Golf slang you created

Every time my grandpa comes to hole where you have to hit over the water he says, "You know Des, if you're not wet you're good!". Even though it's kind of stating obvious and not very relatable, it makes me smile every time. It's also a common saying in the golf group now that we play in together over the summer.

My dad played through some older gentleman at some point last year and heard them saying how many "riders" they had...when they all finished and were in the clubhouse, he heard them telling the pro that same thing. Oh Bill had a good day, had 4 "riders." So my pops asks them what it means and they say, well, any shot that you need to get in the cart and actually ride to, is a good one these days, so we call out our "riders" and that is how we know how well we played that day. All chuckled, good stuff from the old guys.

I'm a Padres fan and when I'm playing bad and make two pars in a row to get out of the funk I go, "I'm on a Padres winning streak!". As their winning streaks usually only last two games and aren't impressive = two pars in a row.

My wife will look at my face when I come home from a round and say either "LF1" or "LF2".

"LF" stands for either "Legitimate Fun 1" or "Loser Fun 2".

If I'm smiling and still have a little pep in my step that usually mean LF1 and that I was hitting well and the ball was falling within two putts or less.

LF2 means I was all over the place and got my money's worth because I was swinging the clubs a lot during the round.

Zugg, zuggy, zuggs... Any variation of zugg really... We use zugg when referring to spin.. So a wedge shot that checks right next to the hole one might say 'man that had a lot of zugg on it!'

Shapiro - a mulligan that you hit poorly, don't play then claim you still have a mulligan since you didn't use it... My dad used to play with a guy with the last name Shapiro and this is how he employed mulligans.. It's just kind of stuck between him and I

Anna - As in 'Do it for Anna'... Anna was a stripper whom our Ryder Cup team fell in love with a few years back and become the motivation for the team entering Saturday's matches. We came back in the points race and while we lost the cup that year, our motivation seemed to improve and we made a run. So for the last few years 'Do it for Anna' has become our rally cry. I wonder how she is doing today...

Brought a guy into my group a few times that liked to call what type of shot he was going to hit when all he had was a banana slice. He would get confused on some of his terminology also. When I come up to the tee box, I now like to announce that I am going to hit "a cut draw fade."

TV Shot - A shot good enough that the broadcast team would cut away from the current action to show a replay of from a guy who hasn't been on TV all day. As in, "and this was just a moment ago over at 14..."

AT&T - Very long putt

Jimmy - Old Seinfeld reference... Started out with "Jimmy's in the zone" or "Jimmy hit it close there." Thereafter was shortened to the "Jimmy."

 • 3 weeks later...

I play with a few of my old baseball teammates so a lot of our stuff stems from the diamond. Big slice or hook = "double down the line". Come up a club short = "warning track power". My favorite one liner is from the announcer Harry Doyle in Major League, when speed is good but the line isnt "Just a bit outside, he tried the corner and missed"

For that odd occasion when two balls come to rest relatively close to one another on the green or fairway....

"I haven't seen two balls that close since I looked in the mirror this morning"

Whenever I ask for a yardage I ask my playing buddy "google the flag" or "give me a dart" with a rangefinder.

I like "Google the Flag". I am going to have to steal that one.

I once played with an Army Captain who was a dentist. As his drive hooked into a ravine, he calmly states "that is going to need a medevac."

While playing in a charity scramble, a local sports personality who was our celeb, skyed a tee shot about a mile in the air and about 50 yds in front of the tee box. As the ball was reaching it's apex he calmly dropped his driver and gave the "fair catch" signal like a punt returner. Guys were either on the ground or doubled over in laughter.

Now every time somebody hits a moon ball, we all instinctively start waving the arms for a fair catch.

Any putt that lips out is called a "Monica" = All lips and no hole!

For those who were around in the nineties know exactly what that means.

A few years ago, I was having a really nice round at one of my favorite courses with a retired navy buddy. (possible high 60"s) I had a meltdown on the 17th hole with a quadruple after getting tangled up with the trees for a couple shots. Ended up with a low 70's on the card, but was "fuming" in a joking way!

My buddy is tallying up the bets and shaking his head.

Me......................what?

Him...............................Man O man! Too bad about 17th. You were going low. I was having fun watching. What happened?????

Me....... You saw a ship wreck........... that's what F_ing happened!

Him........ Goes quiet for a couple minutes then busts out laughing his a** off. He said you own it now buddy.

Me......... (dumbfounded). Own what????

Him...... Nice round "shipwreck"

He's been calling me that ever since, when he wants to needle me.

classic.

I would throw a "Oh captain, my captain" your way too, just to mix things up on the same premise.

Years ago when I or someone in my group hit a low shot that turned over sharply I would say, "That one's quacking." Not sure why. Eventually we started calling those shots Duck Hooks.

That caught on and I've heard it used in a lot of instances. I don't bother to tell people where the term originated. I'm just glad people enjoy it.
