Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round2)

Hacked it around Carriage Greens yesterday. Seems like that course always has potential, but they just don't put enough into it. Hired a new crew a few years ago, so it's better than it was (never drained right before), but I still feel like it's an underachiever.

Sorry but there's better choices locally.

No doubt, but I had a gift certificate I needed to use up, and I needed to stay close to home yesterday.

BTW, I don't understand the point of telling someone they could have played a better course. It's all relative and there are always better courses available, depending on some level of subjectivity and what's important to you. If I'd played 7B as recently mentioned, one could suggest Dubs. If Dubs, once could suggest Mistwood (based on cost vs layout).

I'm all for constructive comments, but where's the value in telling someone they played at a course not deemed good enough for someone else?

Ha! You haven't been here very long. Just wait for the hyperbole to really pick up over the summer months. The scorchingly hot takes are the purest form of unintentional comedy you'll find anywhere on the interwebs (see: hyperbole). "Whistling Straits is a one-star dump" remains my personal favorite but that gem got its own thread it was so insane. You'll see plenty of others that are slightly less-absurd but are clearly written for an audience of one. I'll be supplying several.

Yeah, I get that people have opinions about courses, think more/less of some than many people and may even want to ruffle some feathers with comments, but where's the value in just telling someone they could have played somewhere better? No sh*t, Sherlock. I could critique Carriage Greens along with anyone else...it's got a lot of warts. You wanna note that there are only 4-5 interesting holes? Fine. Slow greens? Yep. Don't groom the bunkers enough? Check.

But sometimes, it's just about getting out somewhere and having fun playing the game. I walked on and got in a 3 hour round on a public course *for free*, for god's sake. For anyone who simply wants to say there are better options without articulating a cogent perspective on why they don't like the course, I say get over yourself.

Woah! That escalated.

On one hand you say "No doubt", and then go off. No worries. Just opinions. All cool. GDN is the best course around ever! Carry on.

Ruffle Feathers? Yeah it's OK at times but pace is almost always an issue.

Played Broken Arrow yesterday. Course/greens were in really good condition except for the sand traps (the usual for Chicago area courses). Had a blah score of 90. It was a great day for golf - hardly anyone out there. the 2 of us got done in 3:15.

.... We have different ideas about "great day". I wasn't gonna play but went in the backyard with my dog and it was warm enough with the full sunshine and no wind so I played Naperbrook. Wind was much stronger and it definitely had some bite. I am glad I got out and played but by 18 I hit my drive and then picked up and went straight to my car as my hands were losing any feeling because they were too cold. Even though I have lived here for 40 years now, growing up in the south my blood must be thinner than you Northern natives LOL.

Maybe I went overboard with "great". However, being a Chicago native, I did not feel cold and thought the wind was fine. Played last Friday at Cinder Ridge and the rain on few of the holes really sucked.

Not trying to escalate for the sake of it, B-Man. And, I have no ill will towards you. My point was that saying there are better options is like telling a guy there are hotter women he could be dating when you see him with his girl. It may be factual, but what's the point in bringing it up? One could see you with your girl and say the same thing. There's always someone hotter, but that's who he chose to be with (on that day, at least).

DB30 now taking a deep breath and letting it go...woosah!

... Not to beat this to death this but you are new on this thread and perhaps you did not know there are many courses that are better in the area so it just seems overly sensitive. But you are a Cubs fan so I guess it is expected. ; ) Fwiw, I would not play Carriage Greens for free but of course you may feel differently. My favorite course in the area is Prairie Bluff but several here do not care for the course at all while many here love Big Run but a few of us hate that course. Nobody took offense at any contrary comments because that is why we are here. To share good and bad opinions about local courses.

:cheesy: True. That being said, I may be a little bit on DeeBee's side. Unless you are at Augusta or PV or the like you can comment "Sorry but there are better options." Not that I really care, but I get what he is saying. Anyway, might try to walk 9 this afternoon, seems decent out.

fall golf is awesome...

but can be COLD, and distance robbing

I just bought some cold weather gear (mitts for my clicgear pushcart) and a wearable handwarmer tube (for putting - if they will still allow me out on the practice greens, hah!)

This is classic. Let me edit my comment and elaborate: "Sorry, but every other golf course within 20 miles, including Fresh Ghettos, is a much better choice." This is not an opinion. I heard it on Fox News.

But in all seriousness, I meant the surrounding area along 55 such as Cog Hill, Ruffled Feathers etc. That's within the local area. Now get back to work! What do you think you all are? Millennials?

