How many different courses do you play per year?

Recommended Posts

There are a lot of things I love about golf. One thing is that every course is different in terms of layout, difficulty, scenic etc.

It is not my ambition to play a different course every single time I grab my clubs. Nevertheless I prefer to play different courses throughout the year.

How about you? How many different courses do you play a year?

For myself its probably 10. I'm a member in victoria at a private club over the winter so I play pretty much exclusively there, I have only played one other course here this year. In the summer I work at a golf course in Calgary, we got 3 nines there so the variety is good, also most of the courses worth playing around Calgary are private so it really depends on how many times I can convince my boss to take me some where. The third variable is tournaments, which I am beginning to play in less of less of.

Last year was over 60...

Holy moly.... that's a number, wow! And how many hours did you spend at work?
Easily 50+/week. We usually play at least 2, if not 3, different courses a week. It will stay light in Chicago mid summer until 8:30ish so a 5:00 tee time can generally offer a full round. 4 day trips to AZ/FL are 2 different courses per day so it adds up somewhat quickly. We're also blessed to have over 100 great courses within 2 hours of Chicago and driving is a non-issue for us. IL has over 400 golf courses by itself...and I have so many to go to play every one!

Oh yes, you are definitely blesses to have such an offer within reach. That's a bit a disadvantage over here, overseas: golf is not such a mass sport so the offer of courses is limited. That's why I spend my golfing vacations mainly in the US to take advantage of the broad and wide and great offering.

Like DavePelz4 I'm from Chicago and probably played close to 60. There's only a handful of courses I played more than once last year. Plus there was a trip to Orlando and Wisconsin with multiple courses. I recorded scores for handicap at 41 different courses. Throw in the rounds not recorded due to scramble format or match play and its probably around 55.

Since I've been tracking rounds, I've played 330+ different courses. I'm guessing the actal number is closer to 360.

In a single year, I play ~15 to 25 new courses a year, as I try to take at least 3 winter golf trips to keep me sane. This winter alone, I played 16 rounds on 14 courses in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, and Arizona, and 13 of the courses were new for me. I also traveled to Bandon Dunes, Indianapolis, French Lick, and Palm Springs last year for rounds on 17 additional new courses.

Like DavePelz4, I'm in Chi-beria, errr, I mean Chicago, and we have numerous public courses from which to choose. I have two "home" courses, which account for ~40 percent of my local rounds during the March - November season, but the other rounds are filled out on several dozen area courses. I used to play at least 5 new Chicago area courses each season, but I have have to travel farther, and farther from the city to get to a course I haven't played. Last year I only played 3 new Chicago area courses.

So, in the 2013 calender year I played 79 total rounds on 50 courses. Of the 50 courses, 21 were first time rounds.

Last spring I ran into a slew of incredibly slow rounds (5+ hours) on the public courses around the city, and I seriously thought about joining a private club. However, I just couldn't accept the idea of playing the same course week in and week out.

I am a member of a nice course where I play say 40 of my 50 annual rounds.

I play in 3-4 scrambles every year at other courses for work and then play a few other rounds elsewhere to.

60?!?!? that is awesome.

I got 17 last year, will probably get at least that many this year. But only because I'm an addict and not a member anywhere (nor really affluent enough ). So I basically play anywhere within 50mi radius that I can get a good deal on golfnow or teeoff(ezlinks).

My handicap would be better if I played the same course most of the time. However, I get bored playing the same tract all the time. Playing a variety of courses is much more fun.
I actually find that playing many courses, many for the first time, helps my handicap, at least in the area of course management. When I play my home courses, I find that I take many unnecessary risks, expecting to pull the miracle shots. When I play unfamiliar courses, I tend to avoid trouble off the tee by playing short of the bunkers, or taking a conservative line, and fire for the middle of the green. I'll tell you, fairways and greens aren't exciting as firing at a tucked pin position, but it certainly helps the scoring.

The last couple of years I've had trips to California where I've picked up four and six new courses. Along with a few new ones that are relatively close its been somewhere in the ten (+/- 1 or 2) area. But those last two years have been an aberration for me, typically I'm probably lucky if I play one or two new courses in a year.

Chicago and the north and west parts of Illinois are true golf meccas. We're so blessed to have such a variety and also access to great courses in southern Wisconsin. Our group never hesitates to drive anywhere to play and our longest drive last year to play 1 round was over 3 hours each way. Some of us also take a golf vacation at home and will play 7-10 great courses over a week.

There are some great historical courses that hosted pros like Hogan, Nelson, etc. back in the 1940's, several courses that have held LPGA events, Web.com events, Symetra Tour events and the PGA. It's sad that we don't have a regular scheduled tour stop here any more.

The total irony in the courses played last year is that I live in a golf community with a 27 hole facility and I didn't play it once last year.

I'd also add north/central Indiana, and southwest Michigan to the list. There are dozens of top notch courses within 3 hours of Chicago, including courses near Benton Harbor, MI (e.g. Harbor Shores), Kalamazoo, MI (Stonehedge, Yarrow), South Bend, IN (Warren and Blackthorn), Lafayette, IN (Birck), and Indianapolis, IN (Brickyard, The Fort, Purgatory, Prairie View).
