Hes had basically the same shot at Torrey Pines North before under a metal fence and nearly hit the green from 80 yard with an upside down apex 2 hybrid

This is definitely an issue in the rules. If a ball is in bounds under a fence you should get relief. Seriously if you can get relief being blocked out behind a tree because 1 cm of the heel of your shoe is on a cart path (DJ in Mexico) then this should be a free drop too

Using the old rules he would have had to replay that shot again, the fact he was able to drop 1 club length back onto the course doesn't seem right. Unless he actually took a penalty drop a second time? But that's not what the announcers are implying.

Yeah I officially don’t understand the rules anymore. If the ball is in bounds and there is a rope line or a truck in front of him...he can take the fence down or get line of sight relief.

Yes that's true. Course boundary markers you don't get relief from. It's been that way, well forever more or less. And btw he probably already caught a break because that that is probably not a typical course boundary marker fence. He likely hit that netting and it kept it in play. Lots of times those fences when permanent are split rail type fences and he probably would have gone through something like that. An unplayable lie was always an option for him there. Are we seriously in a move to eliminate all risk and rub of the green type stuff? FFS when you hit it that far offline and almost hit it off the course and it somehow stays in that's a good break. The play he tried wasn't his only option. He was stupid and he paid for it.

Under the new rules, the reference point is the position of the previous shot taken (may be estimated), and the relief area is within one club length of the reference point.

I just legit didn’t know that you could be in play, with what is clearly a temp fence impeding you, and not be able to do anything about it.

 

Maybe I just don’t play nice enough courses with fences for OB markers. White stakes is the usual for me. I guess a fence supersedes the white stakes?

I don’t understand the scoring of Phil’s 10th hole at all, particularly in light of the new OB rule. They scored it as though it was a lateral hazard. But his ball was OB. Can someone explain this to me?
