The Par 5 ..... fifth hole is a three-shoter all day long. Going for it in 2 is a recipe for disaster. I'm not a fan of Pinehurst #2 golf.

I disagree. Golf needs more tough par 5s. These guys are so good that I think it's great to have some true risk-reward in going for it in two. It's practically a given most weeks considering 75% of the field can reach every par 5 on a mediocre drive that isn't behind a tree or forced to lay up. It's nice to see guys actually have to consider leaving themselves a wedge even if they're in decent position.

I was going to start a separate thread on this--modern architects (incl. the remodelers) seem VERY reluctant to dial up the length of par 5's, since they've done so with zero restraint on the par 4's.  Instead of moving the tee back 50 yards or more and maybe reworking the fairway, they just leave it as it and reclassify it as a par 4.  For the longer ones they seem highly averse to cranking the yardage close to 700 yards.  Yeah yeah it was Ben Hogan IIRC who once said he disliked par 5's where you only start to play golf on the third shot, but I can think of many ways to still make a behemoth like that interesting and not just two no-brainers to get within wedge range.

 

[I'll give Augusta props for doing so with all their par 5's, note, but 2 still needs some help and they may have overdone it with 15]
