New Club Regrets

Bought an Adams 3H sight-unseen to fill a perceived distance gap.

I'm better off picking up the ball and throwing it instead of hitting it with that club. Just totally incapable of hitting it. At least it wasn't expensive.

If I have learned one thing (about myself). That is I never even consider buying a golf club (s) unless I hit it on the range and play with it a couple times. Not saying indoor things are wrong, rigged, false, but they are not the real deal to me. Lucky, the golf store I shop with has demos you can take out for a day or two. Pay for the club, return it and get your money back. Also, have a life long friend who is a PGA teaching pro. So, when a club is not good for me it's either I did not listen to good advice or there's something wrong with the indian's swing. Still, there are some arrows in the basement that don't work. Hmmmmm?
OP here. I'm with you 99.9%. I take the same approach almost always. But that 0.1% was the topic of this thread. I put too much faith in the fitting and left no opportunity to verify the fit by hitting the club another day. Almost every other club I've purchased was hit multiple times over a period of at least 2 weeks.

Ping I20 and Mizie JPX 825 Pro Irons. Despite trackman swearing up and down I'm a digger when doing fittings, I'm not on the course and neither worked out.

Nike Machspeed JDM driver. Cracked after 4 swings and Nike called it an out of area purchase and wouldn't warranty it.

Odyssey Tour Black #8. Good style for me but I can't put without a sightline. No idea what I was thinking that day.

RBZ 3 wood: great off the tee, bad off the fairway. Cleveland's new 588 wedge: saying it is harsh is being kind.
Man I think the 588 feels great. IMO the best wedges I've owned and I've hit a lot of wedges. Just shows how much feel is such a personal thing.

Titleist Ultralight stand bag 2012. Looks cool, eggplant grey with orange trim, and felt really great on my back in the store. Bought it and brought it home to load up the clubs. Since there's only 2 compartments, all the clubs in the lower compartment stick out all over the place cuz the bottom of the bag slants up there when you tip it forward to displace the legs. Clubs hanging up all over the place, looks like half my clubs are trying to run away. Horrid awful bag and can't take it back cuz it's softwoods. GD I wanna burn this thing so bad....

Sorry I know its not a club but just had to vent.

Every 3 wood I've ever purchased.
Me too.

I have a very shallow angle of attack so I have the same problem. I carry a 5 wood. Problem solved

910Fd is a bomber. I never found a 3 wood I liked until this one; well that and the TM V-steels. Both great options imo. Got the 910 set to 16.5* rather than 15*, so more like a 4 wood, but it works wonders. Holy launch! Holy far!

I known a few guys who've said that about the RBZ 3wood....I luv mine off deck or T but I did go with the 14.5* over the 13*....

A Cleveland VAS set I bought and sold the same week back in the late 90s. I was new to the sport and didn't know what I was getting into but just knew the name was good. I quickly started getting lessons from a pro and got fitted for oversized progressive cast CB (Tour Edge Comp 950) as my started set nearly fifteen years ago.

 • 5 months later...

I can't think of a club or set of irons I've bought that I've flat out regretted. But then again I'm pretty frugal when it comes to golf clubs. They are usually either last years models, or slightly used, on sale, and with a coupon,,lol!

But the bottom line is regardless of what club it is, if it doesn't have the exact specs I'm looking for it just doesn't get bought!!!!

I was in Golf Galaxy waiting for the snow to melt a few weeks back and a guy comes in and try's out three Drivers in about 10-15 minutes in the hitting bay and drops $400 on the one that he hit the farthest(and also the wildest)with! The sales guy either didn't have a clue or just didn't care because the guy was motivated to buy and he could sense an easy sell. I don't know if the guy regrets it but I would imagine that's the kind of scenario that would produce a substantial amount of regret.

R11 when it first came out, tried 3 different shafts in it along with more wieght combinations that I care to remember. Just never got confortable with it had it for a maybe 2 months and sold it and bought a Burner Superfast 2.0 TP and had that in the bag for the last 2 season till the upgrade to the X Hot Pro this year.

Well not regretting yet. But have been gaming a Nike SQ with their stock diamana xstiff(I know, probably not true x flex) a good shot is a draw, bad is a small push. But just bought a G20 with the tfc tour xstiff shaft, only hit about 6 times on 9 holes. And it is going more right with a fade.

Will need to put in some range time, and if I keep struggling, I will go get a properly fitted shaft before giving up all together on the G20

1. TaylorMade Burner 2.0 irons - Hated almost everything about them
2. Cleveland cg7 tour irons (red) - Nothing ever felt right with these irons, it may have been the shafts but I don't remember.

JPX 800 Pros. I guess I really don't REGRET the purchase since my ball striking has really improved gaming those and it allowed me to realize the quality and feel of Mizuno irons. The reason I'm hitting myself is that it's only been 2 years and I want to trade them in for MPs. I'm confident my game will continue to improve every year and it just makes sense to make the move to the MP line. I was in my local store yesterday and looking down at MP 53s, 59s, and 64s made me get all tingly inside. Seriously considering trading in the 800 Pros for MP 53s or 59s. Might get more if I sell them on here...so many decisions to make!
I think that the MP 53's are only a tad less forgiving than the JPX 800 Pros. So, go for it - but keep the 800 Pros for a season until you are convinced that the 53"s are better for you.

(I just recently bought a set of 825 Pro's - but my Titleist AP1's are still available when I need them!)

I have never done well with any Taylor Made driver I have ever owned. I feel the same about Callaway drivers. All those purchases were regrets for me, and there were a lot of them. The only Ping driver I ever hit well was the original Rapture. It's not that the clubs were junk, they were just an absolute waste of money for me. The key for regret avoidance is supposed to be fitting. For those that remember the Biggest Big Bertha, here's a story. I went to a Callaway demo day. I hit the Biggest Big great, so I ordered one with the same specs as the demo club. The day the club arrived, I ran to the course. High, high parachutes is all that club could produce for my swing. The pro sent it back the same day.

Amen. I just can't seem to get it right. I thought I had picked up a 4 wood that was going to work great on the BST for a nice price. I hit it at the range (off the mat...it was still snowy) and really, really liked it. Played for the firs time with it in my bag yesterday and all I do is dig holes with it. It just doesn't feel right off the deck.

Maybe it's time to start wasting money on hybrids instead. :)

Wedges are a disaster for me. I just can't settle and keep buying "another two more". At this rate I will have to soon build on ark for my wedge pairs.......

DG Spinner Shafts for the wedges. Not even sure what I was thinking.

Happy to say C-Tapers x flex are taking care of business around the greens now.
