All Things Michigan Golf....the Mulligan (MOD EDIT: NO POLITICS, NO COVID-19, NO ECONOMICS)

Next weekend I’m going to be in Suttons Bay, MI and am lucky enough to be able to play 2 rounds. First round is going to be at Crystal Downs and the next round I’m looking at Manitou Passage Golf Club (due to location) and then if I want to travel some Arcadia Bluffs. Anyone have an opinion of the 2 or other suggestions? Thank you

My game is trash. I think I’ve broken 80 once this year, and i’ve Been 90+ twice, and I haven’t done that once in probably 5 years. It’s been a combination of things—bad chipping, making big numbers because of errant tee shots, basically everything except putting, since swiz showed me that I was taking it back ridiculously inside the line, and I’ve worked on improving that with pretty good results. Not being able to play or practice regularly hasn’t helped. It’s kind of a weird excuse, but I think part of the issue is that I’ve dropped 15-20 lbs since last year, and I barely touched a club over the winter, so I think that change is taking some time to adjust to. I’ve been pretty discouraged so far, but I think I’ll get it figured out.

My game was doing great until I played in 40 deg temps and 20 mph winds at Lost Dunes last weekend! All I can say is wow what a course. The more rounds I get out there the more I like it. The pin placements can easily shift my score 7 strokes or more!

I paired a weekend trip with a buddy who has never been, with a putter fitting for us both at Bettinardi coming out of Midway. If anyone lives in driving distance of LD and wants to play let me know.

Sweet, have fun. I'm rolling a new betti armlock myself right now, seeing a lot of them around my area although probably influenced by me haha

Just had a nice trip to Forest Dunes. Weather was not great including some snow on Friday morning while playing The Loop. It was my first time playing the Loop and it is a unique experience. Definitely plays more like a Links Course compared to any other experience I have had in the US.

My game is not great, but showing signs of getting into form. I did have a 74 at BCCC and 75 in the snow on Loop Red.

We did take carts. I walk most of my rounds in town, but when playing 36 a day, carts were needed. Actually easy to go around in a cart - you can park almost anywhere.

I achieved my lowest handicap at the end of summer and tried to carry that over through the winter when I could catch a 30+ day to get to a heated range. Made two swing changes and gained weight. The changes are causing issues on my approach shots and consistency in general. I have two rounds this spring that stand out for different reasons that showed what I could really do if I could get long and short game humming together. Like 3JP, I need to stay the course and get more reps and hopefully it falls into place.

Headed up to Boyne this Thursday for my Annual Buddies trip and while we are all pretty pumped, the weather is not looking great. We have Little Traverse on Thursday then 36 at Bay Harbor Friday, 18 at the Hills Saturday and 18 at Crooked Tree on Sunday. Hoping the whole weekend isn't a wash out at this point based on the forecast.

We originally were going to do Arcadia for our "arrival round" on Thursday when we drive up however none of us have played it before. With the chance of iffy weather this early in the season we decided to go against it for now and save it for later this summer with a Treetops trip we have planned. I'm pretty disappointed as I wouldn't have cared weather wise, but majority ruled on that one. Anyways, have a blast, can't be 3 rounds there and I've heard great things about the new South course!

Arcadia is outstanding and both courses are world class in my opinion. The bluffs is tough but fantastic and the new south course is awesome and a riot to play. Enjoy!!!

Lyon Oaks does not have a specific area for the short game, but they do allow pitching and chipping to the large practice green. They also have a quality sand trap hidden at the far end of the range.

I played the Loop Red on Thursday morning last week (first time), and it's okay, but I don't see how it's getting rated in the top 50 public courses in the country like it is (according to Golf Digest, I think both routings were ranked between 45-50. I just don't see it. I am a fan of firm/fast golf and having options other than just flying it to the hole, but in my opinion, the green complexes just don't work. There was a frost delay, so I'm not sure if they weren't able to get out to cut pins on all of the greens for the direction we were playing, but 3 of the last 5 holes we played had hole locations that were essentially impossible to get anywhere near. The reversible concept is interesting, and it's fun to bomb away on the wide fairways, but for a resort destination, there's a little too much local knowledge required to be able to get it close on the greens.

One interesting piece of info, though. The starter (who was quite a talker), was saying that there are plans for another course on the property (it may have been roughly routed and/or partially cleared -- I wasn't totally sure what he was saying) and that David McLay Kidd was in line to design it (though there are apparently some issues that may get in the way of that happening). Take it with a grain of salt, but it would be pretty cool if that's true.

Was the albatross on #1? I’ve definitely made some eagles on that hole :)

How was the condition of Diamond with the rain we've gotten? Looking to head out there this week.
