charley Hull and Nelly Korda! not just for their looks but the women swing the club so much more smoothly. something us amateurs should really try to immulate.

Doesn’t matter what the purse is when you are only 3 spots from being DFL. Or maybe that is why he wants a LIV type arrangement. Guaranteed money when he knows he can’t compete week in and week out.

Yup. He sounded like he's looking for someone to give him cash for doing nothing.

He was also wrong about the PGAT and "they had the money"... what a tool.

I understand what DiMarco is saying, I just don’t know why he’s saying it, they’re off the cuff musings ……no thought before speaking.

Most everyone would “like more money”, but coming up with non sensical comments, ignoring the realities of how things work is just plain illogical, and irresponsible when talking to the media.  Doesn’t look good on him.

It’s like the weather, everyone complains about it, but no one does anything about it.

He was saying it tongue in cheek if you listened to the interview.  Also joked that he's hoping they start a LIV Champions Tour.
