If you don't replace a ball you moved, and then play it...are you deemed disqualified?

 

Not is this case because the rules official on the spot said he did not make it move.

 

It's clear to me that the USGA is going to give DJ a 1 stroke penalty. I can't image what DJ is going through right now. Hope he wins by 2 so this is no longer an issue.

We've spent like 30 minutes now talking about a potential rules violation that may or may not affect the tournament...sucking the life out of this thing.

 

This is true. This tournament has turned to crap. Confusion abounds. And ANYBODY would be totally upset if they were in DJs shoes.

I agree with all. But now no matter what they rule in the end, someone won't be happy. DJ will need to win handily for this to be a non factor.

Rules guys have spoilt this great tournament. An instant fair correct decision was required leaving zero ambiguity straight away. We did not get it. Sad for DJ. He needs to dig deep and play hard. Come on son.

I guess a more fair way to handle it would be to look at it and decide if it's a penalty or not in your opinion. If not, play on. If so, assess a provisional 1 shot penalty and notify DJ. Then look at it together after the round when he can make his case.

How is it possible that a ball at rest can move backwards when DJ is holding his putter behind the ball. Unless he is some sort of magician, it seems impossible. He was lined up behind the ball. He would have to have his putter in front of the ball for it to move backwards by something he caused. USGA is sketchy.

Can DJ recover? Didn't the USGA setup those greens so if one merely walks around the ball it could move? If an ant sneezed, the ball would move. That's it. DJ, blame it on an ant or other insect ... what can the USGA say?

Actually, it has already affected the tournament. There is no way this is not screwing with DJ's mind.

The USGA goes out to ask him if he caused the ball to move, he says no. Yet they plan on giving him a penalty anyways. So they're insinuating DJ is a liar. USGA are a bunch of asshats!

 

This is the really disturbing part along with them asking what could have made it move if he didnt. That's not his responsibility to explain. Simply terrible.

USGA is blowing this big time. Course they have a pattern of doing this with many of their ridiculous rulings in the past few years, starting with the groove rule. This is just one more reason I am glad I did not renew my membership.

This is absurd, the usga has managed to make the National championship about them rather than the competitors, and golf. Good job!
