If you hit your 3 wood over 300 yards

said guy hits it 300 with his 3 wood. Obviously he would use his driver if he had the same consistency with the driver and get 340 ..every possible time.

If he uses a 15* 3 wood and a 9 degree driver..going to a 12* driver with a longer than 3 wood shaft would give him the improved accuracy over the 9*. This is not new.

A good friend of mine can get 300 with his 3w after roll is taken into account. His is a solid 275 carry and flights like a bullet though. When his driver isn’t working I tell him to put that into play as it’s more than. Long enough for any course here in Tucson. But the thing we have more than anywhere are dry firm fairways so yeah, 300+ 3w is not an abnormal thing. Unfortunately this also breeds a huge disillusion to people and makes them think they carry it further than they do.

I have only seen one person truly carry 300 yards with a 3w. He was a former MLB catcher and we played a scramble together. Couldn’t string 2 solid shots together, driver was completely out of the question, but man he could mash that 3w. I get my driver around 300 +- w/ roll and he flew mine a few times.

On the PGA Tour, when faced with a level lie at sea level, no wind, the average 3-wood carry is between 240 and 250 yards.

Statistically speaking you hit your 3 wood in the fairway 5-8 % more often than your driver so unless there are hazards to be concerned about you want to hit your driver. If you hit your 3 wood 300 yards and you have a 65 yard wide dispersion this means you probably have a 70-72 yard wide dispersion with driver at 325 lets say. This means that if the whole is 68 yards wide between penalty hazards then 3 wood is the play. If it's 75 between penalty hazards then driver is the play. I would never take out my driver just because I hit the ball far. You only take out your driver if your driver dispersion is large beyond reason AND you can gain something by adding a replacement club to your bag (2 iron, 64 degree wedge, etc.).

That is all irrelevant, we are just talking about glory numbers on GC2

When I say "you" I am referring to the fictional player, not the OP. No player should take out their driver just because their 3 wood goes far is the point I was trying to make.

At least one other reason to leave the driver out of the bag is the speed of the ball and the lack of reaction of the eyes to the flight of the ball.

If you can hit your 3 wood over 300 yards, do you drop your driver?

Or do you try and hit your driver even further than your 3 wood?

Just in general as a strategy, no specific course/hole/situation.

IF I could hit my 3 metal 300 consistently, I would still have the big dawg in my bag.  I recently brought on/hired another personal trainer and he used to play semi-pro baseball.  Played short stop over in Australia and Belgium.  He's a legit 190 ball speed on average.  He had a picture on his phone of his numbers on flight scope and I played a round with him this past week.  The ball literally shoots off the face and has some serious hang time to it.  He's so wild with his driver that I have suggested he use his 3 metal more, but he insists on using driver.  He says chicks dig the long ball.  😉
