I can't imagine pw at 150yds...I use my 34.5* 8i.

Three years ago (60 years old then) when I was living in Longmont, CO I was hitting PW to 150yds easily. But we were at 5600'. ;)

As many have said it depends on the situation somewhat. With no wind dead flat it is a 7 iron for me at the moment with Callayway Apex Pro 7i with stock loft and length. My SS is about 98 mph with the driver. I have lost some SS recently due to illness prior I was playing TM R7 TPs and I hit a comfortable 8 150 and my SS was about 104-105 with the driver. I have also gone to about a 10g lighter shaft in the new irons but still in stiff flex.

Amp Cell Pro (46*) - full PW is 148 carry

MP-4, 1* strong (41*) - baby 9. PW is 145 carry

Wow have I lost distance in the pursuit of proximity to the hole! I am about a club shorter than when I posted this even though I can swing the same speeds. I would now choose a punch 8, unless I really need to elevate it and launch a 9.

God's honest truth, that's a soft 5-iron for me. Adams CB2, KBS Tour 90 Stiff. 7-iron goes 135.

checking in a year later, and after some lessons in Melbourne with Martin Ridgeway, my 7-iron from the same CB2 set goes 150-155 yards.

also dropped my cap from around 18 to 13.7 right now.

When I was gaming the F7 irons (R-flex) 150 was a well struck 8 (35*) or take some off a 7 (30*)

The King Forged Pro (Stiff) are weaker lofts, still figuring out distance, but seems like 150 will be a well struck 7 (34*) or take some off a 6 (30*)

Assuming the original question related to carry, not overall distance, I would probably go with a 6 iron. It would depend on where the trouble lay. If there is water or a bunker in front and I want to be sure to clear it I might go to a 5 or even an easy 4 iron. Out of light rough I'd use a knock-down 5-wood. My 9 iron gets plenty of use around the greens so I don't see any point in trying to force a shot with too little club. If I'm carrying a full set I may as well use 'em.

All my 6 irons come in around 35 degrees, give or take a degree. The most modern set of irons I use is nearly 30 years old.

Used to be a 40º 7-iron in younger days.

Now it's a 36º 7-iron (1997 model).

What are the NEW 7-irons---34º? Stronger?

Titleist PT___13, 17, 20, 23º fwy wds (stock Titleist MG-307 graphite)
Mizuno Fli Hi___18º driving iron (Aldila NV Pro 105)
Titleist DCI 962___#s 5-9 (Aldila NV Pro 105)
Cleveland 588___49, 53º wedges (Aldila NV Pro 105).
Cleveland 691___58º wedge (Aldila NV Pro 105)
something from my bag of putters--they all suck.

First post here, new member! I was just golfing over the weekend and the guys I was playing with were surprised at my club choice on my approach shots. I was using a 7 iron for 150, but am gradually moving to my 8 iron as my ball striking gets more consistent. I'm hitting the back of the green too often and having to lag putt crazy far. I'm not a great lag putter.

Anyway I feel like that is probably a pretty normal club choice @150 out for someone like me (around 30 5'10" and fairly athletic, but not the best golfer so not trying to murder the ball). But these guys kept saying my swing looks slow and easy and I'm not sure if that's because I have a pretty slow backswing or if my clubhead speed is really slow for my demographic?

Last relevant piece of info is that I shoot in the high 80s on a good day, am a terrible putter so I three putt pretty often, and am currently playing Adams Golf Tight Lies (cavity back game improvement irons) hand me downs from a buddy who gave them to me when I picked up golfing for the first time a couple years back. I'll get some better clubs when I get a more consistent ball strike. Looking forward to that day.

Thanks!

Watch this guy. He doesn't look like he can hit his driver farther than about 220, but he can bomb. His swing probably looks slower than yours. The reality is that it isn't.
