Gamble on Sub70?

Ripken08

Recommended Posts

I have narrowed it down to either Sub70 659 CBs or TCs or Mizuno 243/245.  I also want to try a set with the SF i95s I was fit for last fall.  Of course they are about the highest upcharge stock graphites for all companys.  I am really tempted by Sub70s ($1100 for 5-G w/i95s) vs $1500 for comparable Mizunos.  Can save $400, BUT the resale on Sub70s are horrendous if I don't like them.  Or do I just take that $1100 and put it towards the Mizunos???

Anyone gambled on Sub70 and they ended up kicking out your tried and true OEM?

I ended up switching to New Level after testing out both Sub 70 and New Level.  If I recall, you are able to get them to send you the clubs as a rental of sorts.  New Level is different as you buy the 7 iron.

Either way... I was impressed with both companies but ended up going New Level (The Sub 70 TC was not out yet).

I don't see a scenario where I would ever go back to the bigger brands for irons.  Sub 70, New Level, Haywood, etc... all have great reviews.

I am getting back into playing now that my kids are getting a bit older...  I was about a 2 handicap in the old days...  Played Mizuno's.  Loved them, but, not any more than I love my current New Level's.

I hope this helps.  The biggest hurdle for me was coming to terms with it all mentally...  not the feel or performance.

My n=1 experience with Sub70 is positive.  Having said that, I've gone through way more irons sets than any sane person should ... so take this with a grain of salt.

I went through several fitting last year and the results were between R and S flex, depending on the OEM.  My last fitting was Mizuno, they landed on a specific S flex shaft, and I happened to find a set of Sub70's in the exact specs I needed on the auction site.  So ... instead of spending $1400 for Mizuno's I figured I'd spend $500 on the Sub70's.  They felt great and performed as good as anything I've had in my bag in the 40+ years I've been playing.  But, and this is a bit but, after a couple rounds I just couldn't get the S flex shafts to perform after about hole #14.  It felt like I had to force my swing and really work hard to get them to perform.

The clubs were so nice that when I found a very similar set in an R flex with my specs I bought those and sold the S flex.  Both sets were the 649MB irons.  They are every bit as nice as any other blades I played in the past.

The key thing is getting fit, being comfortable with the results, and who is doing the assembly.

When I was fit, they used the older Mizuno shaft optimizer that did not do lie angle or ball fitting.  I'm sure all the available newer shafts weren't on it either, like MMTs.  If I would go from SF i95s to MMT 85 or 90s, the Mizunos and Sub70s would be basically exactly the same price with my Mizuno discount I'm getting.

I wouldn't personally worry about resale and would go with the Sub70s.  But if you like to flip irons often then you'd need to think about resale on the Mizuno taking into account the extra $400 you paid for them.  Resale just isn't in my equation when I buy golf clubs and to be honest, I usually buy high and sell low, pretty much always lose money so I just buy what I want and move forward.

I have been very happy with my Sub 70 purchases. They also have I think it’s six week return policy so if you play them and don’t like them it’s not a big deal to return them and get your money back. They are a great company to work with.

I tested sub 70 (639CB) against Mizuno (MMC), Cobra (MIM Tour), Callaway (Apex Pro), and Taylormade (P770) irons and also against other DTCs like New Level and Ben Hogan and I liked the Sub 70s the second most. I ended up buying Ben Hogan PTxPros but the Sub 70s were 2nd in my book. Your mileage may vary but I don't really know what the Major OEMs offer that is worth the extra money beyond convenience.

I'd try sub70. They have a 60 day no questions asked return policy and you have nothing to lose

I just ordered 2 wedges from them and after spending the day with them, I really like and really feel no different than the Clevelands they replaced.  Talk to them and I’m sure you will have enough comfort in making a decision.

I’d be shocked if you can buy new clubs for $1100 and use them for 2 months and return them for a full refund??? If you can it would be a no-brainer. Maybe this is if you go there and get fit?

if you are concerned about resale or finances, I’d with the Sub 70. Even though the resale will be less they are $400 cheaper and even with the Mizuno increase of resale value, that won’t make up a $400 difference.

I don’t really consider resale when I buy clubs. I want to play what I want to play, and when/if it comes time to sell them, I get what I get. No big deal, and it’s not a factor in the initial purchase….so my advice for what it’s worth is get what you want to play and don’t worry about resale.

My experience with Sub70 was tremendous. I’m an adaptive player and have very unique specs. Spent quite some time with Jason on the phone working out options, then another couple calls with the builder. I had been fit elsewhere in person but ran into a lengthy delay in getting the clubs built so I went to Sub70. They went above and beyond anything I expected on a seriously custom build, and they are still in my bag.

Sub70 may be the most underrated company in golf. Everything I have bought for myself and my brother has been top notch.  I did use the return policy on a putter because the toe hang was actually heel hand which I have never seen or heard of before. Putter was amazing in shape, looks, feel, etc just pulled every putt and they took it back no problems.

FW's, Hybrids, and wedges are amazing!

I played 659CB much of last year, they are really attractive clubs and feel nice. Plus Sub70 will give you a lot of options for finish (i had raw)

They are a pretty basic forged CB head and will perform as you think, consistent, nice feeling etc. Not as "techy" as something like a T150

One word of caution is that they have more offset than most forged CB. The offset spec may not reveal as much, but at address you do notice. Not a huge thing for me but a lot of people who've owned 659s have said that

Leading edge is also very sharp looking

But they are perfectly good clubs

Perfectly said. I've never once worried about resale value on any clubs I've ever purchased. And I've been through a boatload of clubs in my lifetime.
