DST Compressor

I have one and it's the same as everyone so far has said. It really helps you get your hands ahead of the ball and hit with a descending blow but ANY flipping of the hands, over-the-top move or out to in will result in some horrendous shanks, thins and any other bad word you can think of. The only issue I have with it is that if I set up immediately with it in the impact position, my grip ends up too strong and my good shots go way left. I set up with it like I was swinging my irons first then put them in the impact position. This lets me get the club set up correctly and get a nice tight draw with it. Again, it's not hard to go from the DST to your clubs. My biggest issue was the grip size. I use 4 wraps of tape on my irons so the grip felt really small. Once I regripped it, it was much better.

That is a great point about the grips. I have read the grips are horrible anyway, but the first thing in doing is regripping.

I use a midsize grip with 3 extra wraps. I want to mimic that as best as I can

I tried using the stock grip but it was garbage and didn't fit my hand at all.

I have had this for awhile, but just started using it again. It does seem to help me with a more descending blow with my irons, as I am typically a sweeper. My divots are typically wildly inconsistent; sometimes no divot, sometimes a very deep divot, and then sometimes a nice divot. Here is what I did on the range today, alternating between the DST compressor and my 8 iron. Much more uniform divots (the bottom 3 uniform rows of divots are me).

I really hope you're kidding about your divot pattern....I would be pissed if that was my range, and you left all those gaps in between your divots....

Looks like I anticipated you.

I don't think that means what you think it means

Actually it means exactly what it says. I have spoken with the course superintendent and the head pro about this, and this is what they want. I am not an expert in grass growth, but apparently it has a faster recovery with grass regrowth when the divots are separated. Didn't mean to derail this conversation, but the course superintendent wants it this way, so I plan to listen to him. Let's get back on topic.

I want to find a lefty one to try, you guys have me convinced it will help my iron game.

Did most of you start with half swings and work into full swings wth it? Or dive in head first with full swings?

You do not want to start with full swings. A perfect recipe for laterals, hosels whatever you wanna call them.

I use it for a few months now and do not start with a full swing. Try a chipping motion without wrist c0ck and go up to a 9-to-3-swing. And if you're a flipper like me, prepare for a revelation. But to be perfectly honest, combining the DST compressor with a drill from Andrew Rice gave me the impact we are all looking for. Without the DST club I just couldn't get my hands in front of the ball. And as mentioned before, when you start using it, the address position feels unreal. But you'll get used to it. I actually like my left forearm in line with the shaft at address.

I'm really trying not to buy one of these and this post isn't helpful! I think I flip as well! Not 100% sure, and sometimes I really strike the ball well, but sometimes I don't! I think it's me trying to get the timing right at impact! This tool looks like it would show the error of my ways!

I'm just about to pull the trigger, I'm just a little worried.

I can hit the tour striker semi consistently, but I really feel it does more harm than good to my swing.

the extreme angle of shaft lean needed for the tour striker to work right, it's like the most un- natural feeling in the world to get your hands that far forward.

I find that I start lunging at the ball and coming over the top sometines, and it gets me all screwed up.

Hoping the DST doesn't cause the same thing

I don't own a DST but I think that you can get away with a good shot with the tour striker but not with the DST. You can't cheat with the DST as it won't let you if you want to make a good shot.

I was looking at getting one of these for awhile now and after following this thread for a bit and just having a very off day at the course I've decided to pick one of these up.

I just can't decide between the 8 iron or the wedge. Does anyone have any sort of opinion on which would be better? I'm leaning more towards the 8 iron at the moment.

That's because your hands are not in front enough and/or your grip is to strong. Try gripping the DST like prescribed and get the handle back a few inches yet in front of the ball you'll see how the clubface closes. So at impact you have to really try and pull the handle in and up like in that Andrew Rice video I linked. Oh, and try to swing a little bit to the inside. You're probably used to swing more to the right to compensate for a positive AoA we flippers likely have. Remember, during the downward movement of the clubhead it's moving out and the CF is square or close to target, you'll draw/hook it everytime. To get a straight shot you'll have to manipulate face/path, so for an AoA of -5* you'd have to have a path that is -5* i.e. out to in.

I've never had any problems with my wedges. IMHO they're not played with a lot of compression but with finesse. So I went straight to the 8I.

The only thing I miss since having the DST is that gorious feeling you get when you compress the ball once in a while and it feels like a hot knife through butter. After using the DST that feeling kind of gets lost b/c you're compressing the ball almost every time. Not so glorious anymore

As I said before on other posts about the DST compressor, it is NOT the magic bullet and if not used with proper swing feedback (Skypro or similar, full launch monitor, video) can cause more harm than good.

We are clever problem solvers and given a club like the DST compressor we will find a way to make it work, unfortuneyly there is no guarantee the solution we find will be the RIGHT ONE. I developed an over the top move using the DST compressor, which has persisted all season.

The shallow 1/2 swing drill mentioned in this thread is a really good place to start, while always monitoring the downswing plane to ensure the action doesn't get over the top. I might give this a try for a short while this winter but if it doesn't produce results the DST compressor will get thrown into the pile of other pretty useless practice aids.

For those thinking of buying, don't forget there is only one shaft and no lie options. IMO it feels pretty harsh in use so is a little hard on the body and joints.

DaveMac, your experience with the Compressor mirrors my initial experience with the Tour Striker.

If I am going to use the TS for an extended session, I pull out my PVC approach aid to discourage OTT.

You might look at changing the grip to your normal gamer. The stock grip was too small for me and I replaced it with a midsize grip that I normally use and it made a difference with less hooks. But the club itself 'promotes' hooks on over the top swings (which I possess unfortunately) so you have to work at swinging on plane to eliminate the hooks. Just a few thoughts.

I currently have a Tour Striker, and really like using it. I find it very helpful when my swing is going haywire. The only thing I don't like is that it's not very helpful off of grass. I don't like carrying my lie board to hit off of every time I go to the range. It's great to have when the range is mats only. The fact that this can be used off of the grass is probably why I'm going to order one soon.

That was my problem with it. It sits in my garage now. It worked for the winter months when off mats but once grass season is here, it became too easy to cheat.

So far, still in honeymoon phase with DST but liking it so far.

That's good to hear. I still take my Tour Striker with me to the course when I practice or play, just in case I'm hitting off of mats. It gives me great feedback. I have the 7x model, and I have to be precise with that club. When I'm playing well, and a lot, I don't have to many issues with it. Just can't use it off the grass. I plan on using both the DST and the Tour Striker anytime I play, depending if it's off of mats or grass.

My CR-10 came in yesterday, and tomorrow will hopefully be my first chance to give it a try. It's going to depend on the weather here in Houston, and what time I get done with meetings at work.
