Hit into on purpose.

Recommended Posts

I am posting this under etiquette. We were on a short par 4 where the cart path runs directly behind the green. We were parked behind the green and had just finished putting out. Slow pace of play that day. I sensed that the group behind us was getting antsy and was going to hit before we vacated.  The pin was all of the way back so we were only ten yards behind the pin.  Sure enough, as we climb into the cart, a guy hits the ball and it lands directly on top of one of our carts, missing my playing partner by about a foot.

I told everyone to go to the next tee box and I would handle it. I stayed until they pulled up and asked them why they had hit before we left. The guy said "You were playing too slowly and I did not want to wait."

My question is this: How would YOU have handled it at that point?

I would let these idiots go ahead of me. I would not want them behind me. It might happen again. Also, not sure I would have confronted them. If they are stupid enough to hit into you, who knows what else they might do. Possibly call the pro shop. Handling these kind of situations is part of their job.

I generally give the first offense a pass.  Tee their ball up.  The second time, I'm hitting it back.  Hard.  Have only done that once in 40+ years of playing.

If its clearly unintentional , I tee their ball up. If it seems intentional or gross negligence, im calling the pro shop. If someone hits the cart I'm in and says its because Im playing too slow... Im going scorched earth on the pro shop until they get kicked off the course or have serious repercussions ( if its private).

Report to pro shop and let them handle it.  Too many people packing these days!

My question is this: How would YOU have handled it at that point?

You stayed behind and told your group you'd handle?

On a serious note, first off, his ball would be gone.  Second, the pro shop would be informed and he’d be removed, particularly if it’s a private club.  Everything else that transpired would depend upon the size of the dude who did it and what his reaction was to his ball disappearing into the weeds.  Actually, in my normal foursome, it wouldn’t be up to me.  My Canadian hockey buddy would have to be talked down from putting the guy in the hospital.

How you handled it is probably the dumbest way you could have unless you know you could take all 4 on.   They're clearly unhinged and not thinking if they're willing to hit into you.  People these days are crazy.

Let the pro shop handle it...if you felt the need to talk them at least don't send off your backup to next hole.  I'll get mouthy with idiots, but I always have a guy with me and as an ex hockey player I know I can knock you out in one swing.

So the guy basically admitted to hitting into you on purpose. He is obviously adult enough to know the potential dangers. I would have just called the pro shop as others have stated to have them deal with it.  It's just not worth it with some people these days. Heck, you may kick his tail in a fight, but people can't even take a well deserved butt kicking anymore without having to press charges to save face.

Haha, takes me back to the glory days of Iowa wrestling 30-40 years ago - the number of idiots that thought picking a fight with a wrestler in a bar was a good idea - then they found out after the fact neither the bar nor the police had any sympathy.  The Brands boys lived to finish fights whenever they traveled, haha.

Could be he wanted to make a statement by hitting the green.

Too many golfers get mad at the group in front of them, without verifying who the slow group is.

It absolutely amazes me how many people I see hit into the green before carts pull away.

They may well be careless but I think they simply lack common sense. It's just stupid to do that.

Had a father son and wives (we learned later) hit into us 4 times last Saturday.

On 17, ball landed on the green a foot from one of us. We all turned around and gave them the figure and the throat slash. We were sick of it.

My wife and I waited for them. waited on the bank, above the green and the son came by to give us his stupid explanation. Then the father. The same BS "we didn't think we could hit it that far, blah, blah, blah"

The two of us are normally very calm, early 70's, non practicing black belts, with a piece of iron in our hands. Luckily they were not armed nor did our switchs turn on.

It was the hill to die on.

Yup, we are nuts

Yep. Had this in my round just this past Sunday. First three holes go back and forth with full visibility. We're walking up to the green on 1 to see the group in front of us still teeing off while the group in front of them is already on the #3 green. (Both are par 3's). Figure "uh oh, it's gonna be a long day if this group is already that far behind." By #8, the next time I could really see what was going on with the group in front of them, I could see them from the #7 green being forced to wait to tee off on #8 because the group in front of them hadn't cleared yet. So they caught up. Not that I'm one to hit into a group, but it certainly made me realize that my earlier impression that they were going to be a slow group wasn't warranted.

Yeah, I feel the first offense is usually a pass (not in the OP's scenario though, that's clearly intentional). We had a round where it happened twice and my playing partner rather than teeing it up just stomped the ball into the fairway to send a message.

That group apologized afterwards. I'm sure it helped that three of the four of us in that foursome looked like people they did NOT want to mess with lol...

But that was similar to the situation above. We weren't playing slow. We were being held up on every tee and every approach by the group in front of us, who was held up by the group in front of them, so on and so forth. It's a crowded weekend morning of public course golf. What are ya gonna do?

I'm not calm and smart enough in these situations to think like this.  And I don't like to see bad behavior rewarded.

I joined up with some crazy guys as a single.  These guys smoked the ball about 300. It's a beginners course and a guy on the adjacent hole sliced into our fairway.  The guy is standing around in our fairway about 150 from our tee a bit lost and not knowing what to do and these guys decided to hit.   They smoked it way over this poor guy's head but I wasn't going to hit until he moved.  People are unpredictable.
