After a poor experience with another new set of clubs that I got rid of, I went to a place and tried out many different irons after getting educated. My existing 20 year old irons hit 7 iron about 160 on the course and I brought that in to test. The numbers came out the same. I tried a bunch of clubs, including some high end forged ones that really killed mis hits and good shots were only marginally more than my existing clubs. Ended up hitting both the titleist AP1 and CF 16 about 10-15 yards further. Settled on the CF 16 and then tried different shafts and got a few more yards with the XP95 S300 according to the sensor.

 

Got the clubs and went to a course I play regularly. The real world results matched the simulator. Seriously 20 yards further with the same club number. Its not just the loft. A 9 iron launches like a 9 iron, just with a lot more ball speed. These things were rocket launchers. A golf cheat code. Its hard to describe the feel and forgiveness. When you miss the center, you can feel it but you don't lose a lot of yardage. When you hit it right, you really know it.

 

Note: Did have issues with pulling shots. Seemed to have that mostly worked out before the end of the round. Likely caused by difference in weights between old clubs and new.

 

Now I just have to figure out what wedges and other clubs I need to maximize the scoring advantage from the distance gains. Looks like a lot of wedges.

Question for those who have played with these Apex CF16 irons: How much further did you hit a PW? Does the extra distance taper down as you go to the shorter irons? Not a fan of hybrid or mixed sets, adds another bit of mental jujitsu to picking a club.

^^^^I'd say maybe 5, 10 yards at most. Today I hit 2 PW's 160 which is 10 yards further than my old PW. I had another PW shoot that went about 156 according to gps. Ever since I had my GW loft strengthened I haven't had any gapping issues.

Anyone playing these with the KBS Tour V 110 stiff flex shafts? Any bad reports on this particular shaft offering?

here are my issues with the clubs. Mostly swing related

 

my long iron swing isn't great and I slightly flip my wrists into impact so my launch is higher than it should be. As a result the gapping in the long irons is tight (10 yards). I'll probably get my lofts adjusted to 4 degrees gap.

 

Gapping on the rest of the set is 15 yards. Not really that big of a deal as I am learning to take 5 and 10 yards off the shot to make up for it.

 

In regards to flipping my wrist at impact I do have a slight problem hitting less than full wedge shots with my PW. It's a swing issue that I need to work on. I did almost hit have a hole in one hitting a 90% PW so it's not that big of a deal.

 

The PW is 10 yards longer than my last PW, as a result I have a 20 yard gap between my GW and PW. I'm not good at hitting my GW full so I have an issue at 130 yards. I might bend the loft forward a degree or two and see how this works so I can hit it a little softer.

 

Overall I'm very happy with these irons, I have a few swing issues with them but my scores have dropped and I'm making more birdies per round. Some on holes where I was just happy to make par on before.

Dont quote me on it - but the 545 were bigger in size compared to the cf16. I was kinda surprised how big the head was on the srixon.

I' have played my 4-PW with Nippon 120x for about 20 rounds now. Traded in 2014 Apex pros. These are definitely longer by a half a club in long irons for me, and more forgiving on mishits. The only problem I have had is distance inconsistency on center strikes. With the apex pros, if I hit a 6 iron out of the middle it went 180 yds. With the CF 16 a center strike 6 iron goes 180 one shot then 195 on another with the same swing. I got frustrated, and like a true wrx'er, bought a combo set of Srixon 745/945 with Nippon Modus 120x. Have played 5 rounds so far. Scores are back down to what I'm used too. Played a quick 9 last night and shot par. With a better putting game coulda been a couple under. CF 16's are for sale. Had my best iron game today with these. Shot an 80 (shoulda been a 79 or 78 but I cannot putt) on a course Ive never played and my playing partner made me play the tips no less. :)

The first full round with my Apex 16 was a 73 at a course that usually eats me alive for mid-80s. I was knocking down pins with my 6-7-8 so I was able to allow myself to throttle down from driver and use the baffler to get in the fairway.

How do these iron perform on hard greens? Are the lower spinning or can you still stop the ball with mid irons? Also, are they easy enough to hit out f the rough? I am looking at new irons and have narrowed it down to 2, the Apex and Mizuno MP 25. Thanks.

I can stop my mid and low irons on hard greens, but I'm a high ball hitter. Usually my 4 and 5 irons are within 10 feet of the pitch mark on the greens.

totally depends on the greens, I have 'sucked back' 3 irons on v soft greens and seen wedges bounce right thru on baked hardpan

This happens on hard sun baked greens. On soft greens, which I don't play often the long iron shots can be with 3 feet or less of the pitch mark. My short irons spin back a lot depending on the shot.

I tested both sets last week at Budget Golf.I hit the CF16's way better which was dissappointing because IMO the 2014's were way more aesthetically pleasing.

At the beginning of this season, I started with a set of the Apex CF16 / Apex Pro combo sets. I found the distance gap between the 7 iron and 8 iron did not flow very well for me. Also, for my ability the forgiveness of the CF16 all the way through the set just suits my game better. The CF16 is hands down the best set I've ever played and I've tried more sets than I would like to admit.

Lie angle designation. Mine are gold. 1 flat.

It indicates the lie angle adjustment of the irons. Black is standard lie angle and mine are white because they are +2 degrees.
