Having everyone play an entire 72 hole stroke play event over 4 days to compete for three medals just doesn't make sense. In every other Olympic sport conducted over several days there are heats and semifinals so only the leaders advance. There should be a cut after every round. Step up and perform immediately or be eliminated.

For example. cut the field to top 30 and ties after round one. Cut to top 20 and ties after round two. After round three only the top 10 and ties advance to compete for the 3 medals in round 4. In the final round less than a dozen players are going to have a reasonable chance for a medal anyway. Why not give golf the same Olympic flavor we have in the other sports like swimming and the track and field events.

Is the GC coverage a joke? I'm pretty serious here. I just watched 15 minutes, with four commercial breaks - literally every two minutes. I guess I'll check back later.

Use a proxy and go to the BBC site for no adverts what so ever. But be aware the commentators are Very Poor.

Masterly piece of understatement,

I don't know who is on the mic. but maybe they are refugees from 5 Live radio commentary and it just doesn't work on screen. It's awful.

The only reason golf in in the Olympics is to give NBC something they can sell commercials during. Even the format they chose couldn't be any more ordinary-just another 4 round tournament. I've watch none, don't plan to watch any and it sounds like I made a wise decision.

Does Rickie think there is a cut? He posted about the Wyndham Championship next week like he's already ready to fly home?

Wouldn't be golf without Bubba whining about something. Did a mosquito fly near him there?

This guy was there. I wonder what their conversation was about. Lol. Matthew: "Rickie, you got leave the Olympic booty alone. It looks like you're exhausted"

Mcconaughey would be the guy to hang out with at the olympics. Plus his wife is from Brazil.

Who is a better player in your opinion:

Jim Furyk - shot 58, the lowest recorded round in PGA Tour history?

Jack Nicklaus - won 18 professional major championships?

What you are saying is that the best round should define the champion, as opposed to their aggregate performance over the course of the event, subject to the qualifying/cut restrictions you have stipulated. The other events are logistically confined in that they can't have every single participant compete in that event for its duration, golf has that capability so it might as well use it IMO.

I probably missed this earlier, but is it just me or does the USA golf hats look like something you would find in the $5 bin at Walmart on July 5th?

what do ya mean? Those were designed by a French man who is married to an Italian woman and they live in Canada. The material is 100% Chinese cotton picked by Mongolian laborers, processed in a textile mill in Korea were they apply a wool liner from sheep in Australia. They are then loaded onto British Airways and flown to Japan. Once there they are inspected by Mizuno staff repackaged and sent off to Mexico to have USA embroidered on them. Repacked again place on a Peterbuilt truck made in Guatemala driven down to Honduras to board a ship bound for Jamaica were Cuban refugees sprinkle cannabis inside the liner (that's why Rickie's play is so bad) and placed back on another cargo ship registered in Liberia and then off to RIO!

Match play kills your point and no question this should have been a match play event.

Because the Accenture was so awesome (before they tweaked the format)?

Match play also allows the possibility (however remote) that the 18th or even 17th holes may not even factor into the event. Of a course the world has never seen but desperately needs to in order to GROW THE GAME!!!!

I understand what you're saying, but medal play objectively ensures the best player that week will have won. Can't necessarily say the same for match play.

+1 Chris. Worst commentary I have ever heard at any sporting event ... they didn't even know what hole they were watching earlier on ... if this is what the BBC will do to golf after Peter Alliss pops his clogs then it makes me glad that Sky got The Open (and I don't think that is a good thing in the broader scheme of things :) )

Is this because of NAFTA or the TPP thingy?

The problem is the textile mill was in North Korea not South Korea. Big difference. And I believe it explains the entire problem.

Can I ask a silly question....

What happens if multiple players are tied for 2nd or 3rd? do they all get medals?

Ans what happens if there is a tie for first? I'm guessing there's a playoff, but how do the medals get awarded?

I'm confused

This is absolute madness to suggest a cut after every round. You already have guys who didn't want to go. You really think players will get on board for a chance to be one and done? Will never happen.
