Average 150 Club?

Recommended Posts

Between a 9 and an 8 depending on weather, temperature and so on. Most likely 9 iron off tee and 8 iron from a standard lie on FW or semi rough. I dont count on any roll out from theese distances so basically carry distance or 1 yard roll out tops. Have 11,1 handicap right now but on my way down. Played for about 18 months total.

  • 2 weeks later...

Over 50 years ago, when I was a young teen, on one 150 yd. par 3 I sometimes used a homemade club that I made out of an old broken golf umbrella. The wooden umbrella shaft was attached to an old broken 5 wood head, the "shaft" butt end even had the pine cone shaped wooden handle in place. The homemade club was just right for that par 3 hole that was near my home.

Today I usually use a conventional steel shafted Mizuno MP-60 35* 7 iron for around 150 yds. If I were using my Wilson FG-17s, I'd use a 34* 6 iron. I used to have a set of Taylormade Rocketbladez that for 150 I'd use a 35* 8 iron. Can get confusing using different sets of irons!

If you did that, everyone would answer 6 iron or something like that?

I still carry my 9i Ping i10 150, and I’m pretty sure there are longer hitters on this site who could put a PW or GW past that. I know many other golfers who can easily hit that far.

LOL are you aware that this is a SUB forum called Average Joe swings stiff and below? to hit a GW 150 yards you likely need a GW of nearly 100mph right? Where this sub form is likely focused for those with driver swing speeds of 100mph or less.... to say people have GW swings of 100mph is a little funny......I get the humor of the 74* LW.....

Its not a matter of IF people or WHO can. Its more to those that hit 150 yards with a swing speed near or closer to 75mph and a ball speed 105-110mph......

Its so funny...you hit your 9iron 150 yards...thats like going to grade school and telling kids I can run faster than you or bench press 200lbs more than you LOL!

*edit*

yes I probably would like to see more 6iron's why? Well Im sure that many of the Average Joe's here are trying to quantify and edify their distances....not to come in and read someone hitting their PW and GW 150 yards......

All I can say is the answers will be very uninteresting when everyone answers 6i. So, why even ask?

It's far more common to hit a 9i 150 yards than you seem to think, it's not even close to saying "I press 200 pounds MORE than you."

And Oops, I didn't know it was for the average Joe. Sorry. . .

Well to be honest I dont see, Just 6i irons though... We see 5 hybrids, 7 woods, 6,7,8 irons... this would then illicit questions like "Oh" you have a swing speed of 75mph but you can hit your 7 iron 150 when I have the same but use a 5 hybrid? this would then evolve to lofts and techniques and expectations.

Again many of the "Average" Joe players are actually very smart and play within their abilities. I know because I play with them on consistent basis. Secondly its far more Common for a person to hit a 9 iron 150 yards?

do you have factual proof of that? I have seen LOTS of numbers posted about PGA, LPGA swings..... to be able to hit a quality shot and replicate it? I highly doubt that as a NORM of "Average Joe, Stiff and below players"

Now if you say it can happen in general sure, I can skull a LW hell a putter if I catch it just right 150 yards, but that is not a realistic shot... this is NOT a one time shot. it said, Average 150 club.

Anyway dont want to seem to soap box this ..... but I come often to check on this thread out of curiosity for average joe. I am Average Joe, in relations to my age and athleticism. But again I play with 60 year olds weekly, Im half their age and the shoot 3-10 strokes better than I do, and they do use 5 irons, 6hybrids from 150 yards out........ I also play with hundreds of other average player only one person of NON tour caliber hits a PW 150..... only 1......

Lastly yes... that is why I suggest the title change... to Average Joe 150 club....

Far more common than you think doesn’t exactly translate to far more common in general.

Certainly far more common than someone benching 350+ for sure.

I agree with the change in title now, I certainly don’t want to throw in the red herring in this thread.

Again, oops, signing out of this thread.

7 iron for me, maybe an 8 in mid summer, but I learned the other day it's really hard to compare distances across sets.

I play a standard set of MX-25. My buddy has a standard set of Wilson Ci7. He always hit his irons much further than me, so we both just assumed he was swinging harder. Last week on a slightly downhill 180 yard par 3 I hit my 5 iron pin high, slightly right of the green. My buddy pulled his 7 iron, and just for fun I took a swing with that. Pin high, four feet from the cup. His 7 iron goes the same distance with my swing as my 5 iron (both shots checked up within a foot of where they landed). When I got home I did a little digging. Turns out his irons are 3/4" longer, and 1-2 degrees stronger across the set. Being cast vs my forged set, they also feel like the ball comes off the face a little hotter.

im a pretty average joe and i hit 150 between my 8/9i depending on the season. It's probably more interesting to see what set people are hitting their 150 club with.

Average Joes aren't 3 handicappers... not even close.

Not sure what you mean? Do you mean brand and model of the club?

I'm an "average joe" at about a 10-ish handicap and carry my 9i Ping i10 about 145 yards throughout the year. Mid-summer is longer and winter is shorter.

In most cases, I don't like thinking of myself as an average Joe, but on the golf course I am happy to be in sight of that level. I've been much worse.

My swing speed/distance seems to match up fairly well with the chart posted earlier. Obviously there are a lot of factors to consider, but I will hit 7 iron if the pin is 150 away, especially from a tee. If I need to carry 150, it's a 6 iron.

I have learned to club up on approach shots if there is any doubt. The number of times I flush it and go 10 yards long is smaller than the number of times I hit it out on the toe and come up 10 yards short.

Ping G irons, standard loft (30.5 degree 7 iron), 1 inch long

This is my first post on Golf WRX. I just realized that the photo I use (which I also used on other golf sites) is from a hole-in-one last year where the pin was set about 150 out. I hit 6 iron, but those were my old irons, which were one club weaker loft.
