Gap Wedge: Match your iron set or specialized wedge?

I think it all depends whether or not you are going to chip with the club. If you will hit shots around the green with 46-50, then you should get a wedge (SM6, MD3, etc), or if you are going to hit a lot full and 3/4 shots with it, I think it should be the same as your iron set

GW from my CB3 Set. Bent 1* weak to 50*. PW is 45*. SwSW is 54* and LW is 58*

I've tried other wedges in 50* and prefer the matching GW for that spot and the shots I hit with consistently, 90-105yrds, long bunker shots and chip and runs.

I think this is a good point. I can't say I've ever chipped with my gap wedge. I pretty much exclusively chip with my 58° and control the height via ball position.

AW from my iron set. go to around the green is 54, 58 used when needed. if i want to let it run out im more likely to use 9-7 iron rather than gap wedge.

I was a 'matching to your set' advocate but then I bought a set of irons that had no gap wedge, so I bought a Nike Vr forged 50*. I now love this club - it feels ace and offers me versatility. By versatility, I mean that when I'm shopping for irons in the future I'm no longer restricted to those sets with a gap wedge!

I went with the matching 51 degree gap wedge in my Z765's because I always hit full to 3/4 shots when I used my old 52 wedge. I now have a 55 and 60 wedge for around the greens which is all I ever used them for.

I always got the matching PW and AW but with my new Apex CF 16's I made the switch. The PW and AW heads on the set were too small and I couldn't muster enough confidence. I bought the 56 and 60 SM6's this summer and really like them so I put a 50 and 46 degree in the bag as well. So i have a 4-9 and 4 Sm6 wedges and love the setup. Lost a few yards on the PW and Gap so I'm stuck when I have 120-125 but I manage as best I can. My 100 and in game has vastly improved. Half swings with each club go exactly 55, 65, 75 and 85...love those distances now.

Used to play Ping UW then 56/60. Have dropped the UW and gone 50/54/58 glides for more consistent full swing, pitch and chip distances for each (less thinking, easier golf for me).

I like the specialty 52, for me im using it for chipping piticng, high spinners and lower knock downs. I like the sharpers groove that typically come on the aftermarket wedges.

I'm still undecided. JPX EZ forged gap wedge looks like a shovel with the thick top line and extra loft compared to other clubs in the set. It definitely shoots straight though, so it may only be a visual change for me.

One of the things James said was that he does the bulk of his chipping with his 60*.

 

Man, how the times have changed. I remember taking a little class with an LPGA pro back when I was probably 8-9 years old. She told us to chip with our 7-irons. Bump and run everything to the hole.

I'm just in the middle. Use my PW around the green. Throw it about 1/2 way to the hole and let it run the rest of the way.

I have a set of AP2s that have the gap wedge and O have a set pf Zevo Blades that I use a Ping 50*. I like the Ping wedge a lot, but have not tried it with my AP2s at this point.

I practice with my set's gap wedge from about 50 to 35 in. Go to my Vokey 54 F from there and use my 60 PM or 54 Vokey for chips 25 and in depending on the lie, green and pin placement.

The wedge head matches my wedges but the shaft matches the rest of my set. I found the GW that came with the set to be to clunky for the 3/4 shots and bump and runs I wanted out of it. But I use the same shaft as my set bc the majority of shots with it are full shots.

I play SGI irons so the matching gap wedge became a bit one dimensional for me. Now that I've switched to a specialty wedge, I can use it more for chipping and shorter shots.

My gap wedge does not match my irons. I went with it because of added versatility due to the grind.

This. My gap is a 50* and my wedge set is 50/54/58. I like to use the 50* for longer bunker shots and have found that the gap wedges included or made available as part of a set just aren't very suitable for this purpose. At least for me anyway.
