Careless gamble on Mizuno ST190 3w, didn't pay off

So I was so in love with the way the new st190 3 wood looks, and have an empty slot in my bag I picked one up online. Well, I didn't even notice when I had it at the house but I took it to the range and as soon as I set it down to take my first swing I realized that it sits wide open and definitely flatter than usual which is all bad for me.

Is this a new trend in fairways, or just one manufacturer's decision? It would make sense to have that stance on the less forgiving club of the set, like on the more compact, adjustable TS version, but most average golfers don't want that look right?

From what I've heard the Mizuno woods and hybrids are notorious for sitting flatter and having a square to open face. Better players tend to like this setup as well as guys who fight a hook. I know I struggle with hitting it left and can't stand seeing anything resembling a closed face. The ST-190 sounds right up my alley.

The standard version has no adjustments at all. And I didn't go for the TS because of the smaller head and less forgiving nature, I am not a strong 3w player, and will only use it off the tee.

I had them both, saw no difference in forgiveness. I went with to because of adjustability, neither were open for me and that’s on my loft, lie, face angle golfworks gage. They both were same lie, they are flatter than clubs like Callaway flash, can’t comment on others.

Ya that is true, for a fade player like me, I play my clk hybrids in "upright" setting, which is actually just the standard stance, as opposed to "standard" setting which is actually 1° or 1.25° flat I forget which.

Does the ST190 TS sleeve have an "upright" setting? I wonder if Mizuno has a 14° 3 wood? I could turn that up to 15° and that would in turn close the face, and make it more upright...

Well at this point I need to try a TS

Lie angle on the ST190 3W is 57*, Ping G410 3W is 56.5*. Mizuno is usually flatter than other OEMs with their irons, but looks like the lie angle is consistent with what others are offering for the fairways.

When you say your ST190 sits "wide open", any chance the head could have unintentionally gotten bent, either off the line at Mizuno or from the seller? The Mizuno fairways are definitely not manufactured with an open face.

I believe my Epic Flash SZ fwy is 55* lie, so mizuno is not the flattest by a good bit

I had a custom fitting for shaft for the 190 3TS and couldn't be happier with the results. I think for the OP, make sure you have the right setting and shaft combo and then SW for your tempo and it is as good as anything out. Good luck

I'm actually right there along with what you're all saying, after sitting and thinking about it I compared it to my old 3wood, a jetspeed, and while it is flatter and more open than that one, you're right in that it's not much more if at all compared to other 3 woods, I think that old jetspeed handicapped me by altering my view of what's normal. Nim gonna give it another range session and a full round before I give up on it. Thank you guys for the pep talk, I think I needed it! I think I got into my own head once I noticed the way it sits.

You're actually right about that and that's one thing I thought of but I'm still not opposed to maybe trading it for a TS version because at least I could switch it to the upright lie angle and just leave everything else as is.

I second the practice of "aiming the clubface". Everyone does it with their irons, why should our woods be any different? I have aimed all of my clubs for over 40 years and have no issue hitting fades or draws with any club. FA becomes a non-issue most of the time when you do this.

No offense meant to the OP, but this is an excellent example of how important it is to get fit, unless you cant do that yourself. And yes, the OP admits he made a mistake and every club should come with a note saying what kind of player its intended for. I love how it sits. But it all depends on what you want. Far too many fairways sits closed at adress and its not for everyone. I know, if the face sits closed, I gonna get a few duck hooks per round and that really screws up your confidence. I hope you find a new, better fairway!!

This thing is hot as Hades. The Atmos TS Black 70S is a noodle but if you time that buggy whip just right it will hit it a mile. I’ve ordered an aftermarket tip to put an old school V2 X stiff in it. If it all works out I have a rocket launching mini driver on my hands. Also will have an Atmos 3 wood shaft for sale on the cheap haha
