All Things Michigan Golf....the Mulligan (MOD EDIT: NO POLITICS, NO COVID-19, NO ECONOMICS)

Walked 9 today it's so wet. Top is thawed but there's nowhere for the water to go. 2 feet of ice in the bunkers. Should be much better after the next few days.

I was looking for a place yesterday to walk a quick 9. Where did you play?

Not public. I saw Washtenaw opens tomorrow for walking only.

Looking for some help on reshafting irons. Already have the set of shafts (new) and talked with MoG but they were quoting 60/iron even though I have the shafts. Looking for any other suggestions on places I can trust for reasonable price.

Check out Wolverine Custom Golf. They have an Instagram that you can DM and get prices - can't recall the exact price but it was way less than $60 a shaft.

Ive been in contact with him, gonna have him build my national customs when they come in!

Need pics of the NCW irons stat!

Ditto! Would love to get a set in the near future.

haha they are just a set of wedges...but i will get picks up when they are here!

I've got a builder I send all my stuff to in South Carolina. He's built 2 sets of irons for me, and a few different 3 woods and drivers.

His prices are excellent and everyone I've sent his way has been extremely satisfied as well. His communication is great as well.

If you're interested, let me know and I can send you his info.

My buddy Steve, head of the Detroit golfers network, and I are looking to put on a spring fun scramble on good Friday 4/19, on Sharf. I was able to get Perry to let all guests play for $80 which is $20 less than the normal guest rate. I'll be giving out free swag for LD, CTP etc. More details to follow.

Hey guys how is Apple Mountain in Freeland? The pics looks nice but I've never been there. I'm gonna do a litle stay and play in Mount Pleasant. I'll play St Ives and Tullymore, and I was thinking of adding either Bucks Run or Apple Mountain. I really like Bucks Run (as I've already played it) but thought if Apple Mountain was worth a run I'd check it out instead.

It’s about on par with Bucks Run quality-wise, though I prefer BR myself and if you asked me to pick one to play I’d probably pick BR 8 times out of 10. I think I prefer the woodsy up north feel of BR. Apple Mountain is a more typical course that winds its way up a ski hill, through some forest, and then through a high end neighborhood. Just different vibes, but good golf either way?

EDIT: just re-reading your post.....save yourself travel time and play either Bucks Run or Eagle Glen in Farwell. Mt. P to Freeland is probably an hour drive (don’t speed on M-20...cops, state and tribal, everywhere)

I had my max iron fitting today at MOG. I had never recorded actual trackman numbers with my current set before so it was nice to see where I was at. It was pretty much what I thought. Plenty of distance but could use a little extra launch and spin in order to be optimal.

I told the fitter I didn't want to gain or lose much distance because I really like my gapping to my hybrids and wedges and didn't want to mess that up. The numbers quickly eliminated alot of sets, such as TM P790, Cally Apex, Srixon 585, Ping i500?, etc. because I was getting equal or worse spin numbers and in some cases picking up too much extra distance.

The club that really shined for me was the Mizzy 919 forged. They were weaker lofted (~2°) but I didn't lose any distance and picked up a little launch and another 500 rpm of spin. In the fitter's estimation it wasn't a big enough improvement to buy new clubs though unless I really had the itch.

The other set I really liked was the Titleist AP3. They had exceptional feel for a cast club and put out almost identical numbers to my current set.

I might start browsing ebay later in the year for each of these two sets in case I find a deal, but for now I'm sticking with my OG Cobra forged TEC's.

Another late second half collapse. Tip of the cap to Sparty, they were better this year...but I dont envy their draw with Duke. Committee did them no favors.

I used to walk Timber Ridge in HS and Junior Tournaments.  They might now allow walking now.  Forest Akers for sure.  Groesbeck is very walkable.

Go north just a bit to Eagle Eye.

I got to get out to EE this year. Never played it, but have always heard good things.

Eagle Eye is walkable... they let me walk it last year when i went as a single during the week... not sure about the weekends peak times thou. there were only maybe 2 lengthy transitions that were not even that bad. it was a rather lovely walk. College Fields is very walkable too just one walk through a tunnel under a road

Eagle Eye is definitely walkable—they’ve had GAM event qualifiers there throughout the years. I don’t know if they allow it all the time, though. I haven’t played Timber Ridge since I was a kid, but I always walked whenever I played golf back then, so it was walkable at the time.

I can’t think of a course in the Lansing area where there’s anything that would prevent you from walking due to terrain or distance between holes. It’s not exactly a hilly area. Course policies may prevent that, though.

If only Red Cedar was still open. I always forget that 3Jack is a fellow Dimondale kid!

A course that I think is really good and a decent value is just north of Lansing in St. Johns - The Emerald.

I haven't played College Fields, but that is also a decent course (from what I have heard) that allows walking. I walked about 1/2 of my rounds last year and I want to get to 70% this year.

I hope everyone gets out on the course this weekend.

I played a lot of rounds at Red Cedar, Waverly, Sycamore, and Groesbeck as a kid. It's a bummer that 3 of those are gone now (though I guess Sycamore is now a driving range and First Tee learning center, which is cool). I ruined many a good round at Red Cedar by trying to cut the corner on #8 (? - whichever hole was a 90* dogleg back by the river in the woods). I probably did it successfully once and always thought I could re-create that shot.

Got my first round in today...kinda. 5hrs and 14 holes later I walked off the course. First nice day of the year and everyone plays like they’re in the US Open. Dude in front of me had a minimum of 6 practice swings per shot. Still felt great to have the sun on my face and swing the sticks. Anyone else get out today?
