Could Mickelson end up in the booth?

I've heard Johnny Miller's retiring soon. Phil certainly likes to speak his mind, and I don't think he'll have much interest in the PGA Tour Champions. Could he be the next polarizing figure in golf broadcasting?

I'd bet money he'll end up in the booth. I think he'd be good at it.

It's certainly Not about the money. If it were he wouldn't even be playing anymore.

It would be about staying relevant. Keeping busy. Being in TV. Ego.

Once he does quit competition what's he going to Do? I think he'd enjoy it. At least on a limited basis.

I'm not so sure about that. Did you see how much he enjoyed doing Feherty? That was a fun interview. I could totally see him up in the booth.

Depends on how his luck is running on the tables.

Two kinds of retired athletes wind up on tv:

1. Guys who people like to listen to because they have a HUGE profile (Dan Marino for example).

2. Guys who are really good at being on TV due to personality, knowledge, etc, even though they were just a roster player or a run of the mill tour player or whatever. David Fehrety is an example of this.

Sometimes guys get hired because they're in category one and they wind up being awesome. Nick Faldo is an example, David Duval is sort of an example recently (although his profile wasn't quite that of Faldo). These guys typically don't need the money, like others are saying, they just like having something to do. Phil could be this guy if he felt like it.

Still, the current player I MOST want to see on TV is Charles Howell, that guy really loves golf and his enthusiasm is infectious when you hear him talk about it.

I've thought this for a while now. Being the lead commentator is a higher profile gig than playing the senior tour. The pay is probably decent, but the far bigger win is the platform that he can leverage Into larger endorsement deals

I agree. He has a lot of knowledge about a wide variety of topics and a great sense of humor. He would be highly entertaining.

I would love it, his insight and dry sense of humor would be perfect. If you ever watch tennis, did you ever think J MacEnroe would be as good a commentator as he is? He has so much knowledge and conveys it to the masses like know one else can. I think Phil could do the same in golf!

If he went to TV he could always play the Champions Tour on weeks his network didn't have the coverage.

Be great to hear him do some play by play. I could see him getting into it and being entertaining.

But, I imagine he would get board fast.

I could see him doing a one-off job for a tournament but not a consistent gig.

I'm still surprised that Phil doesn't have a Tour Event. Tiger is hosting/running several now and with so many of the Legends having passed on (Byron, Arnie etc) you'd think Phil might get one measly Tour Event to play host.

An event in Vegas would be right up his alley.

I could see him doing a one-off job for a tournament but not a consistent gig.

I agree, I could see a San Diego event and Phil doing some broadcasting from time to time, but I don't think he will be a full time broadcaster like Johnny Miller. I think hosting a tournament and dabbling in some TV time would be fitting for him. I doubt he will play much on the champions tour. Having said that, he will play on the PGA tour until he is a non factor.

Well... Julie Inkster has a job so apparently that's not a big deal to some.

Frank Nobilo should be in Johnny's role. Not sure why they won't give it to him. Probably not enough big wins but I think he's great.