Too nice a day to sit inside, so I took the afternoon off and headed down to Harborside. The Port course is closed for fairway and green aeration, so I wound up on the Starboard course. The greens appear to have been aerated a week or so ago, and they were playable, but not great. The bunkers needed grooming, but even wet they're still the best bunkers in the area.

$75 is still too much for a midweek round. Bah. Once again I literally had the course to myself. When I made the turn I saw a group on the 18th, but that was the extent of my contact with humans. 'Just a picture perfect day to be out whacking a ball in a gopher hole.

Still struggling to find a reliable driver swing. I managed 10 fairways, but that's not saying much on the course's generous fairways. With little distance off the tee I only managed 8 greens. Back to back birdies on #4 and #5, and five scrambles helped keep the score reasonable.

@BMan...let's ask the question that every inquiring mind needs answered.

Carriage Greens or Tanna Farms?

I'll take the 1hr drive to Tanna Farms. Where's that hat meme I had?

... Yup, as much as I dislike playing seventeen par 3's in 18 holes I would also make the 1 hr drive and play Tanna over the 10 minute drive to CG every time. Tanna actually has several par 4/5's I really enjoy playing.

I actually found the bunkers at Lost Marsh to be excellent when I last played there a couple of weeks ago. Now, do their bunkers turn to mush after a light shower? Of course. But when dry they're the second best part of the course. The first is obviously the neighboring industry and methane torches.

My 90 lb pup took out my knee about three weeks ago. She was really excited to see me and slid across the hardwood into the side of my leg. Nothing serious, just painful. Luckily, I was able to get out for nine yesterday afternoon for the first time since knee-gate. The ball striking was poor, but the putter and wedges bailed me out for an undeserving 39.

Lol. I had a dream last night that I was on a putting green repairing ball marks. The weird part was not that the ball marks were oozing blood. No, the weird part was that I seemed to run out of them.

Why can't I have a dream where I shoot 62 to win the U.S. Open? I guess dreams have to have some basis to reality.

Who would have fathomed that there would be so much love for Tanna Farms? Next thing you know, VNutz will chime in and say he's secretly always loved the course.

I don't mind Tanna Farms. More of a senitmental thing, my fiance lived in Geneva and we would play there when we first started dating. That being said, sentiment aside give me Tanna Farms over Big Run... (prepares for rath of fellow wrxers)

... We keep bringing up the worst of the worst in comparison to Tanna. If it is a perfect day with no wind and mid 80's temps I might be tempted to play Big Run for free but would not waste $1 to play there. If I could design a golf course it would have 2 stellar pars 3's and 6 par 5's. I was playing almost everyday when I was in LA for pilot season playing between auditions back in the late 90's and bemoaning how par 3's derailed so many of my rounds. I could not understand why I played 4/5's so well and sucked at par 3's. Then I saw a stat for Tiger that was something like on par 5's for his career he was 1,232 UNDER par. But on par 3's he was 39 OVER par. I felt a lot better. But would still avoid the 6 par 3's at Tanna although I appreciate the extra 2 par 5's. The 16th hole at 215 into the wind and a blind tee shot over the reeds is one of the silliest holes I have ever played.

I feel like anytime BR is talked about on here I am the extreme minority in hating that place. Nice to hear someone agrees. Is tanna 6-6-6? I can't remember. Those are pretty rare, one of the Cabot courses is 6-6-6 I believe.

Little bit of different scenery though.

I look at Big Run as something of a novelty course, a once in a while kind of thing. Some of the holes are just silly, but once in a while it's fun to play a course that has ridiculous challenges like that, just for $hits and giggles, assuming you understand that going in. It also has a cool old school feel to it with the abundance of trees, something you don't get that often anymore.

... I have never ben a fan of tricked up courses. I love a classic what you see is what you get course. If it looks hard it is and if it looks easy it is. Risk reward is always nice. Encino, a muni in LA with a drivable 314yd par 4 (with hard fairways) that has plenty of trouble on anything but a great tee shot and a dogleg right 330yd drivable par 4 that you have to carry trees to reach and still takes an almost perfect drive. A tough 428 yd par 4 that requires a draw off the tee or you are left with a 200+ yd second shot. One of my favorite muni courses I did not mind playing 3 or 4 times a week.

The 16th hole at 215 into the wind and a blind tee shot over the reeds is one of the silliest holes I have ever played.

I've never made worse than a birdie on the 16th there.

    • Titleist GT drivers - 2024 the Memorial Tournament
Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
