Don't move.

Recommended Posts

I think I kind of get the one direction stuff.

If you imagine the bicycle movement he's doing with his hands.  If you have your right hand in front and the left hand behind.  And pull away from you.  Then eventually the right hand gets back in front.  You never make a movement or intent directed at getting your hand back in front, as your pulling back one direction, but it ends up back there.

You can do the same with a club in your hand and the golf ball.  If you pull back away from the ball and try to keep going that direction, you'll eventually get back to getting the club on the ball without the intent of doing so.  Similar idea of casting behind you.  Instead of moving the club back towards the ball, you continue the direction behind you and eventually it gets back to the ball anyway.

I think it ties together with other things being taught.  It seemed somewhat similar to me, with what Padraig teaches with hip and shoulder movement.  Everything is away from the ball.  No intent to move your body toward the ball.  One direction can be just that.  Always have the intent of moving away.  Again it's intent, as if you move your trail side away, the lead side will still move closer to the ball.

With that being said.  He could definitely find a way to make it less confusing and more clear.

As far as I can tell the golf swing is one movement towards the target.  When you turn your hips in the backswing you move weight towards the target.  In the backswing you move the club head closer to the target than at address.  The entire downswing path is closer to the target than the backswing.

Actually the golf swing is best viewed as one discrete cycle of a combinatory oscillation or planar rotation and reversal of same (but of greater magnitude)  in the three planes in which a person can move.

The original video is too far fetched to many of us, it sounds like an encrypted prophet’s revelation not for the uninitiated. I’m not questioning the coach but his comm skills.

However, there’s a concept underlying which I believe is connected to the flowing motion of the golf swing. And this is the very point that makes swing coaching a mistery to me. Everybody is taught the mechanics of the swing but almost not teacher ever discusses with new students, especially adults, the necessity of a fluid motion back and forth.  Same happens with adults learning to play tennis.

A agree with the idea that all the motion in golf is meant to go through and forward. Any very good player will move this way. A not so good player will take time and effort pulling the club back before swinging through.

A few years ago I used to play with this guy who had taken up the game recently. Most of his days he was off so after one quick niner I told him let’s go hit a few balls. I never give advice but this is a close friend; I simply told him to go back and forth as naturally as he could, no thoughts, no conscious effort at all. After a dozen ball he began striking the ball pure with a flowing motion and he kept at it for the rest of the balls. He didn’t know he could hit the ball that way.

A caveat: for us am players achieving this everytime we play is very hard. You’ll see kids or players who have taken up the game at a young age doing this more often. But knowing and searching for this as a priority, especially when you’re playing, will make the game way more efficient and attractive.

There are some useful things to get from these concepts....certainly in terms of synchronization of the different parts....if you already have a good golf swing.

(...and these are going to be "feels" related because the physics, as described, is pretty much wrong.)

To me he is saying pretty much what Earnest Jones said 100 years ago.  The idea works if as you mentioned the person has reasonable swing mechanics.  If there is some fundamental error in movement then instruction of some sort is required.  That is what I believe Earnest was really good at and I would think Martin is also.  They spot the problem and give the student feels or movements until the problem goes away.  At any rate that's my idea on why this stuff rarely works for the average golfer reading a book or watching a video.

I think his explanation works better if your not talking about the hands but talking how the shoulder sockets work. They circle from from flex to extension and vice versa,  each are opposed but same directionally. Lead moves to flex and then back to full extension, trail to extension back to flex. It creates that motion with handle he's alluding to and keeps the window of arm triangle pointed down between inside target line & body, but always ahead of club both ways. Always blows me away what the arm triangle looks like on great swings at or approaching P6. I think that tumbling is in part how they do it.
