Just how tall are these guys again?

Yes, I'm a year older than Adam and from the mid-late 90's when we played a lot of junior/inter club golf to the early 2000's when he first appeared on tour there was a noticeable difference. I'm only guessing (I only speak to Adam in passing a couple of times a year, at most, at the big Aussie tournaments) but the timing would be right for the Tiger/Harmon influence. Funnily enough he wasn't even the best junior in Brisbane at the time (a city of less than 2 million people), Travis Johns, who now resides in the US was something else. http://www.jiromyher...hns-golf-swing/

I guess I'm wrong about Rory then. He just seemed bigger than I thought I've heard him. Maybe it was the ground he was on or something. He walked right past me and I thought - hm, not THAT small. Not like Rickie.

Also - didn't Adam say in an interview at one point that he basically tried to emulate the 2001 Tiger swing?

That may have been rumor.

  • 2 weeks later...

I saw all these dudes at bethpage a while back.

Tiger is not that tall and really not that jacked. He just looked like a normal guy in decent shape.

VJ was a monster, tall and solid.

Phil not as tall. Over 6' but not much.

Followed Garcia, Villegas and Scott because their gallery was spectacular. Garcia and Villegas were tiny and looked like Scott's little brothers.

Justin rose is surprisingly tall, at least 6'3". Jason Day is pretty jacked as well, arms are huge compared to what I thought.

Vijay I dunno

Tiger I stood next to, I'd say around 6' & 1/2"

People I know who've stood next to Nicklaus tell me he's shrunk to about 5'6" tops

Ok, it's apparent that the players have no idea how tall they actually are, and neither do we...outside of about a 6 inch margin of error ?!

First time I saw Davis Love he looked like a number 2 pencil . His shoulders looked like they were a foot apart.

Swore Willie Woods was wearing guranimals slacks. That was 1991 or 92 at the Western Open.

These guys all liked that Woosie won the Masters.

ian-woosnam2-large_trans++qVzuuqpFlyLIwiB6NTmJwfSVWeZ_vEN7c6bHu2jJnT8.jpg

I saw Woosie at Heathrow when he was in his playing prime. I can tell you, he had other body measurements to make up for his short statue. Guy was built like a block of granite. Like Emanuele Canonica who was as short as Woosie but won the statistics on the european tour several times for driving average.

Most impressive character in this area must be Robert Karlsson, once winner of the European Tour money list and member of the RC team for Europe. Saw him first time at Nordea Masters in Stockholm this year, and the guy was HUGE. Not in the way some long guy do, kind of abnormal, and not like the 300 pound mountain of a man, but well built and frankly handsome, still handsome at the same age as Phil,. He used to work as a model during his younger days. The Dolph och Golph. Think he's 6''5'

Ive also stood next to Rory.

He's about 5' 9 & 1/2".

TW looks about 3" taller here at the shoulder line. It's a better measure than a course as they're next to each other on a flag surface.

Just like I thought around 6' & 1/2"

Rory, for one, walked by me a few times and he seems taller than his listed height. Because he walks upright and stands up straight.

He is tall if you live in the Shires.

Lol. I never said he is tall. I said he seems taller than his listed height.

Interesting because I thought he was a midget the first time I saw him at Murifiekd three years ago. I would bet Rory is lucky to be 5'8" in his spikes legit.

Of course it would be beneficial for me if Rory really was 5'10", that would put my Johnson closer to 10".

I thought the same thing. I stood within 3 feet of him last year at East Lake, and I'm a legit 5 ft 9in. I easily looked down on him. My friend with me commented on how small he was before I even said anything. He is remarkably tiny compared to his appearance on TV. He is LITTLE.

These guys for the most part are as tall as reported. What I think happens is that fans have inflated images of their heros and when they see them in person and they dont meet those lofty expectations, they actually end up over reacting and end up thinking theyre smaller than they really are

"Reason"? This is trivia, my friend. The bread and butter for any fruitful discussion.

By the way, If Robert Karlsson is the most impressive guy, Fitzpatrick must be the runt of the tours. Saw him too at the Nordea event too. he won the thing. But he's a small fellow, and kind of falls into that role going around staring at the ground, bent forward. Not what you expect from a banker's son. You cannot understand how he manages to propell the balls to the distances he does.

Tiger is probably just a smidge over 6', but very small framed, Nicklaus nearly 5'11 in his prime though well under 5'10 at this point with age. Vijay is legit around 6'3.

Erie is a big dude, tall and big frame. So is Phil.

Nick Faldo was the biggest surprise when I first saw him in person. He's a really big guy, about 6'3, but like Els, big frame and projects larger for his height.

Ahhhh, no.

Phil was tiny in person.

Coming from a short guy, I don't really care or doubt it. Most guys out there are very tall. Almost all of them (well, I suppose I'd say that given my height; many of you may be average or taller than some and have a different reference point from which some of the subtle height differentials is more germane).

Now, we all watched and loved the Rio Olympics: Some sports have a body type; shape and size. Almost carbon copies. Some do not. Now, it is nice that golf is one of those sports where Tim Clarke, who could be a bagger at your local grocery store or perhaps a desk jockey at an insurance company, can beat a guy who is 6'5".

Having said that, go to a PGA Tour event and just look at the average player. They are tall, and usually on the skinny side. The "golfing body" is: Dustin Johnson, Geoff Ogilvy, Smylie, etc. There are also some other body types that work too.

I guess what I'm saying is, believe the stats. The distance advantage is real (that is directly related to height). Last summer I played a course from the Lady's Tees. What I shot that day is obscenely low.

And now onto perhaps the only player I can lay out a height-brag about: David Lingmerth is listed as 5'7". I was two feet away from him at Firestone. He is shorter than that. I'll leave it at that. But no hard feelings. The dude is awesome, hits it a decent distance for his size, and obviously can win on the big tour.

Judging from being inside the ropes at the President's Cup at Muirfield Village a few years ago just a few observations...

I'm 6'4" and hover around 230-240. I'm also a competitive olympic style weightlifter. Having said that, Ernie Els is a very big man. Same height as I am and just as thick as I was at the time. Angel Cabrera is a legit 6', and built like a tank. Adam Scott, 6' pretty thin. Phil Mickelson is at least 6'2". Spieth, is not 6'2". Tiger is barely 6', probably closer to 5'10", and not impressive physically. The one thing that really stood out to me is how much power Angel Cabrera has. It's just stupid.

Old Clubs Only, and there are too many to list.

Cabrera has a thick powerful build plus a gut, which makes the claimed 210lbs on his PGA profile a bit of a chuckle.

Finau looks big on the course and tiny next to Andrew Luck. Its laughable to read the claims that these guys are as big as NFL players

DJvHB4hl.png

Luck is 6'4. They list Finau at the same height, but he's clearly closer to 6'1. That puts JB Holmes about 5'8 if he's lucky. He's clearly not 5'11 and only 5 inches shorter than Luck.
