25 degree hybrid thoughts?

Recommended Posts

I’m curious on thoughts regarding bagging a 25 degree hybrid instead of a 4 iron. I have a 22 degree which flies way longer and higher than a 3 iron for me. Considering getting a 25 degree. They have a low launch low spin shaft and a small players head to it with minimal offset.

Curious if you think a 25 degree would gap well with a 27 degree 5 iron?

I had a 25* hybrid and took it out. But I think there were some features of this specific club that I didn't like, and in principal I think a 25* or so hybrid would be better for me than a 25* iron (I play at a 9 index and this would be a ~180 yard carry club for me, so it's not like I am a great player but not horrible either).

I would say that I do think the higher lofted hybrids need some different features than the lower lofted ones. For me, at 19*-22* I probably need on of the easier to hit heads. For the 25*, it already goes high enough and something smaller (but still more forgiving than an iron) is probably better. This may not be an issue for you, as it sounds like you already have more of a players version in the bag.

Second, for me I think the 25* hybrid and 27* iron may gap fairly close together. I know the hybrid has a longer/lighter shaft and can theoretically be swung faster. However, I think I tend to hit down on the ball more with the irons and I am probably delofting the club (iron) so it's going relatively farther than the two stamped lofts would suggest. This may be something that is my fault though.

I have good gaps with my 22/25 hybrids and 27* 5 iron

I play my hybrids at iron length

4H - 22 = 195 yards

5H - 25 = 185 yards

5i - 27 - 175 yards

I have a Ping G400 26* 5 hybrid that I put in and out of the bag. Even with the GI irons that I play, the G400 5 hybrid is more forgiving than my 5 irons. I have the 5 hybrid out of the bag right now, but who knows. It's an excellent club, and can go back in at any time.

In my case, my 3 and 5 woods are pretty much locks in the bag, and that leaves 2 slots left from 3-5 irons. I pick two from my 3, 4 and 5 G400 hybrids and 5 iron. The 3 hybrid gets the nod, as it is solid and reliable off the tee, and also very playable off the deck. I can choke down if necessary to shorten its distance. So I generally skip the 4 hybrid/iron slot, and go to either the 5 hybrid or 5 iron. That's what works for me, but YMMV. Good luck.

as agolf mentioned above...

It depends on the lofts of the 4 and 5 iron?

for my set of irons, from 1999-2000, loft are 3 iron at 21*, 4 iron at 24* and 5 iron at 27*

I carry a 4 hybrid (22), and a 5 hybrid(25) and a 5 iron (27* - Maxfli Revolution from 2000)

hybrids are TEE XCG7 Beta (2013) and thus are "more modern"

So my 4H is replacing the 3 iron in my set, and the 5H is replacing the 4 iron in my set.

My 5 iron is 27 degrees. I forget how crazy some of these iron lifts are. That’s another topic :). I love my five iron and it wouldn’t be coming out of the bag. I only carry 13 clubs and figure a high launching shot from 200-215 is more valuable than a 235 shot.

I have a 25* Hogan VKTR hybrid that was pretty solid. I only used it when hitting in to a green so I wanted it to launch fairly high and land soft. It was paired with an Irod 75 F4. Shaft was a bit light and may replace it with an 85. Excellent club for what I was using it for. Right now I am trying out a 24* Wishon DIH just to try something else.

@odshot68

It's a great idea. For lots of golfers with less than 105mph driver swings I'd imagine.

I think 23º is pretty standard for a 4hybrid.

There is a thread not long ago at all in the equipment forum that addresses this very same issue in some good detail. I tried searching but couldn't find it? I think it's called "Stiff 5 hybrid is that even a thing?"

I am a fan of straight edged hybrids shafted at iron lengths. Hope someone who is better with the search function can help you find it.

A 26* g400 moves in and out of my bag.

The pros:

It is super easy to elevate into the air. It bails me out on a lot of wayward drives on par 5s. Its a "over the trees and into the layup area" machine.

The bad shots are much better. Usually, for me, a low cut that doesn't lose much distance.

The cons:

It can create a gap on par 3s. You'll hit it way further off a tee than off the deck (At least, I did) because you can easily sweep it without adding loft (like a driver).

It takes a bit of getting used to looking down at it.

It is very difficult to hit low on purpose. Into the wind is tough. Your punch out club will jump one up, so you need to practice hitting ground balls with your 5 instead of your 4. You'll likely also need to practice shots hooding your lowest iron because it won't be low enough in woods or wind.

I've recently added a 26* hybrid to replace my 5i in addition to my 22* that replaced my 5w (also 4i). As a high-capper, I'm examined my game to correct pain points. Consistent distance from the fairway, distance out of the rough, and a shorter distance club off the tee. It was all about confidence, and my game is better for it.

Depends on what your game needs. I just added a 25* Mizuno JPX Fli-Hit o the bag because I liked my 22* XHot 4 Hybrid so much and was struggling w/ my 5-iron. Still trying to dial in directional accuracy (am hitting some snap hooks) but elevating the ball AND fulfilling a yardage gap are good so far.

I have an Adams DHY 27 in place of my 5 iron and it is awesome. I'd recommend you to try the 24* and play it with a similar shaft to your irons.

I put a 25* in my bag a few years ago and its easily my most favorite club in my bag. I can hit so many shots with it from 185 to 160 and bump and runs around the green. I found that I would choose hitting a softer hybrid shot that going down to my 5 iron alot specially when not hitting it that good which is most of the time :). Recently I got one of those portable launch monitors and I'm seeing that I may have some overlap at the top of my bag that I wasn't aware of. I plan to research more and possibly make a change to make my gaps better and possibly add another wedge which should be better than having duplicate yardages in the 200 to 170 range. I may go to a 19*, 23* hybrid setup or I may just ditch the 5 iron. Not sure yet but I still love the 25*.

Op here. I have decided to leave this club alone and swing harder at my 5 iron. I’m going to fill gap between strong 3 and 22 degree hybrid instead. We can’t have 15 clubs.

Tough club to get to work for you if you still have teh swingspeed to get long irons in the air. I tried this a few years ago and couldn't get an Adams 23* A12 Pro to work for me without hooking the bejesus out of it (loved the 18* tho). Settled in with the Adams Dhy's as they are smaller headed 'hybrids' to DI design and am comfortable with the transition. It can be tough to look at a big headed high lofted club and feel confident with it.
