I live less than 20 minutes from Pine Valley and will likely never be able to get out there. Just don’t have the golf connections.

Other than PV or Augusta wouldn’t pay more than $200. PV for the pure golfer’s day, no frills just love of the game, and Augusta for the history and beauty. My coworker got to fly, stay, and play Augusta; locally has played Merion and Aronimink and says Augusta is on a completely different level with the experience you get there.

ANGC - $2500 (PM me if member)

PV - $750

Cypress Point - $500

Oakmont - $350

Merion - $300

Shinnecock - $400

Pebble Beach - $300

National Golf Links - $300

Sand Hills - $175

Fishers Island - $175

Some of these I wouldn't actively seek those rates, but if some buddies ask to help fill a weekend foursome and the course was part of the itinerary, I'd shell it out if I had to without making a senseless fuss.

Would not pay $.10 to play Augusta once. Would go pretty deep to play it twice though - I’m going to completely eff up that first round, but I think a second day I could put together something good. Oakmont maybe a grand. Pebble a few hundred. All others - interest level just isn’t high enough to care that much.

Did everyone miss where I said on vacation I am more willing to spend to play?

As to a normal round, I don't want to spend that much... I can go to Warren at Notre Dame and walk 18 for $31. It may not be a top 200, but it is definitely up there. Twilight at Harbor Shore is $100, I do try to make it there once a season.

But for the most part, my game isn't good enough to enjoy these courses. I can hack together a mid 80s round at my home course just fine. Why do I need to got an expensive course to shoot bad?

You have played pebble many times but would pay less than half to going rate at pebble to play merion or shinnecock? I think you're lying to yourself.

Maybe. But some of the big name courses only appeal because they have hosted the US Open. Pebble appeals for much more than that. If I had never played Pebble I would pay much more to play it than I would Oakmont, Merion or Shinnecock.

I never paid $500 to play Pebble. My company took customers there and I had to entertain them.. many times. So I didn't have to pay.

I really enjoy playing my home course with my friends. I have a turf degree, and worked at courses, and while I appreciate all those courses and their histories, they are just another course to me. Every time I've ever played a big time course, when I was done, I always thought I would have had just as good a time playing back home with my friends.

Most likely once in a lifetime experience. I'll always make more money, won't always have a chance to play those courses. Playing good golf courses is one of my favorite things to do in life, it just happens to be expensive. I'll enjoy those 4 hours more than the extra couple thousand in the bank.

I think you're completely missing the boat on...well everything about golf.

These are NOT "normal" rounds, so you trying to say your vacation rounds are different from normal rounds has nothing to do with anything.

These are all special places. Nobody cares what you or anybody shoots at any point during your golf career, whether it be a super nice course or if it's a dog track. If someone goes out there and shoots a 115 at Pine Valley or ANGC, that person can and probably will have had the best golf day of their entire lives just by getting to play that course. It's the experience of being able to play at an exclusive course. If your score dictates whether or not you have an enjoyable day on the course, well then please stick to your $31 "normal" rounds.

Pebble Beach is over $400pp even staying at the Lodge. Not worth it. Two hundred and fifty pp is my green fee limit because my wife plays too.

My nostalgic #1 course is St. Andrews, and tournament event is The British Open, so I'd cough it up there. As for the suggested list shared above, not happening if over $250pp. I can find better things to do with that much money. $500 buys a mighty fine bottle of vintage Single Malt that lasts a long time for this sipper.
