Looks like I have to change my answer ... at least for a short term. I have officially put the 1 iron, aka the butter knife, back in the bag. Yes, it doesn't match everything else (it is from my 15 year old Cleveland TA1 irons) but I put it in the bag for the heck of it (and to show Steele47 when we played Friday) and it just felt right again. I think I am going to drag it around for a while and see what happens. Might even displace the hybrid for a while if it continues to work out. :)

Why are 3 irons becoming extinct? Are they really that hard to hit?
[/quote]

I'm probably an outlier as I started with a 2 iron and the desire to learn to hit it ... at 14 years olf. Personally, I think the 3 iron is disappearing as the loft today is closer to an older 2 iron. Most people cannot get the launch right to be able to hit it as far as they would hit a hybrid. Plus, a hybrid has more mass behind it and the CG can be manipulated to help get the ball up easier than a longer iron.

Learnt to play golf with an 8 iron and a 3 iron. 3 iron is still my go to club for tight tee shots and 195-200 yard shots into greens. The lack of availability of 3 irons in most sets these days is really annoying!!!

6-iron, and then I go to a 4-hybrid. I can choke up on the 4-hybrid for the in-between distance.

I am 62, don't turn as well as I did 10 years ago, and don't have the swing speed that I had when I was in my 20's and could hit a 3-iron. Heck, back then I had a Lynx 1-iron that I played, and hit pretty well a lot of the time. Now I rely on a 5-wood and a 23* 4-hybrid.

For me it's the 712U 3 iron, easy to hit and elevate, and straight as an arrow. I have hit every hybrid out there and did not hit any consistently. The 712U is perfect for tight par 4s or long par 3s.

I personally really like gaming hybrids. I can easily strike a 3 and 4 iron but I find their lower trajectories make it more difficult for my balls to hold onto greens. The higher trajectories in my hybrids has given me more opportunities to hold the green and therefore I've been scoring consistently lower playing a 2, 3, and now a 4 hybrid.

Depending on the course I might toss a 3 or 4 iron back into the bag because I find they are easier to hit knockdown shots and I play in a very windy area. But all in the all I stick with my hybrids as I've become more of a "fair weather golfer" as I don't play as much as I used to.

I know many who game hybrids because they are "easier to hit than longer irons". I personally don't find that as my strike is decent enough that I can play either. But I find that the higher trajectory really helps me.

Honestly, it's just not a necessity.

I have no problem hitting my Mizuno MP-64 long irons but I virtually never come across a situation which calls for a 3-iron where a solid 4 or a feathered 5w isn't just as good.

Depends on the course and how well I'm hitting the ball at that time. I have and can usually hit my 2i and 3i but more and more I just keep my 2h and 3h in the bag since I'm not playing and practicing as much as I'd like. They aren't as demanding and I have confidence in them...

2-iron. 690.MB (no 3-iron)

I just can't get my head around the hybrids, I hit them a mile in the air, never as straight as I want and I can't do that on the windy prairies. Next club in the bag is a 15.5* 3-wood

When it comes to ballflight, shaft is as important in my hybrids as my driver. I went through a lot of bad ones before finding the Speeder 904HB. It's perfect for me in my Cleveland HiBores. I think it was/is the best hybrid shaft ever made for an agressive swinger of hybrids. I try to hit mine like my 7 iron and the results are spectacular. Every shot possible, high or low and they feel just perfect. I swap my 3i and 3h more than my deuces but that may subside this year if I keep having hybrid success like the end of last year. I highly suggest for anyone having ballooning hybrid troubles picking up an old school 904HB shaft with the ion finish if you can. If you don't like it, sell it to me!

2 iron. Baby is sweeeeeet off the tee. Try it, you won't regret it

I miss having a 1 and 2 iron. Not sure how much run I'd get out here on the soft grainy fairways, but back when I played links golf, I could get my 1 iron out there to 250-280 with the right bounce on a hard downwind fairway.

In fact, does anyone make a new 1 iron?

Not in my opinion... but I learned to play golf before hybrids were even a figment, and I still love my 2i. And contrary to the prevailing hybrid value bloat, darn near all the people I encounter that have them in the bag, don't seem to hit them all that well either. I read that as another bandage to a deeper problem.

I agree with you Pepperturbo. I tried all types of hybrids with nothing working better than an iron, that is until I found x2 hot pro. I will never be back to a 2-3 iron...

The X2 hot just works for me. Otherwise I agree, hybrids can be as difficult to find as a reliable 3 wood.
